On the 7th of February 2024 the danish police arrested a 53 year old man living in northern Jutland for the murder of 23 year old Hanne With in 1990.

He was identified as a suspect by the police in late 2023, when a DNA profile extracted from forensic evidence from the crime scene was familiarly compared to the Danish DNA Register of Offenders.

The DNA profile of the suspect was identified as having enough similarities to a DNA sample in the data base to reflect a parent-child relationship to the offender in the data base. A swab taken from the 53 year old suspect confirmed his DNA was a high probability match to multiple DNA samples extracted from the crime scene, including Hanne With's pants and a cable used to tie her.

Long version:

Hanne With spent the 31st of December 1989 at home with her boyfriend getting over a hangover. Around 8pm she and her boyfriend decided to go into the center of Copenhagen to celebrate New Years and get some drugs. Hanne With had substance abuse disorder and used prostitution as a way to pay for drugs. Her boyfriend knew about her plan and therefore they parted ways agreeing to meet up later at the central station to celebrate new years together. When it was 00:30 and Hanne With had not showed up to meet him, he decided to go back to their apartment on Fensmarkgade on Nørrebro.

The sight that met him as he entered her apartment was a horrific one. As he opened the door he saw blood was covering a large area of the apartment - the walls, floors and of course, his girlfriend Hanne With. She was lying face down on her bed covered in blood and with a cord tied around her. Her boyfriend ran over to her and held up her head, realising that she was gone. He called the police.

The police arrived and secured the crime scene, including acquiring many items of forensic evidence including the pants Hanne With was wearing, the cord used to strangle/tie her and multiple tools the police assumed had been used to torture her. There was no obvious signs of sexual assault. The boyfriend was quickly ruled out as a suspect as he had an alibi being out in the city, and his clothes did not show evidence of blood spatter that would have been there had he been the one to brutally kill Hanne With.

Two days after the murder a witness came forward - a taxi driver told police that on the night of 1990 he picked up a customer in central copenhagen who expressed to him the wish to use the services of a prostitute. The taxi driver noted that the man was between 25-35 years old, around 190 cm tall with a muscular build and had a jutlandish accent. The taxi driver drove the young man to Istegade on Vesterbro which is the "red light district" of Copenhagen. He watched as the man opened the car din wow and talked to a young woman on the street, hearing that they agreed on a price of 400 kr for her services. The young woman then got into the car andgave him the address of Fensmarkgade on Nørrebro. Based on his description of the woman, police is quite sure this was Hanne With with a customer, and later her killer.

A second witness, also a taxi driver, came forward a few days after the first witness. He described picking up a young man with a very similar description to the first witness's around 11:30 pm close to Fensmarkgade. He noticed that the young man seemed nervous, anxious and confused. He asked the taxi driver to take him to Valby station and asked if 50 kr was enough payment for the trip. The driver knew Valby St was quite far away, and noted that the young man must be from out of town and unfamiliar with Copenhagen. After agreeing on the correct price he dropped the young man off at Valby St, again noting that he seemed to constantly ask questions without paying attention to the answers.

Police was sure that the killer was Hanne With's customer that night. What happened after the taxi driver dropped them off earlier in the evening is unknown but the police have put forward the following theory:

Hanne With and the customer enter her apartment, and she demands that the young man pays the 400 kr up front. He does so, perhaps reluctantly and complaining about the price. After this it is possible there was an argument that escalated to the extremely violent and brutal overkilling of Hanne With. She was both stabbed, hit and stranggled. It is unknown whether the killer and Hanne With had sexual intercourse before her death.

It is fair to say that the Copenhagen Police were at a loss as to who the killer could be. Since they presumed he was visiting Copenhagen from another part of the country and did not know Hanne With before that night, the investigation was very difficult and it quickly became a cold case. However a year after the murder the police received an unexpected tip. An anonymous caller told police he knew the man who killed Hanne With, as he attended Roskilde Slagteriskole (Butcher School) with him and gave police the area in Jutland where the man currently lived. It is not clear why the person wanted to be anonymous and what the police did with this tip, however it did not lead to a break in the case.

As forensic science evolved the forensic evidence in the Hanne With case was reexamined, specifically the pants she was wearing that night. A stain on the pants was able to yield a DNA profile, however when compared directly to the police data base it did not lead to a match. In Denmark your DNA is only taken if you are accused or sentenced for a crime which gives a minimum of 1.5 years in prison, and is kept for 10 years after the sample is taken. Currently the central DNA register in Denmark has around 140,000 profiles registered and it is currently not legal for danish police to reference private DNA data bases such as Ancestry.com and 24andme due to data protection laws.

In 2022 it was clarified in the danish parliament that danish law permits the partial comparison of a suspect's DNA to the DNA register, meaning that familial searches can be made. In late 2023 the DNA profile from Hanne With's pants was finally compared to the DNA register.... and there was a familial match. The match showed there was a parent-child relationship between the suspect and a young man that had been convicted of a minor crime in 2019 where his DNA had been taken.

On the 7th of February 2024 based on this new evidence the police arrested a 53 year old man living in northern Jutland. He would have been 20 years old at the time of the crime and was in Copenhagen doing his military service in the marines. He was presented to a judge within 24 hours of arrest. A swab taken from the 53 year old suspect confirmed his DNA was a high probability match to multiple DNA samples extracted from the crime scene, including Hanne With's pants and a cable used to tie her.It was reported that he gave multiple voluntary interviews to police and that he denies knowing Hanne With or ever interacting with her. The judge ruled that there was a very large amount of evidence pointing to his guilt and he is currently held in jail for the next 27 days while the police continues their investigation.

The police are still looking for the caller from 1991 and encourage that person to come forward.

Hanne With is by far not the only young woman brutally killed in Copenhagen in the 1990s. In fact there are currently 14 cold cases on the desk of Copenhagen police waiting to be solved.
