So many children dying at the hands of a parent or other adults living in the home. I'm sure this little one has been taken into a place where there is no hunger and children are loved and not abused. Rest in peace little one.

Child abuse is suspected in the death of Makenzie Maison. She was found unresponsive Tuesday night by police at a home in the 800 block of Oak Street. She was taken to a hospital, but could not be resuscitated and was later pronounced dead.

Police Chief Michael Reaves said Makenzie's 25-year-old father and 27-year-old stepmother are in custody on child abuse charges.

"There is evidence of foul play present at the scene," said Reaves. "We are treating this as a homicide investigation."...

This is really close to me (within 30 miles) - so sad to hear, but glad the other children were removed and will hopefully be given a chance at a better life than their sister, may she rest in peace.

Yes, I saw that, but their names haven't been published anywhere that I can find.

I've checked WDIV, The Detroit News, and Port Huron Times Herald this morning, and the names of the two people in custody (dad, stepmom) have still not been released. They probably both have attorneys protecting their "rights"

Dad, stepmom charged in death of malnourished girl

Jeff Karoub, Associated Press 10:46 a.m. EDT May 29, 2015

Prosecutors have charged a father and stepmother with murder, torture and child abuse after their 5-year-old girl was found malnourished, dehydrated and abused in a Port Huron home.

St. Clair County Prosecutor Mike Wendling tells The Associated Press that the warrants were signed Friday morning for 25-year-old Andrew Maison and 27-year-old Hilery Maison. They were arrested after police found Mackenzie Maison unresponsive Tuesday. She was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Bond was denied during an arraignment for Hilery Maison, who denied the charges and asked for an attorney. Andrew Maison’s arraignment was underway...

I've followed many cases, but none TOO closely - is it normal to have "torture" charges, along with the murder and child abuse charges? The "torture" charges really shocked me - how could other people not have noticed/known what was going on with these people?! How do they prove "torture" as opposed to "child abuse"?? What's the difference? Poor kids, I hope the surviving children find a good home and can overcome their traumatic beginnings.

Perhaps you're not familiar with this (Detroit) case in which dad/stepmom are currently facing a trial for charges of child abuse and torture: http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/...nts-charged-with-torture-child-abuse/31377832

Thanks, Bette - I have heard a bit Charlie's case - I think in that instance, wouldn't the "torture" part be because of how he was made to exercise for hours on end? I'm just wondering in this case, what would make them charge "torture" as well as "child abuse" ? Maybe it hasn't been mentioned in the news articles, I read malnourished and "signs of abuse", but haven't read much more as far as details on this case.

This is one of those cases where the accuseds' social media is so deceiving! They looked like a sweet little family, went on a recent camping trip that looked like a lot of fun. Really proves the point that you truly never know what is going on behind closed doors.

It appears stepmom is in the first trimester of another pregnancy, I wonder if that correlates with the abuse at all.

I hope the remaining children are being showered with love right now.

Deliberately withholding food/drink from children seems like torture to me. I'm not buying the grandfather's excuse that the little girls wouldn't eat. Children know when they're hungry! This 5-year-old girl and her 3-year-old sister were deliberately starved - one of them to death. Not being taken to a physician when you have pneumonia and/or a genital infection seems like torture to me, too. I suspect the deceased child didn't go to Kindergarten because school officials certainly would have noticed that this little girl was underweight, malnourished, probably coughing, wheezing, shivering from the pneumonia and uncomfortable sitting for long periods of time with a vaginal infection. Perhaps none of these things meets the legal definition of torture, but it sure seems like torture to me. :stormingmad:

Hundreds mourn Mackenzie Maison at vigil

Bob Gross, Times Herald 10:27 p.m. EDT May 29, 2015

A crowd numbering in the hundreds of people spilled across two lanes of Oak Street Friday evening in Port Huron to mourn a little girl most of them didn't know.

Some wept openly as they held lighted candles for Mackenzie Maison, the 5-year-old found dead Tuesday at 829 Oak St. in Port Huron. Others held their children, maybe just a little closer than usual, as they watched pink and blue balloons float into the sky.

Pink and blue were Mackenzie's favorite colors.

They grieved for her death and all the things little girls do and that Mackenzie never will experience — the first day of kindergarten, making chalk drawings on a sidewalk, acting in a school play...
