The first 24-hour on-call crisis intervention unit within a U.S. law enforcement agency, the Victim Assistance Unit was initially started by the Indianapolis Police Department on August 4, 1975. Created in response to a growing public concern for victims of crime, the Victim Assistance Unit continues to provide a critical service for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

Wireless Amber Alerts

What is the Wireless AMBER Alerts Initiative?

The national Wireless AMBER Alerts Initiative is a voluntary partnership between the wireless industry, the United States Department of Justice, and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), to distribute AMBER Alerts to wireless subscribers who opt in to receive the messages and are able to receive text messages on their wireless devices.

The first three hours after a child's abduction are the most critical to recovery efforts. This statistic was the driving force behind the creation of the AMBER alerts program, an early response system that began in 1997 using radio as its primary delivery method. The program has helped reunite more than 260 children with their families.

Sign up for free AMBER Alerts on your cell phone. Receive important information about the child or any known information about the abductors or the vehicle. If you spot the vehicle, the suspect or the child described in the Alert, call 911.

Anyone capable of receiving text messages and whose wireless carrier is a participant in the program can sign up to receive Wireless AMBER Alerts.
