LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- A magnitude-5.8 earthquake has struck just east of Los Angeles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake's epicenter was about 2 miles southwest of Chino Hills and about 5 miles southeast of Diamond Bar, the USGS said. Chino Hills is about 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.
The center was about 7.6 miles deep. In general, earthquakes centered closer to the Earth's surface produce stronger shaking and can cause more damage than those further underground.
A 5.8 magnitude quake is considered by the USGS to be "moderate," which can cause slight damage to buildings and others structures. About 500 can happen globally each year, the survey says.

It's been down-graded to a 5.6 (big difference, right?). My husband and I were in the Northridge earthquake on the nineth floor of a hotel ('94, 6.6)and also the Loma Preada earthquake ('89, 7.2) up here in Northern CA. They were BOTH whoppers!!!!

Whoaaa!

Are we having fun yet?

Phew!

I thought I was on a roller coaster!

I tried to get hold of someone, and they said she left the office because her neighbor called and she had to rush home to Yorba Linda and take care of a broken water main!

I'm so sympathetic, I didn't even care. They've had my phone message for 24 hours! "Is this how you treat all your customers?"

I know, I'm mean.

Shake, rattle and California!

My cell phone did not work immediately after..I kept getting call failed.
The news is reporting that most cell carriers were notworking for a while after. That is a bit disturbing in case of destruction.
Everyone was calling and texting at the same time.

We felt it hard here at the school in Hesperia. We about 40 mins. from Chino. My in laws live there, no damage but scared them. My folks live in Chino but they are visiting in Utah right now.

Pretty darn big that one was!

Haven't been able to get in touch with in-laws. All phone circuits are busy even the cell lines.

I am working on a commercial project in Palm Springs. They just emailed me and said it was very strong out there. Strongest they have ever felt.
They are going to check all buildings for damage now.

Wow....what a ride. That was pretty scary!!! We felt it pretty strong here in the valley. About 30 strong seconds.

Our phones are working, but I hear that Verizon is out of service right now.
