Tik Tok Star Pleads Not Guilty to Killing Wife, Her Friend in Downtown San Diego High-Rise

Ana was in the process of ending the marriage, Brast told NBC 7, and asked Ali to leave the apartment on Oct. 18. He began stalking her, prosecutors say, and on Thursday morning, Ali vandalized the home in the Spire San Diego building in the East Village and also installed an app on his daughter’s iPad that allowed him to monitor activity in the apartment, according to prosecutors.

On Thursday's afternoon, Ali heard his wife with another man, Brast said, then he returned to the Spire with loaded gun and shot Barron three times — in the neck, cheek and back of the head at close range — and also fired one bullet into his wife’s forehead.

A Month After Shoving Incident, Popular TikTok User Murdered His Estranged Wife and Her Friend: Prosecutor

"Fans of Ali Abulaban‘s popular TikTok account saw a man with a love of doing pop culture impressions—and who appeared to have a warm, collaborative relationship with his wife Ana Abulaban, 28, who sometimes made appearances in his videos. Prosecutors said, however, that he threw that all away."

<snip>

"Deputy District Attorney Taren Brast of the San Diego District Attorney’s Office described increasingly violent and possessive behavior by Ali Abulaban, who is known on TikTok and elsewhere as “JinnKid.” Ana Abulaban told police in September that her husband had pushed her, which caused minor injuries. She voiced plans to file a restraining order and asked defendant Abulaban to leave the apartment Oct. 18, the prosecutor said."

A neighbor's Nest camera captured Abulaban entering the apartment he once shared with his estranged wife, followed by the sound of six gunshots.

As it played in court, Abulaban bowed his head and cried.

Prosecutors said he walked in and immediately shot Ana and 29-year-old Rayburn Barron as they sat on a couch.

The video later records Abulaban yelling Ana's name, then showed him in the hallway on the phone with his mom, admitting to the murders.

While Deputy District Attorney Taren Brast argued Abulaban was regularly abusive and controlling toward his wife, Abulaban's defense attorney, Jodi Green, told jurors Ana was abusive in her own way, and Abulaban's mental health spiraled amid his fruitless attempts to keep her happy, which were exacerbated by his undiagnosed bipolar disorder and the scars of abuse he weathered from his childhood.

[...]

After multiple instances of domestic violence and seemingly endless accusations of infidelity, Ana sought to leave the marriage, Brast said. The final straw came about a month before the killings when Abulaban slept with another woman, Brast said, leading Ana to start seeing Barron.

[...]

After the shooting, Brast said, Abulaban took pictures of the bodies and sent them to his parents and a friend, and later confessed to his mother, "I just shot and killed Ana."

Green did not deny that Abulaban committed the killings but argued that the collapse of his relationship and his mental health took its toll on his psyche, causing him to react without thinking rationally.

Prosecution has rested their case, and Thursday morning (today 5/16/24) the Defense will start calling witnesses.

May 15, 2024 - Prosecutors began day seven of testimony in Ali Abulaban’s trial

The prosecution played several audio messages Ali had sent to Ana, many of which were vulgar and disturbing.

“I’m a *** god, I’m a sexy mother***, I’m a *** Internet celebrity,” he yelled into the phone, recorded on an audio message.

“I cant wait to divorce you so I can start my new life,” he said, while telling Ana he had met another woman.

As some of the messages were played out in court, Ali was seen laughing, while at other times, he was extremely uncomfortable and appeared to ask his attorneys to “turn off” the audio.

“You’re going to watch Netflix and think, oh, isn’t that my husband,” Ali was heard saying in one message.

The defense began their case Thursday morning, first calling a phlebotomist, who drew Ali Abulaban’s blood after he was arrested.

[...]

After court wrapped early for the day, Ali’s attorney, Jodi Green, petitioned the judge for a “PC 1118,”........ which would make this shooting manslaughter, not murder.

The prosecution refuted the claims. The judge denied Ali’s attorney’s request.

This motion is often seen in court, but rarely approved.

In court Thursday, it was revealed that six days before the shooting, Ali and Ana had planned to meet at the courthouse to file for divorce, but didn’t follow through with it. It’s the same courthouse Ali’s trial is being held.

The defense and prosecution continue to paint the end of their relationship in two different lights. The defense has claimed Ana and Ali were still amicable, going back and forth with each other, saying they still had love for one another. The prosecution, on the other hand, is claiming the relationship had been over and that Ana had already said she wanted a divorce and that they weren’t living together.

Ali’s family is expected to testify early next week.

Defense calls alleged double murder a 'crime of passion'

She describe Ali's childhood. She described how troubled the relationship became between Ana and Ali. Finally, she had to describe the phone call from Ali confessing he had just shot Ana and Ray. Day nine of the double murder trial for the former TikTok star Ali Abulaban included Ali’s mother on the stand, discussing Ali’s abusive childhood, Ali and Ana’s marriage and when Ali called her on Oct. 21, 2021 and confessed to shooting Ana just moments before that phone call.
[...]

Warra recalled that he went to college for one semester before joining the military.

She said she was “excited” for him to join, to be disciplined and “learn how to be a man.”

The deputy district attorney asked Warra
(Ali's Mother) about why Ali was discharged from the military. The designated disclosure authority said it was due to a domestic violence incident where he had hit Ana, but his mom did not recall that as the reason.

She said during a time when Ali, Ana and their daughter lived with them in Virginia, she would sometimes hear Ali and Ana fighting, but said it was nothing unusual and they just sounded like a “normal married couple.”

Warra said she recalls trying to stop Ana from getting a restraining order because it would impact Ali’s clearance for his job.

Oh, surprise. COURT TV is discussing the TikTok Star Murder Trial today May 21st. Expert saying his own actions documenting his crimes, as in sending message and photo to his Mother, and all the social media posts he made, now make it difficult for Defense to say that he didn't intend to kill, or know he what he did.

They're covering the trial for the next hour. Court TV today is in the courtroom. You can watch LIVE. I'm just turning in, another surprise, Ali Abulaban is testifying on his behalf, answering questions upon Direct.
