Details of Disappearance
Olsen was last seen between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. on June 24, 2000 at her family's residence on Fletcher Farm Road in Franklin, New York. She has never been heard from again.

Olsen's family members told authorities that she always took her dog, Katie, for walks in her neighborhood. Katie was discovered inside the residence after Olsen disappearance. Her loved ones believe that Olsen may have vanished after retrieving the mail or visiting a neighbor, as she never brought Katie along for short excursions.

Authorities believe Olsen may have attempted to return to her previous residence in Wethersfield, Connecticut. Her daughter said that Olsen's first great-grandchild was born prior to her disappearance. Olsen was anxious to see the infant and her daughter planned to bring the baby to Olsen's New York residence in early July 2000. It is possible that Olsen attempted to travel to her grandchild's Connecticut home to see the newborn, but she never arrived. Authorities also speculated that she may have traveled to the Adirondack region of New York for the Fourth Of July celebrations, as many of her neighbors frequented the area at the time. Olsen was never spotted during the festivities. Her case remains unsolved.

Search continues for elderly Adirondacks woman who disappeared in 2000

It took Harriet T. Olsen an hour to disappear.

She had dinner with her husband on a summer night in 2000 inside the couple's Franklin County home in the Adirondacks, said the New York State Police. Her husband, Henry Olsen, headed outside after dinner and spent less than an hour in his garage, troopers said.

When he returned to his home, his wife was gone.

Harriet Olsen, then 75, disappeared from her Bloomingdale home in June 2000. More than 16 years later, she remains missing.

Troopers, forest rangers and environmental conservation police spent two weeks searching for Harriet Olsen.

"The search failed to locate Harriet T. Olsen or provide any substantial leads," troopers said.

Still searching for Harriet Olsen

State police last week issued a press release saying they are still investigating the mysterious disappearance of a 75-year-old woman from her home near Bloomingdale in June 2000. It’s a sad and puzzling case, one that has haunted our minds ever since we reported on it 16-and-a-half years ago.

Disappearances are a hallmark of the Adirondacks. With vast tracts of backcountry and sparse population, the Park has numerous unsolved missing persons cases going back decades. Tupper Lakers still hope to hear word of Colin Gillis, and Saranac Lakers feel similarly about Wesley Wamsganz. Searches for each of those young men produced a couple of clues, but Mrs. Olsen truly vanished without a trace.

Capt. LaFountain repeated something he had insisted to us 16-and-a-half years ago: Investigators do not suspect foul play. Rather, they think she wandered off and got lost. Regrowth from 1998 ice storm tree damage made the underbrush in those woods particularly thick.

“We just want to make sure she’s not forgotten,” Capt. LaFountain said when asked about the main intention behind last week’s announcement. Also, he said, “In case (people) see something when they’re out walking through the woods or out cross-country skiing or whatever … if they see something that’s unusual, that they just don’t dismiss it, that they call us.”

So if in the last 16-and-a-half years you have seen unexplained articles of clothing or any other potential trace of Harriet Olsen around Fletcher Farm Road, please call state police Troop B in Ray Brook at 518-897-2000 and ask for the Bureau of Criminal Investigation. She was last seen wearing a blue shirt, green corduroy shorts and glasses.

You never know; your information might be the first clue in this unsolved mystery.
