From the above link

"
A shocking discovery outside a Kentucky apartment complex -- a partially clothed teenager found dead in the snow. A resident spotted 15-year old Karen Kappelman's body at the Legends of Steeplechase apartment complex near I-75 in Boone County Sunday morning.
When detectives began their investigation, they left open the possibility that Kappelman had died from exposure to the weather. Since then, one of the few details investigators are confirming is that this was a homicide."

WOW - shocked. This happened maybe 10 -15 miles from me. They just said on the local news, the preliminary autopsy didn't show hypothermia, nor any visible signs of trauma, or any immediate cause of death. They said toxicology could take several weeks to be returned.

I found her facebook, but it is private - sure would like to see her latest entries. I hope this gal didn't take her life. Sooooooooo sad. :-((
Karen Kappelman facebook: http://www.facebook.com/search/?q=Ka....3836068443..1

RYLE High school in Boone County, Ky. The local news said she moved here from Alabama last October. The police said they have information about what was going on in her life just prior to her death but are keeping that information http://www.websleuths.com/forums/ima...rator.gifclose to the vest for now.
She was found without her pants and coat off but found nearby. They showed that footage. They also made a cast of a foot print near her body in case this is foul play.

Let me see if the footage is up - they have great shots and one by a marker #19 I can't tell on the tv what that is. http://www.wlwt.com/news/22698134/detail.html
Here is another report: http://www.wcpo.com/news/local/story...X-pJj8C1g.cspx
and this station is saying not homicide, but they first report said nothing can be ruled out at this point. http://www.local12.com/news/local/st...-DXDGnjWA.cspx

An autopsy done today shows no signs of sexual assault or trauma. Hypothermia is also ruled out as a cause of death and now investigators are left to wait for toxicology results, which could take two to three weeks. However, investigators can say with certainty that Kappelman's death was not a homicide.

I don't understand why the parents would not have reported her missing inless she was supposed to have spent the night at a friends house. If this is the case, that would be an excellent starting point for the investigation.

I still have questions as to why she would have been found pant and coatless. Drug use gone wrong? Date rape drug? Poor girl and her family also. Beautiful girl.

The last link said she was found not far from her apartment door. Sunnie I wonder if she was supposed to be staying over at a friends and then they just left her there if she was possibly drunk or something?

It's so so sad. A 15 year old. Beautiful girl. Just left there in the snow like that.

Right. Where were her pants and coat? It sounds like someone just dumped her there. Like she was too messed up and they figured they'd leave her and she'd make her way in? Heart breaking.

Edit to say: This young lady posted on February 24th on her Myspace that it was cold. Her phone was broken. That she was failing all her classes that began with the letter "E". That may have been a joke? Then she said life is swell.

Thanks to News Junkie for all the information. I feel so bad for this girl's family.

I read on another site the parents were at church when she was found. Perhaps they thought she was sleeping - teens these days often don't get up till noon. Also on another site it was stated that she was not spending the night with a friend.
If hypothermia is ruled out, that eliminates her having undressed herself due to hypothermia. The clothes were found very close by.
BTW -- I will say, in one of the videos you can see just one of the huge snow piles in the parking lot and there are lots of hills and valley's in this area and that complex. It is possible a person in an apartment higher than the parking lot level (or where her parents condo is) could have seen her.

If she still had panties on - I am wondering if she was drugged and an attempted rape took place and she ran but never made it home? Like she grabbed her pants and coats and ran out and dropped them or they blew to the close by area they were found. What has me smelling foul play is the foot prints to and away from the body. Unless the person who found the body is the prints, but I would think that would be known already.

local newspaper article

Kappelman was about 100 yards down the hill from the first-floor apartment where she lived with her parents. Her coat was lying nearby and she was only partially clothed, said Boone County Sheriffís spokesman Tom Scheben.

They also said: ďHer parents thought she was home,Ē he said.

Kappelmanís parents were home Saturday night and did not report her missing Sunday morning.

They likely thought she was sleeping, he said.

ďHow many 15-year-olds are up and out of bed at 10 a.m. on a weekend?Ē Scheben said. ďI know some of them that will sleep until noon if you let them, or later.Ē
http://news.cincinnati.com/article/2...n+teen+s+death

So, that agrees with what I was thinking re: hill and visibility and the teens don't get up early these days!

<<WOW - shocked. This happened maybe 10 -15 miles from me.>>

I know what you mean. I live about 5 miles from where this happened. It's pretty shocking when something like this happens close to home. I'm really surprised by the fact that her parents didn't miss her. I know she was 15 and all, but still ...

what led the police to say homicide was definitely ruled out? if she didnt die of hypothermia and her pants were off in the snow? the only other thing it could be is drink/drugs? but wouldnt simply passing out from either have resulted in hypothermia?

maybe an undiagnosed heart condition? but then why were her pants off?

So far, I only saw one station reporting that. I even heard on 11pm news that all possibilities are still on the table - so the reporting is spotty it seems.

HUGE red flags for me -- is seeing the pants and the coat lying in the snow. To me this almost screams got away from a date rape type situation. Perhaps someone put a ruffie in a drink and she got away, but couldn't get all the way home. Like she grabbed her stuff - started running but passed out before making it home. I have read that most of those ruffie type drugs leave your system fast, making them hard to trace. I hope we hear more today.

I can't imagine her passing out in the snow from drugs/alcohol and not having hypothermia. Along with not being fully clothed. The only scenario I can think of, with what they've relased, would be she died accidentally somehow and was dumped after the fact. Maybe by friends who were scared.

Things just don't add up for me......... from reporting to even the wording of the OBIT.
http://nky.cincinnati.com/article/AB...al-service-set
OBIT:
http://news.cincinnati.com/article/A...104/3040331/10
(was she died "at home" just easier to say?)

(Honestly we do teach the English language here - so headline baffles me!)

Another story:
http://www.wcpo.com/news/local/story...uYctR7lPA.cspx

If the death is not foul play, no hypothermia, not suicide, not of natural causes or known illness, then is all that is left: accidental (perhaps drugs or alcohol?) Seems to me this story is being hushed - I wonder if we will see that official autopsy report? I hope so, cause if someone harmed or played a part in harming this girl - they need to be held accountable. If she made a stupid teenager choice that led to her death - that is nothing to hide or be embarrassed of and can actually help other teens realize that they are not the superman and superwomen that their hormones are telling them they are. IMHO, etc....

I'm with you! And how can it be accidental, with no one else playing any part (even after death) when her pants were off, her coat was nearby, and there were footprints?

Exactly!!!!!!!!!! If they said hypothermia was part of it, that would explain the coat and pants but the footprints?????? If they are the footprints of the person who found the body - they would tell us that. Seems there has been a great effort in the local news to dis-spell foul play, but no supporting facts. What is wrong with the truth? Time will tell if we will get it or not.

It sounds like the police suspect a drug overdose. She could have wandered out without parts of her clothing if she was under the influence and didn't know what she was doing. Or, perhaps she died while partying and her friends thought they'd dump the body so they wouldn't get caught doing drugs. I just finished reading Medical Examiner Dr. Michael Baden's book, Unnatural Death. There is a scenario very similar to this one in the book where a girl died from drug overdose, but was found out in a field partially clothed. It looked like a homicide because of where she was and how she was dressed, but it wasn't. He said that police call this "dumping" and it is fairly common. People at the drug party don't want to call the police about the dead body, so they dump the body to avoid getting in trouble for the drugs. I'm guessing the police are suspecting something like this.
