***Cadmium in Children's jewelry***

Please read the following carefully if you purchased children's costume jewelry made in China and sold by WalMart, Claire's or other regional retail chains...

Due to the lead bans, Chinese manufacturers have been substituting CADMIUM in their mixes of metals. There is NOTHING good about Cadmium-there is no percentage that is safe, but the AP noted in it's testing that the highest levels of Cadmium were found in Princess and the Frog jewelry sold at WalMart in November and December of 2009. There were some pieces from Claire's that were also found to have an equivilent amount.

"Some of the most troubling test results were for bracelet charms sold at Walmart, at the jewelry chain Claire's and at a dollar store. High amounts of cadmium also were detected in "The Princess and The Frog" movie-themed pendants.

"There's nothing positive that you can say about this metal. It's a poison," said Bruce A. Fowler, a cadmium specialist and toxicologist with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. On the CDC's priority list of 275 most hazardous substances in the environment, cadmium ranks No. 7.
Jewelry industry veterans in China say cadmium has been used in domestic products there for years. Zinc, the metal most cited as a replacement for lead in imported jewelry being sold in the United States, is a much safer and nontoxic alternative. But the jewelry tests conducted for AP, along with test findings showing a growing presence of cadmium in other children's products, demonstrate that the safety threat from cadmium is being exported."

What PIS**D me off the most was the statement from the Walmart official who indicated that there were not currently any guidelines for the use of cadmium in children's jewelry.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? It is the 7th most poisonous chemical known to us. So you want to give it to KIDS???

HEAVY METALS are a huge huge problem for a growing central nervous system and brain. HUGE.

Walmart & Claire's - shame on you! How may other retailers are out there selling it? Plenty, most likely!

The CPSC is trying to replicate the tests right now to see if they get the same results so they can issue a recall....it makes me SHIVER to think what might be happening between now and then to any child in danger of swallowing the jewelry or even wearing it if they are hardwired for neurological issues....

I am willing to believe that there are no guidelines for the use of rocket fuel in childrens jewelry as well, so I have to believe the statement attributed to the Walmart rep was the complete BS which can spring to the lips when one is trying to cover ones own AS*. Sorry for the potty mouth today, but REALLY.

I know I am making you crazy with back to back posts, but one of my hot button issues is heavy metal poisoning.

Read this from today's article:
Three flip flop bracelet charms sold at Walmart contained between 84 and 86 percent cadmium. The charms fared the worst of any item on the stomach acid test; one shed more cadmium in 24 hours than what World Health Organization guidelines deem a safe exposure over 60 weeks for a 33-pound. child.

Thank you for posting all this info-- I am appalled! Good grief-- consumers in this country need to boycot our corporations for stooping to this level. What BS!!!

OK yeah I'm pissed, but instead of sitting on their as$es worrying about crap they are never going to get passed right now, isn't there an FDA problem here? If we have a USDA to try and keep mad cow out of our meat, isn't there any agency overseeing what the hell we are importing and can't there be sanctions for countries like China who continue to poison us? I don't believe this is all innocent on their part - I think the poisoning slowly of our children is by design and even our produce is coming from China. Pretty scary, but cripes - shouldn't our government be enacting some kind of protection "for the children" they are always so worried about?

This is worth saying twice. At the least.

I don't trust goods from China worth a rat's behind. Actually, I would love to see the tags and stickers again that say "Made in the USA," but if any of the components are imported, that would give us a sense of false security.

My favorite coffee cup came from Walmart, "Made in China" stamped on the bottom, and every time I put that cup to my lips I wonder WTH is in that blue paint around the rim.

Where are the sanction-police, anyway? The thought that that country would send contaminated goods over here for children is disgusting. It needs to be stopped, and the USA needs to take a firm stance on this, and let China and other countries know that we don't want dangerous goods sent to our country, most especially items intended for our children.

Okay, preface to say-- this is MOO-- but all this carp from China seems like a new kind of war... and, <<ahem>>, they are winning.

Our senseless consumerism is being used to destroy us. Children's jewelry? Uh, yeah, we need that. WTH? We need to wise up, as a population-- because our government is interested in the bottom line, not our lives. Ugh... pathetic.

Additionally, Inez Tenenbaum, Commision Chairman of the CPSC is requesting that the items be disposed of in a manner that meets with STATE and FEDERAL ENVIRONMENTAL laws.

This is the stuff your kids have been playing with. It is, using the term loosely, hazardous waste.
