Canada - Lachlan Cranswick, 41, Deep River near Ottawa ON, 18 Jan 2010 - #1

Lachlan Cranswick, 41, disappeared when he left his job at the AECL plant in Chalk River at about 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 18. A colleague called police a few days later when he failed to show up for work.
When police searched his home in Deep River on Jan. 23, Cranswick's front door was unlocked. His car, wallet and passport were still there.

*snip

Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call Ontario Provincial Police at 613-584-3500.

No trace of scientist

DEEP RIVER -As police and volunteers continue the search for a missing Deep River man, investigators remain puzzled about the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.

*snip

Mr. Cranswick is five feet, 10 inches tall, with a slim build, hazel eyes and brown receding hair. He would be wearing glasses and a beige quarter-length parka with fur on the hood. He might also be wearing a fur hat with ear flaps.
"His description is based on clothing we've not been able to locate," said Det. Const. Pinkerton.

Scientist's disappearance baffles investigators

Brother, friend fear foul play

Quote:
He was described Wednesday by his brother, Rupert, as a "typical nerd," but talkative when it comes to his work.

Rupert Cranswick, reached at home in Australia, worries that his brother has met with foul play.

"Take one good knock and he'd be out like a light," he said, referring to his brother's small physique.

Cranswick was last seen leaving work on Jan. 18, hopping a bus to bring him home to Deep River.

A friend said Cranswick took out the garbage sometime on the morning of Jan. 19.

"We know that his garbage cans were out for the Tuesday morning," said friend Chris Knight. "That's the last evidence of him being around."
JMO, but wouldn't that only mean he made it back home from work on the 18th? He could have taken the garbage out that night.
Why wasn't he reported missing by his co-workers/employer when he didn't show up for work on the 19th? Nobody at work noticed him missing all those days?
There could have been footprints on his driveway or on snow surrounding his house. K-9 units could have followed his scent.

Quote:
Knight reported Cranswick missing to the police after he failed to show up for a curling championship on Jan. 23. Worried, Knight went to Cranswick's house to check on him. His friend wasn't there and the door was unlocked.

Police say Cranswick's wallet, laptop and the GPS system he uses when he goes for walks were found inside the house and his car was parked in the garage.

"I'm personally thinking some misfortune fell on him. Either he got hit by a vehicle, or someone took him away," Knight said. "I just can't think of anything else. I just can't see him running off."
Poor guy I hope he is found safe and unharmed.

Lachlan Cranswick is a very intelligent man, I believe this is where he works.

DEEP RIVER -Police have come up with no new leads in the search for a research scientist who has been missing for more than two weeks.
Lachlan Cranswick, a scientist with the National Research Council who was seconded to Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, was last seen on Jan. 18. He had boarded a bus which left Chalk River Laboratories for Deep River.
Police were notified after the 41-year-old Australian native failed to show up for a curling championship on Jan. 23 at the Deep River Curling and Squash Club. Mr. Cranswick is the club's vice-president.
"He missed a curling match which his friends thought was strange because he's an avid curler," Detective Constable Chris Pinkerton, of the Renfrew County Crime Unit of the Ontario Provincial Police, said Thursday.
Officers checked his residence on Summit Street and found the door was unlocked but Mr. Cranswick was not home. Police say his car was parked in the garage and a collection of personal items, including a Global Positioning System (GPS) and wallet, were found inside the house.

I agree with you Patience, he is definitely a very intelligent man! I am wondering if his camera was found inside his home. He had lately photographed:
- wildflowers of Deep River
- fall scenes around Deep River (Autumn 2009)
- First attempt at Christmas Lights outside the house (10th December 2009)

What worries me the most is that his GPS was found in his house. Also the unlocked door, unless he was used to leaving his door unlocked when he went for his midnight walks.

How about wildlife in the area? are there bears, wolves, coyotes?

Patience, I just read your post about the Missing Scientists! Anything is possible, I mean if he left his car at home, then he couldn't have walked at night, in winter time, that far away from his home. Maybe someone knocked at his door and abducted him after he put his garbage out? Or he could just have been disoriented without his GPS, and got lost in the woods. I really hope he decided he needed a break/holidays, and is now in a ski cabin; he has a link of one in his homepage. There are so many links in his homepage; I'm hoping LE has gone through them all and see if there is something helpful that will give some leads on his whereabouts.

Here we can see him from all angles (360 degree), though he looks quite young, not updated image)

Deep River Ski Club has completed a check of its trails

Quote:
While search efforts have been scaled back, the Deep River Ski Club has completed a check of its trails but have so far found no trace of the missing man. Last week, members of the OPP Emergency Response Team and the OPP Canine Unit combed the woods surrounding the town, while an OPP helicopter conducted a detailed aerial search which extended to the Quebec side of the Ottawa River.
http://www.thedailyobserver.ca/Artic...aspx?e=2436426

Map of Deep River
For some reason I thought his house on Summit Street backed onto open woods, but I can see on this map that that was not the case. There is a LOT of woods surrounding the city; however, I cannot imagine Mr. Cranswick going for a long nocturnal walk into the woods without taking his cellphone, GPS, a flashlight. It's more likely his midnight strolls were to the ski trails.
In this map, we can also see the proximity of Deep River to the Ottawa River.

some additional photos

I might advance Lachlan as having a good 'theatrical face.' In that it could assume various personas - and handsome in his own distinctive way. The more pictures - the better. Trust this as reasonable.

