Blaze Bernstein’s parents say killing could be hate crime; suspect used gay slur
The OCR
By TONY SAAVEDRA | tsaavedra@scng.com and KELLY PUENTE | kpuente@scng.com | Orange County Register
PUBLISHED: January 16, 2018 at 5:44 pm | UPDATED: January 16, 2018 at 10:07 pm

Documents show the suspect, Samuel Lincoln Woodward, used a gay slur to describe their son while talking to Orange County Sheriff’s investigators.

In a 16-page search warrant affidavit obtained by the Orange County Register, Woodward told investigators that on the night he went missing, Jan. 2, Bernstein, 19, kissed Woodward on the lips as the men sat in a parked car outside a Hobby Lobby in Lake Forest.

Woodward, 20, of Newport Beach, told investigators he pushed Bernstein away and wanted to call him a “******,” according to the affidavit. Detectives noted that Woodward clenched his jaw and fists when telling them how he felt.

If prosecuted as a hate crime, Bernstein’s slaying could be punishable by life in prison without parole or the death penalty, legal sources said. Conversely, other options include lesser charges such as manslaughter. Woodward is expected to be charged and possibly arraigned on Wednesday.

Bernstein also wrote that another friend referred to Woodward as “closeted … and he was telling the truth for once.”

Ex-classmate accused of killing Blaze Bernstein boasted of religious faith, conservative views - MSN

By Hannah Fry

The 20-year-old Newport Beach man facing a murder charge in the fatal stabbing of former high school classmate Blaze Bernstein spoke openly on social media about his Catholic faith and conservative political views ....

He also expressed disdain for then-President Obama, calling him an “arrogant, hypocritical, spineless socialist,” and for the song “Same Love,” singer Macklemore’s anthem in support of same-sex marriage.

Orange County Dist. Atty. Tony Rackauckas said Wednesday that the case is still being investigated and that his office hasn’t ruled out the possibility that the killing was a hate crime.

In addition to the murder charge, Woodward is facing a possible sentencing enhancement on allegations of personal use of a knife in Bernstein’s slaying, according to Orange County Superior Court records. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 26 years to life in state prison.

Woodward and Bernstein met at the Orange County School of the Arts in Santa Ana, though it is unclear whether they were friends there.

California Murder Suspect Said to Have Trained With Extremist Hate Group

by A.C. Thompson, ProPublica, Ali Winston, special to ProPublica, and Jake Hanrahan, special to ProPublica Jan. 26, 7:46 p.m. EST

The California man accused of killing a 19-year-old University of Pennsylvania student earlier this month is an avowed neo-Nazi and a member of one of the most notorious extremist groups in the country, according to three people with knowledge of the man’s recent activities.

Now, three people with detailed knowledge of Woodward’s recent past have been able to shed more light on the young man’s extremist activities. They said Woodward was a member of the Atomwaffen Division, an armed Fascist group with the ultimate aim of overthrowing the U.S. government through the use of terrorism and guerrilla warfare.

Woodward joined the organization in early 2016 and later traveled to Texas to attend Atomwaffen meetings and a three-day training camp, which involved instruction in firearms, hand-to-hand combat, camping and survival skills, the former member said. ProPublica has obtained photographs of Woodward at an outdoor Atomwaffen meeting in the scrubby Texas countryside. One of the photos depicts Woodward and other members making straight-armed Nazi salutes while wearing skull masks. In other pictures, Woodward is unmasked and easily identifiable.

Social media posts and chat logs shared by Woodward’s friends show that he openly described himself as a “National Socialist” or Nazi. He “was as anti-Semitic as you can get,” according to one acquaintance.

Suspects in five killings reportedly linked to macabre neo-Nazi group - The Washington Post
By Kyle Swenson January 29 at 5:29 AM

On Friday, ProPublica published a piece linking Woodward to Atomwaffen Division, a relatively new Charles Manson-obsessed neo-Nazi outfit that defines itself as a “revolutionary national socialist organization centered around political activism and the practice of an autonomous fascist lifestyle.”

Quoting three sources with knowledge of Woodward’s recent past, the investigative news site reported Woodward joined the hate group in 2016 and attended a three-day training camp with other members in Texas. Pictures from the event captured Atomwaffen Division members in skull masks, making Nazi salutes. The website reported that the training included lessons in firearms and hand-to-hand combat, preparation for the group’s “ultimate aim of overthrowing the U.S. government through the use of terrorism and guerrilla warfare.”

According to the Anti-Defamation League, Atomwaffen — German for “atomic weapon” — cells have been “reported in multiple states, including Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Texas, Massachusetts, Washington and Wisconsin.” The group’s “vile propaganda often promotes violence against minority communities, including LGBT people, Jews, Muslims, and African Americans.”

A video on what appears to be a YouTube channel affiliated with the group captures footage from a “Doomsday Hatecamp,” including images of members burning the U.S. Constitution, hiking the woods and pouring drinks out “for the martyrs now and the martyrs yet to come.”

“Atomwaffen members have a macabre fascination with serial killer Charles Manson and his vision of a race war between whites and blacks,” the Anti-Defamation League reported. “For this reason, in 2017 . . . Atomwaffen members sought out neo-Nazi Manson devotee and former American Nazi Party member, James Mason, and republished some of his writing, including Siege, a book based on a collection of newsletters Mason wrote in the 1980s.”

Blaze Bernstein slaying suspect faces hate crime sentencing enhancement | LA Times
By HANNAH FRY
AUG 02, 2018 | 1:35 PM

A 21-year-old Newport Beach man charged with murder in the stabbing death of former high school classmate Blaze Bernstein will also face a hate crime sentencing enhancement, the Orange County district attorney announced Thursday.
Orange County District Atty. Tony Rackauckas said prosecutors added the hate crime enhancement based on allegations that Samuel Woodward killed 19-year-old Bernstein because Bernstein was gay.
“A hate crime enhancement based on sexual orientation is appropriate due to the evidence developed by looking at Woodward’s cellphone, laptop and social media,” Rackauckas said. “All of this revealed the dark side of Woodward’s thoughts and intentions.”

The sentencing enhancement means that if Woodward is convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of life in state prison without parole. Before Thursday’s announcement, the maximum he could have spent behind bars was 26 years to life, according to prosecutors.
