The Barnwell County Sheriff's Office says Carolyn Jean Smith was last seen this past Monday in Beaufort. They believe she's in the early stages of Alzheimer's and never returned home from a doctor's visit.

Bless her heart...too bad someone didn't take her to/from her doctor's visit.

Within the last month, I've read about at least a dozen cases of these Silver Alerts.....sadly, not all are found alive after they wandered away from home.

Prayers for Carolyn that she's somewhere safe & someone will help her find her way home.

I can't find anymore info on her. I have set up email news alerts for the local stations.

here's info on her car...thought I'd post it here in case our WSers in SC might see it:

She may be driving a gold-colored 2006 Ford 500 sedan. The car has a South Carolina license plate of ARH395.

I live approximately an hour from Barnwell. Beaufort really isn't that close to Barnwell for someone to drive for a doctor's appointment. (especially for soneone with Alzheimer's disease.) I think that it is around 80 miles or so. There are rural roads and small towns from Beaufort to Barnwell. I hope that the lady will be found very soon.

Carolyn S said to be in early stages of Alzheimer's.
And from what I know, early stages can mean, memory lapses, repeating same question or story over and over.
Family probably thought she was okay to drive, she may not have had any
confusion driving before.

ot: my best friend has alzheimer's and she still drives. i don't consider that a good thing.

Barnwell woman with Alzheimer's still missing after a weeks search

<snip>

News 12 at 11 o'clock-- December 20, 2009

BARNWELL, S.C. -- The family of Carolyn Jean Smith, continues to search for the 67-year old woman, who has been missing for a week now.

Authorities from Barnwell to Beaufort, S.C. are on the look out for the elderly woman, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease.

Granddaughter, Casey Mixson and daughter, Catherine Thomas are both grief stricken and confused trying to find where Carolyn Jean Smith is.

"She doesn't know where she's at," Mixson said. "I just want her home."
...

Thomas doesn't want to either as her daughter and her have went everywhere trying to find her, putting up hundreds of fliers and calling everyone to try to get her home safely.

"Barnwell County, Hampton County, Allendale County, Beaufort County, anything we can think of doing, we're doing it," Thomas said.

The family said neighbors of Smith haven't seen her since last Saturday. The family received word that investigators had located a "ping" on her cell phone near Islandton and Walterboro, S.C., but other than that the search is getting dim.

Wow! Beaufort and Islandton/Waterboro are about 50 miles apart! I wonder if she became disoriented or if that's where her dr apt was? I hope Carolyn is safe, but this just doesn't bode well. We've seen a few silver alerts lately that haven't had great outcomes. Prayers for Carolyn

So very glad that Carolyn S found alive!

So many times, if a person has Alzheimer's, it does end in tragedy.

I am so happy to read that Ms. Smith has been found. It feels good to know that people care and are compelled to search for a loved one. As I am older and getting very forgetful, sometimes getting lost and not recognizing where I am, it gives me hope that if I get lost, someone will look for me.
Happy Holiday wishes to all WSers!
