So her cell was turned on Saturday for just a couple of seconds - my thought is someone found it. Now to find that someone and figure out where they found the phone. I wonder if it was on long enough to get a ping somewhere?

Family of missing teen clings to hope
No new leads in case
The family of a bookish 14-year-old girl missing for six days believes she was abducted by a stranger and said it has hired a private investigator to bolster its search.
Maurice Dubois, standing next to private investigator Bill Garcia, held a press conference Thursday to ask for more public help in finding his daughter, Amber Leeanne Dubois

Unfortunately, the phone doesn't have GPS or anything so they weren't able to get anything from it other than it was in Escondido. There's no way to know if she used it or it was someone else.
There will be a candlelight vigil tonight at her school for her.

I live about 18 miles from where this girl went missing and I'm deeply troubled that more news was not made available to the news stations sooner.
The police are really dropping the ball on this one. There should have been an Amber Alert.

That's just scary. It seems the police are treating this as if she ran away, yet Amber's history indicates that she would NOT runaway.
Prayers for Amber, I hope she is home soon.

I am glad you are all discussing this on this forum. I wish this case could get some national attention like other cases. I live in the next town over. This is very sad that LE is treating this as if she ran away. Her parents said she would never do this. She was a nice girl that never missed a day of school and was an A student. Not a girl that would run off at 7am with someone. I wish Nancy Grace would cover this story. This girl is only 14 years old.
------------------------------------
A candlelight vigil will be held this evening for a missing 14-year-old girl whose family has hired a private detective to search for her.
The FBI also is getting involved in the search for Amber Leeann Dubois, who has been missing for nearly a week, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
The candlelight vigil will be held this evening in front of Escondido High School. She was last seen walking to the school on Friday morning.
Escondido Police is treating the case as a possible abduction but is not ruling out the possibility she ran away, according to the newspaper.
Amber's father, Maurice Dubois, who lives in Orange County and has custody of her on the weekends, said the family is convinced she was abducted, the newspaper reported.
The family has maintained that running away is "completely out of character" for the teen. They said she is a good student who was excited about starting a school project that involved a lamb the Friday she disappeared.
The family has hired private detective Bill Garcia, who has been involved in a number of high-profile cases in the county, the newspaper reported.
Since her disappearance, there have been reported sightings of the teen, police officials said. But none have been confirmed by police.
Amber is white, 5 feet 5, 130 pounds, with short brown hair and blue eyes. At the time of her disappearance, she was wearing dark-colored clothing, including a hooded sweatshirt and tennis shoes.
Investigators are asking anyone with information about Amber's whereabouts to call Escondido police at (760) 839-4722.

BTW, there is a big door to door search going on in Escondido today for this young girl. The community has gotten together to do a search finally!

A child is a child, is a child. I'm sure at first look, the SDPD said "runaway". I've been here 12 years, I know the lazy gits (sorry if that's too harsh - just a statement we use in the UK). There absolutely should have been an amber alert.
If there's anything you need, or anything I can do, you can reach me via MY Space at:

It's public, so you can get a message to me quickly. I will also post info so my San Diego friends can see it.
I'm here to help, and only down the road.
Praying for you and Amber Leeanne.

CNN had Amber front and center on their website today. Let's hope word is finally getting out on a national level.

I just learned of Amber's case today (I am embarassed to say). I was blogging about the passing of Kelsey's Law (for Kelsey Smith) that requires cell companies to cooperate with law enforcement in providing ping data in missing persons emergencies.
Amber's case caught my attention as she was using her cell phone just prior to her disappearance. I'll keep my eyes and ears open on this.

This reminds me of the Kara Kopetsky case. They treated Kara as a runaway (still are imo) and her case did not get the coverage it deserved till Kelsey was abducted. Even then it did not get alot of coverage.
So very sad these cases do not make it public and get the attention they deserve alot sooner.
I am praying they find Amber safe and sound very soon!

I just heard of this too- I saw it said her cell phone was on for 20 minutes the day after she disappeared, and then off again. I don't think that means she lost it and someone found it - kids usually have "mom" and "dad" in their phones, and if someone randomly found a phone you'd think they'd dial "mom" or "dad" and say they found a phone.
At least I'd hope? I hope she is found, it doesn't sound like she'd run away

I'm confused. In one article, it notes that Amber did not use the computer, instead opted to read and write. In another it states She is an avid reader, good with electronics and computers, loves wolves and collects them, and, she takes time to text with her Grandmom.
So - what to believe? If she was a computer user, she very well could have met a man on line. Has LE confiscated her computer?
I know she hasn't used her phone, but for 20 seconds, the day after she went missing. But this is very curious to me -- did she leave with someone she met on the internet, or am I way off base? Remember - we have to keep all options open.
per cnn: Amber's parents say she was a not-so-typical teen who shunned social networking sites like MySpace.com and Facebook and preferred reading, drawing and spending time with friends at home over hanging out at the mall.
"When she'd get in trouble, I'd have to take her books away," McGonigle said, chuckling as she recalled her daughter's habit of hiding under her bed sheets with a flashlight so she could read late at night.
Best,
Melanie

I read that Amber had a check in her pocket that morning to buy a lamb for FFA, something that she had really been looking forward to. It was also said that Amber was reportedly seen walking with an unknown person a few days before her disappearance. It wasn't said if this person was male, female, adult, teen, etc. No description.

She left her home in Escondido, California, around 7 a.m. for school with a check in hand, a down payment on a baby lamb that she was going to raise and care for as part of her Future Farmers of America class.
It was a day that she'd been looking forward to for more than a year, her family says. But she never made it to school and hasn't been heard from since, prompting authorities to launch a massive search for the missing teen.
"She would not have given up that lamb for anything," her mother, Carrie McGonigle, said. "She's a wholesome kid. She doesn't run amok like most teenagers. She did not run away, I guarantee it."
Her cell phone was turned on once for about 20 seconds the day after she disappeared and has not been turned on since then, Escondido Police spokesman Lt. Bob Benton said.
Her mother and her live-in boyfriend voluntarily submitted

Here is a link from CNN. I hope they have something on Nancy Grace or Greta about Amber. It's terrible when a child can't even go to school without being missing. I think back to the days I walked to school and we never even thought of going missing in those days. That was in the 50's. I guess some kids went missing but without 24/7 news you never heard about it unless it was right in your area.

A local investigator in the case of missing Escondido teenager Amber Dubois, said a woman, who looks a lot like the missing 14-year-old, told him that some men got out of a van February 2 near Escondido High School and approached her.
When the men asked her to get in the van, she said no, and they chased her, Bill Garcia said. The woman said she ran into an elementary school and escaped.

spotted once or twice over the weekend?

On Saturday, police received a report of Amber seen walking near Palomar Medical Center with two other teens but have been unable to confirm that report, according to the North County Times. The teen's cell phone was activated for a few seconds Saturday afternoon, but other than that, her parents said, it has been off since she disappeared.

Either someone found it and turned it on OR ???? idk. If someone found it, you would think that they would still be using it or they would have turned it in somewhere. It is very likely that this phone is sitting in some lost and found and no one has taken the time to run it down to find out who it belongs too!
My prayers are with Amber and her family,
