Chicago police issued a missing person's alert today for a woman who has been missing for nearly six weeks, officials said.

Carmelita Johnson, 47, was last seen by her relatives on Jan. 5, police said. Johnson is from the area near 55th St. and Seeley Avenue in the West Englewood neighborhood, police said.

According to the missing person's alert Johnson is described as African-American with a medium complexion, 5 feet 6 inches tall, 140 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair.

She was last seen wearing blue jeans, brown leather knee-length boots, a white three-quarter down coat and a pink or gray cap. Johnson walks with a limp and frequently visits the areas of the 6300 to 5800 block of Martin Luther King Drive, officials said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Chicago Police Department Special Victims Unit at 312-747-8385.

Body in Morgue For a Year is Missing Woman

Quote:
Carmelita Johnson went missing Jan. 5, 2010. For most of the time since then her body was in the Cook County morgue, but no one knew it.

"I'm very upset and angry that it took this long to identify my mother's body," one of her four daughters, Leslie Jackson, said this morning.

Chicago police first issued a missing persons alert for theEnglewood neighborhood woman on Feb. 16, 2010. By that time, she already had been missing six weeks. Relatives told police they last saw her the previous Jan. 5 and that she had been involved in a turbulent relationship with a man.

The following April 10, the body of an unidentified woman was found by a man walking his dog along the beach in the 8500 block of South Green Bay Avenue in the South Chicago neighborhood. Police surmised the body had washed ashore and opened a death investigation.

But no one connected Johnson and the Jane Doe body at the morgue, April 2010 Case No. 146.

Jackson said the first detective assigned to the case promised the family for months that he would collect DNA samples and have them compared to unknown women at the morgue. That never happened, Jackson said.

Police classified the case as suspended. Family members said they pressed to have the case reopened.

February 3, 2012 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- The family of a woman whose body was among those found stacked in the Cook County morgue has filed a lawsuit over the handling of her body.

There is currently a big problem with the Cook County Medical Examiners office where body's are stacked up and they can't explain why.

Carmelita was reported missing. She was found in the same county she was reported missing. There is NO excuse for the negligence in the Cook County ME's office.
