''Mar 5, 2024
The two people fatally struck by a UP Express train Monday evening were a 16-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl, Toronto police confirmed Tuesday, though it's still not clear why they were on the tracks. "That's part of the investigation and we won't be speaking to that at all at this point," Insp. Keri Fernandes told reporters in an update Tuesday morning.''

How absolutely tragic. Could they have been walking on or crossing the tracks and just failed to see or hear the incoming train? Or possibly misjudged being able to cross? In any case, an accident. My heart goes out to their families.

''Toronto police are urging people to be careful around railway tracks after a teenage boy and a teenage girl were fatally struck by an UP Express train on Monday.

Police were called to the the area of Eglinton Avenue W. and Weston Road around 10:05 p.m. on Monday, after receiving reports of someone struck by a train.''

"These incidents are traumatic for both the families of the victims and the persons involved in the train," said Sgt. Keri Fernandes, adding that police cannot say why the pair were on the tracks but that is part of the investigation.
She said roughly 200 people were on the train at the time of the incident.
"We also want them to be mindful of their own health and if they're experiencing anything that they need assistance with, to reach out to Toronto victim services and make use of their counselling," Fernandes said.''

''Gallagher said the location where the collision occurred was in between stations. According to UP Express, the UP train west of Bloor GO was involved in the collision. Shuttles buses were running as a result.
Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact them''.

The Star found several easily accessible routes up to the train tracks near where Vivienne Norman was killed, including a section with no fence at all.

Vivienne and her boyfriend died on March 4 after being struck by a UP Express train while out for a walk in what Metrolinx has described as a case of “misadventure.” Her family is now pleading for the transit agency to upgrade barricades in the area around Weston Road and Black Creek Drive, where neighbourhood teens frequently trek the muddy trails that lead up overpasses to concealed hangout spots, using one among several easily accessible routes seen by the Star in recent days''.

''The pair relayed to the Star details of a security video the police and coroner’s office described to them. They said they were told Vivienne and her boyfriend were walking on eastbound tracks when they appeared to move onto the westbound tracks to avoid an approaching train, but another train was fast approaching on the westbound tracks. The family says the two teens appeared to never see it before they were struck.''

Grief is grief, but I think I would find an accident easier to process than a suicide pact, were they my kids. A short life, but hopefully not an unhappy one. Sounds like her partner who also died treated her wonderfully.

Sleep well, Vivienne.
