Oscar Pistorius: South Africa gears up for its 'trial of the century'

(CNN) -- He was one of South Africa's favorite sons, an amputee track star who defied all the odds and sprinted into the hearts of millions during the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. She was a staggering beauty with the brains to match, a law graduate and model whose star was on the rise.

Admin/Mod Note

Thank you all for participating! This forum has a special dynamic - good sleuthers, intelligent discussions, though provoking opinions expressed ... it makes it enjoyable to read & moderate. We sincerely thank you for that!

The last few days I've been disappointed to see a few exchanges begin to deteriorate  - escalating from a lack of tolerance for differing opinions. Of course opinions are going to differ when a bunch of intelligent, independent thinkers have a discussion. That's a good thing, not a bad thing. I understand the passion but the purpose should not be to change anyone else's mind. Respect your fellow posters and make a conscious effort to be tolerant. Please note that passive-aggressive, snarky, personalized posts will not be tolerated and, beginning immediately, will result in a loss of posting privileges.

Thanks all. :heartbeat:

anagrammy wrote, about 3 hours ago (partial quote): "Actually, there is another possibly more significant inference to be made by establishing that Oscar was crying loudly two hours before the shooting." Who has said Oscar was crying two hours before the shooting? That would be in the 1 am timeframe. No one has testified to anything like that.

Actually, there is another possibly more significant inference to be made by establishing that Oscar was crying loudly two hours before the shooting. It makes it more likely that Reeva was theatening to break up with him rather than vice versa. It sets the scene for him locking her in the bedroom/bathroom and at some point releasing her and screaming, "Get out of my house" in an attempt to create for himself the ego-saving scenario that he broke it off and threw her out. He punctuates this by throwing her jeans out the window.

In his attempt to keep her from leaving, I believe he struck her and then I believe she had the poor judgment to tell this nutcase that she was going to report what he had done to the police, never realizing that to OP his brand is worth more than her life.

Could have been, but then Reeva perhaps had enough time to call for help with her phone, but did not. If she did the call with his phone (5) and the call has been deleted during the time the phone was "lost", then the evidence is missing.

BIB Even if a phone call record was somehow deleted from the iphone, the call will still appear on call records from the phone company.

TY . I thought that was how this 'new fangled' technology worked, but wasn't sure. :D

I hope the assessor is fit and well and ready to go.

It should be an interesting few days ahead :)

O/T I just heard on BBC radio news that Shrien Dewani is to be put on a plane from England to South Africa later today, to stand trial for arranging the murder of his girlfriend there. He'll make a brief court appearance when he arrives.

But what did OP do upstairs? His hands were bloody when he ran upstairs so... His phone, yes. The watch box and duvet, yes. He may have stopped and figured that he was screwing up and went to wash his hands. And then?

OP left the bedroom a mess. He was focused on what was important to him, most likely IMO his electronic devices. Your thoughts...

Absolutely. Whatever he did, it was very important and it may well have been successfully enough done to allow him to roll with the intruder narrative. I suspect it was to dispose of/collect his tshirt, collect phone to give to family and perhaps open the window, put air rifle and baseball bat in 'recently unused' position. Just speculation but one or all of the above might be true.

But I think it is more likely to be something else we don't know about that he DID manage to cover up / change. It could well have been the "smoking gun" that would have nailed him completely in which case he at least gave himself breathing space and the time to develop the narrative. At this point, that breathing space is 1 year, 1 month, 2 weeks and counting.

I also think that he had started to prepare for the intruder story in a period before the shots and the arrival of Stander and Stipp. This disappearance upstairs was an essential development of that initial post-murder planning and is absolutely crucial in terms of understanding the actual events and potentially OP's x-exam but I fear we will never know, unless OP and the Standers are fully honest which is highly unlikely obviously.

The birds are twittering really loud outside court today. Better than the sound of all that traffic....

Off to work now just as things are about to start!

I'm relying on you fellow sleuthers to give a running commentary so I can catch up when I get back.
Thank you

My dog's barking his head off at those chirping birds on the livestream now.....

 .. actually I've got a bowl of weetabix, but same difference ..!
