Seven months after someone shot Florida State law professor Dan Markel in the garage of his Betton Hills home, the Tallahassee Police Department has yet to make an arrest or identify a suspect. It's frustrating to those who knew the 41-year-old father of two. His friends and neighbors worry that the trail has gone cold. But police say they are still working the case. Markel's former colleague, Mark Spottswood, is one of those who is frustrated....

Investigators still believe Markel was the "intended target" of whoever killed him, said TPD spokesman Officer David Northway.

Yep, Dan Markel's killer still not caught. Still wondering how the killer knew Dan would be home at that time, given I don't believe Dan was followed. Maybe the killer used one of these (and the story comes from Tallahassee):

I've also hypothesized Dan might've used an app like Waze. Somebody could've tracked his progress that way as well.

Someone could have waited near the daycare and watched him drop off kids and followed, or other people could have known when he was taking the kids to daycare and followed him after that.

Markel was shot July 18, a sunny Friday morning. The neighbor who called 911 reported hearing a loud bang next door and went to Markel's house at 2116 Trescott Drive. He found the law professor bleeding, unable to speak, but moving. The driver's side window, according to the Tallahassee Fire Department dispatch log, was "bashed" out.

So the window was probably shot out. Whomever did the murder just went right up and shot him through the window. Dan didn't have the window down to talk, no one heard arguements that day.

Thanks for the welcome dotr. I have been following the case since its inception. I went to law school with Dan and knew him professionally after law school. It is such a tragic case and so distressing to see that the case has seemingly gone cold.

From the link, this bit was disconcerting as it could be absolutely, anyone from anywhere.
What if one of those people had a crazed partner or family member, a completely unknown enemy, who targeted Dan out of mistaken jealousy?
random speculation, imo.

Markel wrote: 'Is anyone else getting pestered just in the last week or so by obviously ridiculous or malevolent friend requests on fb from people with sham profiles all over the world w no possible connection to you?

'It feels like an onslaught of the Facebook equivalent of Cialis and Nigerian prince scams.'

One friend jokingly replied, 'It might just be all your friends creating alter egos on Ambien.?'

Other friends soon put his mind at rest when they too said they had received the requests. One female friend wrote that she had received four such requests"

That was a good article. I don't think those FB friend requests had anything to do with the murder. His friends had gotten them too and I actually had a bunch of those around the same time. Some scammers had taken over people's FB pictures then sent friend requests out to all your friends and so on... one big group of attenpted scams going on at that time.

I think the murderer is close to home. I just home LE gets all the facts together and has the evidence to bring someone to justice.
 
So, Dan Markel's ex wife got her wish, and she moved back to south FL??? :gasp:
 
What are the main theories by WSers and is there any solid evidence in this case?

It seriously appears to be a professional hit to me, but maybe that's because three gunman only fired a single bullet into his head.

But I suppose a hitman wouldn't have done it in broad daylight, left him alive and left his phone.

There is no evidence really known except the car. We know of no POI by LE, so we really can not say our theory here.....
 
The only theory we have talked about here, is the possibility it was a hit. IF it was a hit, it could take a very long time to solve. And if it was solved, it would be when someone involved opened their mouth. I can think of a few cases in recent history that involved a hit. LE had a good idea all along who was responsible, but it took a long time to build the case, and fit all the pieces together.

Someone may be thinking they have gotten away with this crime, but they should be looking behind their shoulder, because the truth will come out.
