Rose is not listed in the top 10 women's names in the US and in Europe in earlier years, it was not so common. It is an old-fashioned name and was likely more popular in early decades 1900-1930?

The court papers could have been written as part of the petition response to have the case dismissed and it is possible that an atty wrote the response for the judge to sign using common language but in fact she was not there but still it makes you wonder and seems strange . Why did someone bother to have the case dismissed in 1974 if she had already gone missing. Why did no one try and find her or report her missing. Surely they didn't assume she was still in Synanon. And she doesn't show up in the POP sheet that was available from several years later. There are numerous Cole's listed in Flint MI and in Nebraska.

I don't remember SF the way Goody does... however I was a bit older (late 20's) and I didn't go out there until '75. To me it seemed more like a time of anger... the SLA bombings, Patti Hearst finally released, etc. I worked for a law firm in SF, so I guess I had to lead a pretty restrained life. Mostly I remember being very shocked at how outwardly gay people were there. I hadn't been exposed to that before, and I was pretty surprised. I got used to it finally and pretty soon the gays were more open in all parts of the U.S. I do remember some drugs, but I didn't do drugs so it wasn't something I saw too much. What's really hard to realize is that it was 30+ years ago. That shocks me! I have no idea what I did with the intervening years!

Julie, I don't recall Rose having any connections to Nebraska. She was born and raised in Flint, MI, and then sent to California (Synanon). Those are the only two states she's associated with (to my knowledge).

I recall finding another Rose Lena Cole in the genealogy files... and I believe that person was also in Michigan... so it's possible that she was named after a relative. I agree... it's not a real popular name. I associate it more with older people (Rose Kennedy, etc.), but it seems to be coming back into popularity.

None has ever been found. We're hoping that if there is one, it will show up in her juvenile records (if they're ever opened). There is nothing in the papers that Isabela has that shows a Soc. Sec. number.

I wonder if there is a way to check prison records in California to see if she was ever put in prison for drug charges or anything.

I am talking via IM to her nephew (Brian cole) who lived in the same house in flint MI with her right now. . He says: 1991 is when we moved we had the same phone number the whole time, my dad said his dad wasn't a good person. He said: when my grandmother moved to alabama my dad took over the house. his step dad used to beat him my grandmother and all the kids. She trusted Brian's grandmother. He said his grandmother is Opal her step mother. His dad is Billy Cole. He thinks her dad was trying to cover some thing up and said he just learned about this whole thing a couple of weeks ago. But he does not want to hurt his family in anyway....

I bet you are talking to Billy's son that was "the baby" that Rose talked about in her letter. Tell him we all appreciate the information he's supplied. For people who don't remember all of the details, Opal was Jesse's (the father of Rose) second wife and she had 3 children of her own (who I understand Jesse adopted). Billy and Brenda are the only names I recall right now. Jesse had 3 children also... Pose, Jesse and Rose. Opal and Jesse eventually got a divorce (1979?).

Thanks so much for the info on when they moved out of the house. I guess that takes care of any ideas we had that there was no way she could reach anyone. Heck, in 1991, she would have been 35 years old.

there is an online prison locator service. http://www.corr.ca.gov/ReportsResear...e_Locator.html

In some states, you can look up records of former inmates (like AZ) but not sure of privacy laws there in CA for that sort of thing.
also this; To locate an inmate within the California Department of Corrections, please call (916) 445-6713, which is available 24 hours a day. You must have either the inmate's CDC number, or the inmate's full name and date of birth to receive information. The Inmate Locator/ID Warrants will provide an inmate's location, mailing addresses and relevant phone numbers. The Inmate Locator/ID Warrants will not provide any future release date information. Please note that for new or transferring inmates it can take up to seven business days to update location information.

Yes, his name is billy Cole and he said thats what he wanted to clear up regarding timing of when they left the house and such so no chance that she simply couldn't reach them if she had wanted to......

More on what happened when probated people ran away

A woman who lived there ran away from Detroit (not probated), and finally ended up hitching out to California, and synanon, I had some legal problems that I had left behind in Detroit. After boot camp graduation, i wrote to my grandmother, and the authorities in Detroit came looking for me. Synanon sent me back to court in Detroit, with an escort...and i was put on probation...for six months. But she stayed for 5 more years..........

I am a former member as you know and I have reposted all the picture information. the scanned letters are there and I also posted a pic of her as a child from the ancestry site hoping that someone will remember something. Synanon itself shut down in 1991 and by then there were only a few hundred people there. When I was there, perhaps 10,000 people came through during the timeframe with about 2500 people there across 5 facilities at our largest year ( I think 72-73 would be our biggest growth year). I was young then but wanted to note that I have reposted there also under a section we call ISO (in search of) to the main website hoping someone will remember. Many people left and ran away but it wasn't like people were being killed and hidden in the back 40 or anything like that. the wierdest **** happened in the 75-79 timeframe.......

So she was a bit of a reverse Synanon case... she ran away TO Synanon... and the Michigan Court system came after her? I guess that's just the opposite of Rose's case... she was sent to Syananon but then ran away from them. Seems like Michigan Courts were pretty rough on these young kids at the time, though.