Also, (as noted) he's a particularly sharp cookie - crystallography (x-ray diffraction analysis) is not for the faint-of-heart - certainly not everyone's 'cup of tea.'

He's accumalated a sizeable list of links on his homepage - a lot of 'esoterica' but also some pretty volatile - potentially controversial subject matters - including black ops in the nuclear industry - primarily in historical cold-war Australia .. never-the-less pretty touchy subject matter/material. There is other eyebrow raising material in his homepage as well. It's a veritable fountain of all manner of unusual facts and factoids. He was (is) a pretty prolific internet presence. He's missed by his colleagues - they are at a loss for words. Hope he shows up (safe and sound). http://lachlan.bluehaze.com.au/other-links.html

Sadly no news maxfactor. This is an unrelated matter, but thought I would post it, just because of the mysterious circumstances of Lachlan's disappearance (apparently late evening Jan 18 or morning hours Jan 19, 2010), leaving everything at home. For someone like him, that likes to document everything, IMHO this doesn't look like a suicide.

I know everyone is now trying to pin every mysterious disappearance and unsolved murder on Russell Williams, and I know this is highly far-fetched (since Lachlan is not female), but I think it's something that can be looked at, if only just to rule RW out:

rs&bbm from this article : http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/a...murder-charges
Quote:
Dr. Jerry Sovka, an Alberta farm kid who married Williams’ mother when the boy was 7, took his family from Toronto to Montreal to South Korea to Hawaii as an engineer with Atomic Energy Canada Ltd.
rs&bbm : http://www2.macleans.ca/2010/02/11/r...n-no-one-knew/
Quote:
Born in the Midlands region of England in 1963, Williams moved to Chalk River, Ont., where his father David Williams, a metallurgist, was hired at Canada’s best nuclear research facility.
Here is a map showing: (zoom in)
- Deep River (where Lachlan lives)
- Chalk River (where Lachlan works)
- Petawawa (Canadian Forces Base / Military Family Resource Centre)

I am really worried about Lachlan Cranswick now that you sleuthers found out there is a connection to the Sovka name and work at Atomic energy of Canada. Library and archives Canada has J. Sovka listed in their records and if I am reading this correctly, J. A. Sovka is the author of Response of cobalt neutron flux detectors / by J. A. Sovka
1969.

NAME(S): Sovka, J. A
Atomic Energy of Canada Limited
TITLE(S):*Response of cobalt neutron flux detectors / by J. A.
Sovka
PUBLISHER: Chalk River, Ont. : Atomic Energy of Canada Limited,
1969.
DESCRIPTION: 31 p.

NOTES: "AECL-3368".

I'd say there are a lot of odd coincidences. For example, the RW stepfather connection to Chalk River, where Lachlan worked. And the fact that RW was commander of this air force base:

http://www.trentonian.ca/ArticleDisp...true&e=1187471

Did you notice this from the Toronto Star article quoted above:

"'I spent my career doing things right and avoiding things that were wrong. But here, I can’t figure out what went wrong,' Sovka told the Globe and Mail in an interview from France, where he is now project manager for ITER, a $14.3 billion nuclear fusion project."

And how about this:

yikes

Thanks for those links Summer. Yikes! I don't know a lot about nuclear reactors and such but this isn't looking good for Lachlan. There are many links on the web that are pleas from other scientists for information about his disappearance. He is a well known and respected scientist and I hope for his safe return. The coincidences surrounding him and Russell Williams are hard to ignore.

check out his homepage .. specifically this page ... http://lachlan.bluehaze.com.au/other-links.html ... the guy is a HUGE Canuck eventhough he's from Australia .. his disappearance is meriting only local coverage - out in Ottawa .. hello?? The guy's a nuclear scientist. Earth to Canada - come in please - reality check. http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/tor/rnr/1593696147.html

Wow ,that article sums it up. I hadn't heard of this case until I saw it here. I agree Maxfactor we should do more to get his name out there.

Foul play is not a theory at this point in the investigations into two missing people in the Ottawa Valley. OPP are working on the theory that 51-year-old Tina Smithson may have left her home near Pakenham January 26th and fallen through the ice in a nearby creek. Meanwhile a similar theory is being suggested in the disappearence of 41-year-old Lachlan Cranswick who vanished after leaving work at AECL to return to his Deep River home on January 18th. The active searches for both have been suspended. According to Deep River Police Chief Michael Ueltzhoffer, he will not rule out a further search this spring, depending on what the continuing investigation finds.
