FL-Baby Shannon Dedrick Found Alive
A Florida baby who has been missing for five days was found alive under her baby sitter's bed, The AP reported.
Seven-month-old Shannon Dedrick was reported missing by her parents on Saturday morning, prompting dozens of law enforcement agents and volunteers to scour the woods near the family's home.
When investigators were granted access to search the sitter's house, they discovered the infant tucked in a box under a bed. Shannon was taken to a local hospital but she appeared healthy, police said.
Authorities plan to charge the sitter Elizabeth Baker, her husband James Arthur Baker and the child's mother, Chrystina Lynn Mercer; however, police would not say what charges would be issued or why they believe the baby's mother was involved.

CHIPLEY — The bizarre four-day search for a missing 7-month-old girl ended early Wednesday as investigators announced they had “good news,” before the sheriff opened a door to reveal baby Shannon Dedrick, alive and well.
“I’ll never forget that time as long as I live,” Washington County Sheriff Bobby Haddock said as he introduced the 7-month-old child to the media at the 1 a.m. press conference.
The baby was brought from Northwest Florida Community Hospital, where she had been evaluated after being found at 9:55 p.m. Wednesday in a box under the bed at the 3395 Orange Hill Road home of Susan Baker, the baby’s sitter, and Baker’s husband, James.

CHIPLEY — Washington County Sheriff Bobby Haddock announced the arrest of Susan Baker, 50, and Cristina Lynn Mercer, 25, both of Chipley, in the disappearance of 7-month-old Shannon Dedrick.
Baker, the child's babysitter and half-sister to the child's father, was charged with:
* Neglect of a child with aggravated circumstances - 2nd degree felony
* Interference with child custody - 3rd degree felony
* Filing a false report regarding a missing child - 1st degree misdemeanor
* Filing a false report of a crime - 1st degree misdemeanor
* Contributing to the delinquency of a child - 1st degree misdemeanor
Mercer, the child's mother, was charged with:
* Interference with child custody - 3rd degree felony
* Desertion of a child - 3rd degree felony

* Filing a false report of a crime - 1st degree misdemeanor
* Contributing to the delinquency of a child - 1st degree misdemeanor
According to a news release from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, investigators learned that on the night of Oct. 30, Baker and Mercer agreed to allow Baker to take permanent custody of the baby. The two arranged to meet at 1:30 a.m. on Oct. 31 at Mercer's residence for Mercer to give the child to Baker. Mercer later reported the child missing at 11:23 a.m.

Court records show that Elizabeth Baker was charged in South Carolina with assault and battery with intent to kill and assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature in 1987. After being convicted, she was sentenced to 10 years in prison. The sentence was suspended to 80 days.
She was extradited to South Carolina from Chipley in 2000, and charged in the disappearance of 3-year-old Paul Leonard Baker, who has been missing since March 1987. Baker wasn't indicted by a grand jury in the case. The child was never found, according to the Beaufort County, S.C., sheriff's office. Police reports don't indicate the child's possible relation.
WTF!

One more thing that scorches my heiney. Why is attempted murder a lighter sentence than murder? It's one of the few places a person can be rewarded for incompetence.

Soooo happy that baby Shannon is alive and well! Certainly a miracle ending and I wish more of these cases ended this way. She's adorable!
I'm heartbroken that the mother and possibly the father were somehow involved, but I still feel that the "babysitter" manipulated the couple and took advantage of their diminished mental capacity (as was previously reported).

Shannon was found in a 2x3 cedar box under the bed. She'd been there for 12 hrs. Mom is in jail along with the babysitter. What is wrong with these people???

This is totally disgusting. They're saying there were only small holes in the box and it was shoved against a wall surrounded by other stuff under the bed. She easily could've suffocated. MOO

I wanted to feel sorry for the mom, because she was brainwashed into giving her baby to SB, but I cant. When I saw the moms eyes, all I saw was evil. She is not an innocent victim. If the LE can get her life in prison, then she wont have to be bothered with the baby.
I dont know how, but I think it might be reveling if we would trace SB back as far as possible. Do we know the area she grew up in? I can check in classmates.com someone might remember her.

This reminds me of a similar case in England last year, with an older child, the mother conspired with a relative to fake an abduction, they were after the substantial reward money... they are both in jail now and the child is in care.

Chipley is 70 miles from where I live. I thought we were closer but apparently not according to google maps. Anyway we had a good article in our local paper about this today and I thought it was quite revealing.

Hundreds of miles and 22 years of mystery separate baby Shannon Dedrick and toddler Paul Baker.
Susan Baker will always tie them together.

Baby Shannon trials planned for July
May 03, 2010 07:38:00 PM
Both women accused in last year’s disappearance of 7-month-old Shannon Dedrick will face trial in July, a prosecutor said Monday. Susan Baker and Crystina Mercer each had pretrial hearings Monday in Chipley, according to Washington County court records. Prosecutor Greg Wilson said the court set another pretrial hearing for July 9, and the trial will follow soon after.
Baker faces up to 35 years in prison if convicted. She was charged with child abuse, giving false information to law enforcement and interfering with child custody in November, after a Washington County sheriff’s deputy found the baby hidden in a wooden box under a bed in her home.
Searchers had been looking for the baby for several days after Mercer reported her missing Halloween night.
Mercer was charged with giving false information and making a false 911 call, but Wilson has said he isn’t sure if she secretly gave up her baby as charged, or if Baker kidnapped the child.