Link to Nebraska; what was the father trying to hide?

I brought upNebraska because I am reading the entire thread starting with #1 and find that post #4 says: A quick check of some of my resources shows a Rose Leanna Cole who graduated from a high school in NE in June of '73, at which time the Rose in question would have been almost 17. Since the Rose Leanna Cole in Nebraska graduated in 1973, I'm guessing she' since married and changed her name. I tried to find the same info Shadowangel did, but can't. Some states have great marriage records online, but Nebraska doesn't seem to be one of them

Rose's father was the one who had all of this information. When he died, the rest of the family finally had a chance to look through it. But, to answer your question, there were no envelopes with the letters after she left Synanon. Opal, her stepmother finally found it when he moved out. the timing of how they finally decided to report her missing is odd....
Did someone believe she had stayed at Synanon all that time. Or were liies told by the father about her whereabouts....and then she was forgotten?

Thanks so much, Julie, for doing that. Every exposure her story gets brings us that much closer to finding out what happened to her. I also really appreciate you reporting back to us whatever you hear re Rose. I hope you'll also let your friends there know how much we appreciate their support and their memories. It's very hard to re-create something that happened over 30 years ago, and even more difficult when most of the family members who would remember anything are now deceased. Their memories of Rose at Synanon help substantiate what little we know from her letters.

yes exactly, the opposite where she used the basis that she was in syn to go back escorted to court. syn had a very active conduit link to Detroit and many people were coming from there . We also had a Synanon Detroit facility at the time btw.

I had forgotten about that! That was another Rose Cole. Our's was Rose Lena Cole, but at the time we thought it was Rose Leana Cole. The name confusion was cleared up when someone (Opal?) found Rose's birth certificate. To the best of our knowledge, the Rose Cole in Nebraska was not our's.

SLA bombings and Patty Hearst being released was post 1976 because I was already out of Synanon and lived in Los Angeles. Remember someone driving me along Hwy downtown LA and seeing the fires. We are talking a few years before that but same environment certainly. We saw much of the destruction due to drugs because of who was coming into Synanon during this timeframe. Yes, 30+ years ago.......trying to put ourselves in her shoes at that time and in her space.....what would she do next and why?

I"m betting Patty Hearst was released in late 1975 (maybe October?) and that your memory on that is foggy. I only lived out there from June of '75 until March of '76, so the window in which it could have happened is pretty short for me.

Millionaire heiress Patty Hearst, after having been kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army in February 1974, helped rob a bank with the group two months later. She was arrested in September 1975, and her unsuccessful legal defense was that she suffered from Stockholm Syndrome and was coerced into aiding the SLA.
Maybe released wasn't the best choice of words... I meant that she finally got away from her kidnappers... but it was via arrest.

The bombings and fire of another SLA holdout occured later in 1976 as I was not in the LA area till after the middle of Jan 1976. But you are correct: On April 15, 1974, she was photographed wielding an assault rifle while robbing the Sunset District branch of the Hibernia Bank in San Francisco. Later communications from her were issued under the pseudonym Tania (from the nickname of Haydée Tamara Bunke Bider) and revealed that she was committed to the goals of the SLA. A warrant was issued for her arrest and in September 1975, she was arrested in an apartment with other SLA members.

Mugshot

In her trial, which started on January 15, 1976, Hearst claimed she had been locked blindfolded in a closet and physically and sexually abused, which caused her to join the SLA. Her defense was largely based around the claim that her actions could be attributed to being brainwashed. Others see it as a severe case of the "Stockholm syndrome," in which captives become sympathetic with their captors. Hearst further argued she was coerced or intimidated into her part in the bank robbery.

Julie, do you know if the parents of kids probated to Syn were required to turn over guardianship to Syn or the courts?

It seems that someone would had to have appeared in court or at the very least, contacted the court requesting to have Rose's sentence/probation ended. I would think that before the court released Rose from custody they would have requested a progress report from Syn. Per procedure, Syn should've reported her when she ran away. If she didn't return to serve out her term, it doesn't seem that the court would've willingly granted the request to close her case. By what we have determined, she hadn't even served a year of her term before she ran.

She was still a minor so it isn't like they closed the matter because she was no longer a juvenile.

If the father had a copy of the paper work from court and he was her legal guardian, it seems he would have been the one appearing in court with/for her. For his own brother to say he wasn't a good person gives me the eery feeling that Rose returned to MI, but her father did something to her before she could make it home.

OFF TOPIC:
FYI: Someone gained access to my account that I used to review birth registries for several states. They were reviewing in excess of 500 records PER DAY. I assume it was passed around amongst several people. Nobody needs to look up 500 records.

My account was permanently closed for abuse so I have no means to search at this time. I'm going to be off work for 6 wks w/out pay due to an upcoming surgery on 4/21 so I won't be spending $ on my "entertainment" for a while. I'll let ya know when I do get another account so I can feel productive again (LOL). Til then I'll rely on Googling and cross my fingers.
