This article says his bike was found at 8:00 pm. Monday.
The other article only said hours later.
That's the only thing new I noticed on this article.

Gosh, while searching for info on this case, I keep coming up with information on a very chilling case of another Brett Smith. He was in NC tho.

Here is a map from his neighborhood to the McDonalds. It's big so sorry if it wonks the margins.

According to investigators, the boy left home on his bicycle. That bike was recovered around 8 p.m. Monday at the McDonald's on Hardscrabble Road. Deputies say Brett is in foster care, and they believe he wanted to see members of his family in Aiken.
Investigators say they don't believe that he is in imminent danger and that his case doesn't meet the criteria to issue an Amber Alert.

I hate when they say that about a CHILD.

That looks like quite a ways to be riding his bike? Maybe it looks further than it actually is?
On another note - it says Brett was in foster care and wanted to see members of his family. It sounds as if LE thinks Brett has headed off on his own to see his family. Sooooooo who picked him up at the McDonalds? Or can you catch a bus there? How did this child get from the McDonalds to Aiken (if in fact that is where he is headed)? It seems strange to me that he would just leave his bike at the McDonalds?
Prayers he is alright and is somewhere safe and LE finds him SOON!

It's one mile away. Which is nothing when you are 12. My son used to ride five to 10 miles a day on bike rides with his godmother. lol
That being said, I never would have let him ride alone, a mile away.
You would think if he was meeting someone to take him to his family, he'd be there by now. It's Wed.
That his bike was left doesn't make sense to me either.

If he went inside McDonald's, I'm sure the security camera would have him on videotape.
If he didn't go inside McDonald's, I'm really not sure if there are security cameras in the parking lot though.

Investigator Mack did confirm to me that they were able to get surveillance from the McDonald’s earlier today, and there is a film technician trying to enhance the footage to get a glimpse as to what happened on Monday. Hopefully by tomorrow, we will have more information on that. I was also told that Brett’s family thought he wanted to visit extended family in an adjacent county, but those family members say they have not seen or heard from him.

Mark Klaas said he is in danger. That the police should be looking at this as an abduction until proved otherwise. That they were doing this child a dis-service by saying he isn't in danger.
There is over 100 sex offenders in the area.

His bio-parents live about an hour away.
That it is Wednesday and he disappeared on Monday, it's not looking good.

I kinda thought maybe something happened to him before he got to McDonald's and who ever did it may have taken his bike????
But, it's good to know there are cameras in the parking lot, so maybe that can be ruled out.

My first thought was perhaps he called someone in the family to come meet him or pick him up from McDonalds but if they have not even heard from him...for now I'll rule that out. Which leaves me to believe that perhaps he asked someone (a stranger) for a ride to his family's house. I don't know why LE is saying he's not in imminent danger!!! That infuriates me! He is a missing child!!!
Hopefully they can find something on the surveillance footage...

Maybe he met someone online who said they'd give him a lift to see his family and to meet them at McDonalds....then snatched him from there. LE needs to smarten up. It's not always so cut and dried these days.

And 12 is young!!!!
I would think that anytime a 12 year old's whereabouts are not known, they would be in danger!!!
This floors me.

It's pathetic that Mark Klaas has more brains and sense in this matter than LE. Any missing child, no matter what age, is in danger.
His bike has been left behind....that really scares me. Boys are no safer than girls, unfortunately.
Lord, I hope he's alright.

I live just 2 miles from this boy. I am sick to my stomach over this. Not in danger??! He's 12 and no on knows where he is. That is dangerous!! I'm so glad to hear it was on NG but the local news stations are acting like it's not a story worth reporting. However, they spend 10 minutes on Tiger Woods being in rehab. Sickening!!
I heard back from the Richland County Sheriff after emailing him a couple of days ago. I want to know if he needs community help with flyers or a search party or what and he says he will have someone contact me. It is cold and raining here today and I hope he is at least somplace safe with heat. My heart is broken

I didnt save my post When is the last time we know he was seen other by someone not directly involved? I reported to sheriffs dept about a man and a young boy walking on I10 between Bonifay and Chipley Fl. time near 2:15p. Its 362 miles from Richland co SC to here in Washington Co Fl. If we know 100% he was seen at 1p, then Im on the wrong track. In the posted picture of Brett, he appears heavy set, the boy I saw appeared thin. Travel time would be about 6 hours. I wouldnt think the people who said 1p would be that wrong, but we dont know dittally bump anymore on who is and who isnt lying.
Im as sick of hearing about Tiger Woods as I was M Jackson and N smith. medial give us a break.

Thank you for joining us jhol74 and welcome!!
Thank you for your local perspective - that is always so appreciated.
Can you tell me if the distance to the Mcdonald's where the bike was found is really that far? It looks to be quite a ride from his home.
Thanks so much!
