JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A Jacksonville caregiver and her boyfriend were arrested Wednesday afternoon after police said the couple held a terminally ill woman hostage in her home.
According to investigators, Melissa Simpson was hired about two months ago to take care of Brenda Broadhurst.
When Broadhurst spoke with Channel 4 Thursday afternoon her arms were scratched and bruised -- evidence of what she said was the abuse she endured during the last two months.
They slapped the tar out of me and spit in my face," Broadhurst said.
Terminally ill and recently out of a hospice, Broadhurst hired Simpson as her live-in caretaker. She said the woman she hired brought along her boyfriend, Shawn Baxley, and instead of helping, Broadhurst said they hurt her.
"They were supposed to help bathe me, help dress me, make sure I took my meds and keep the house clean," Broadhurst said.
