WI - Katie Cruz, 32, Mukwonago, 7 Nov 2009

<snip>

MUKWONAGO - A mother has gone missing, and police in Mukwonago are asking for your help in locating her.

On Tuesday, search dogs and helicopters continued to comb the woods in the hopes of finding 32-year old Katie Cruz.
Cruz’ family made a plea to her in a news conference on Tuesday.

“We miss you Katie, and we want you to just come back. We love you very much,” said Nicole King, Cruz’ sister.

According to the Town of Mukwonago Police Department, Cruz told her 3 children, ages 12,10, and 3 to go a nearby park on Saturday morning. She said she would meet them later. She never showed up. Police say she may have been disturbed over something.

.....

Cruz did not take her wallet, car, or cell phone with her.

Police search for Katie Cruz

<snip>

The problem with the area we are searching is standing cornfields," said Turner.

Turner said they have searched Katie's e-mail records, her Facebook and MySpace pages and have found nothing unusual. They have also questioned friends and family.

"One of her friends said that had he seen her children walking alone, he would have suspected something was not right," said Turner. "(The friend said) she has never walked away from her kids before."

Katie's sister, Nicole King, reported her sister missing Saturday. King said she talked with Katie earlier Saturday morning and that Katie had said she wanted to spend some time alone with her children that day.

"We miss you, Katie, and we want you to come back," said King.

Katie's mother, Pat Esposito, brother, Daniel Brzycki and stepfather, R.G. Esposito, were all present at the conference and thanked Turner and the Town of Mukwonago Police Department for their efforts.

R.G. Esposito, the last person to speak with Katie, said she called him at about 11 a.m. Saturday and told him that she had received a phone call from a friend. Esposito was out of town at the time.

"She sounded completely fine," he said.

Pat Esposito said her daughter was very loved and that she had always been a good mother.

"She's a hoverer," said Pat. "This whole situation is very unusual … She has been very stressed with the divorce."

Turner said Cruz, who is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, 135 pounds with hazel eyes and light brown hair, was last seen wearing a gray hooded Abercrombie & Fitch sweatshirt and black tennis shoes.

"Right now, we are searching in the area of the residence, but as the investigation goes on, we will be expanding and contacting other agencies," said Turner.

Residents who live in the area are asked to check their campers or tree houses to see if she has taken shelter in the area. Anyone with information about the case should call the Mukwonago Police Department at (262) 363-5188.

she sure sounds stressed out....I hope she continues to be safe...I always get worried about these missing women when there's divorce/custody looming or recently occurred.

I don't understand the article. It says she walked, ran, and ended up in Glenview (IL). Isn't that quite far from Mukwanago (WI)? Must be more to it than just that.

I'm so glad Katie was found safe. But what a weird case. She must have been deeply disturbed about something to send her kids to a park, tell them she will get them later, and not show up. I wonder how long those kids sat at the park before someone realized mom wasn't coming???

Really weird stuff here.

Missing Mom Could Face Criminal Charges

<snip>

MUKWONAGO - Missing mother Katie Cruz has been found, but the mystery behind her disappearance hasn't been solved. Police believe she wandered off on her own, and now she could face criminal charges.

After three days of searching, three days of helicopters and search dogs combing the woods, and three days of worrying for family members, Katie Cruz was found on Tuesday night. She called relatives from a café in Glenview, Illinois, according to Town of Mukwonago police.

...

"We are going to be looking into charges of child neglect for leaving her children behind," Chief Turner said

....

The helicopters used in the search were already paid for with a homeland security grant, and the search dogs were from a team of volunteers, police said. However, the Town of Mukwonago Police Department did pay officers for about 10 hours of overtime during the search.
