A counselor at the Jewish Community Center's day camp faces child *advertiser censored* charges after federal investigators said he was filming young boys in a locker room.

Matthew Kuppe, 21, has been arrested and charged with the production, the possession and the distribution of child *advertiser censored*.

A completely logical reason why, while at work, your phone does not need to be on your body, but accessible to you at lunch in the employee break room or in your car or an eatery. I never recall carrying a really long extension cord from home to work to make me available to everyone I know when working before cell phones. Now you can film and take pics of people and use them for everything. Scary.

Detroit — A former Jewish Community Center camp counselor posted locker room photos of naked 5-year-old campers on a Russian website and identified his alleged victims by their real names, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Fired counselor Matthew Kuppe, 21, of West Bloomfield Township, allegedly took the photos during a camp sleepover earlier this month. He posted photos of at least three children in an online folder titled “Jewish Boys” and used the pics as bait to convince Internet users to send him more child *advertiser censored*, a federal prosecutor said.

The evidence emerged during a lengthy hearing in federal court that ended with U.S. Magistrate Judge Elizabeth Stafford ordering Kuppe held without bond pending trial, arguing he is a danger to the community.

Camp failed to act on earlier complaint about counselor

Detroit — Jewish Community Center camp staff failed to act on a complaint that a counselor was involved in “inappropriate conduct” last summer — one year before the counselor allegedly filmed boys in a locker room.

A center spokesman said Thursday that an unspecified number of supervisors have been fired after new allegations surfaced against former camp counselor Matthew Kuppe.

“We are heartsick that this matter has occurred,” camp spokesman Michael Layne wrote in a statement Thursday.

Kuppe, 21, of West Bloomfield, appeared in federal court Thursday and was arraigned on a six-count child *advertiser censored* indictment. Kuppe stood mute and is being held without bond.

If convicted, he faces up to 30 years in prison...

Matthew David Kuppe, the 21-year-old Michigan State University and former Jewish Community Center camp counselor from West Bloomfield, appeared Thursday before federal Judge Mona Mayhew.

Kuppe was wearing an orange jail jumpsuit and orange Crocs shoes. He pleaded not guilty to six counts of production, possession, receipt and distribution of child *advertiser censored*.

Kuppe remains behind bars where he has been since his arrest two weeks ago. Meanwhile, the Jewish Community Center, where federal investigators say Kuppe took pictures of campers and sent them to a Russia-based child *advertiser censored* website, started firing camp employees. The firings were not just for missing this incident. Overall, three camp staff members were terminated...

Meanwhile, Kuppe's attorney is trying to get the federal judge to release him on bond while he awaits trial. He said Kuppe's parents work from their home and would supervise him under what amounts to house arrest. They claim he is not a flight risk.

The government wants Kuppe in jail because they want him away from electronics that have access to the Internet.

Detroit — Federal prosecutors said Thursday it was “extremely likely” that a former Jewish Community Center counselor had sexual contact with young campers.

The government made the claim in a 23-page brief arguing that ex-counselor Matthew Kuppe should not be freed on bond. It is unclear if any campers told prosecutors they were sexually assaulted at the camp.

The brief for the first time provided details about how Kuppe allegedly managed to take 16 sexually explicit photos of three young boys at the camp’s locker room and bathroom. The brief also explains how the counselor allegedly managed to return as a counselor this summer despite management being made aware in summer 2014 that Kuppe was “overly touchy” with boy campers.

“In 2014, when two counselors reported that (Kuppe) acted inappropriately around boys in the camp, the management did not find the complaints credible, and failed to act on them,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Sara Woodward wrote in the brief...

Ugh, ugh, ugh. I still cannot believe there were questions about his behavior with children LAST YEAR and nobody bothered to make sure higher management knew about this. They could have even called anonymously if they wanted to.

They cannot let him out---he lives near a school and I get the feeling he will take the opportunity to commit suicide if he could.

It's really unfortunate because JCC had an excellent reputation before this. I'm still not sure they've eradicated all the predators out of there, he had no reason to deal with the younger children but made sure he volunteered to be with them on sleepovers, to watch them for other staff - he didn't do this in a vacuum.

Keith Elementary School (Walled Lake Schools) is approximately 1/4 mile from the Kuppe home in West Bloomfield. The school playground is practically a bee-line from the Kuppe address :eek: No way should Matthew be allowed to stay in his parents' home instead of in the slammer!

I get the impression that MK has been mollycoddled by his parents all his life. His parents seem to be overly-protective and don't want their poor wittle boy to spend time in jail. Tough! They've probably been able to get him out of most scrapes throughout his life thus far, but it's time they opened their eyes to the fact that Matthew preys on young children. :moo:

A former Jewish Community Center counselor who is facing several federal child *advertiser censored* charges will not be prosecuted locally on allegations that he abused multiple children at a day camp in West Bloomfield.

West Bloomfield Police Chief Michael Patton told the Free Press he was notified Monday that the Oakland Prosecutor's Office has declined to press charges against 21-year-old Matthew Kuppe.

Patton said after several concerned parents and potential victims were interviewed by the CARE House in Oakland County, investigators could not find evidence of criminal wrongdoing, but they still submitted their findings to the prosecutor's office on Friday for review...

A federal judge has released a counselor at a Jewish day camp on bond pending his next hearing on child *advertiser censored* charges, despite a conclusion by a psychologist that he is at high risk of re-offending.

Matthew Kuppe, 21, who is accused of filming prepubescent boys in a locker room in Oakland County, has been jailed since August.

U.S. District Judge Avern Cohn ordered Tuesday that Kuppe be freed until his next hearing, saying there was no evidence the former Jewish Community Center summer camp counselor was a flight risk.

Under the conditions of his release, Cohn ordered Kuppe to wear a GPS tether, agree not to view *advertiser censored*, have no contact with the victims and refrain from using computers or the Internet. He also may not possess a credit card and must stay within the east side of the state...

How on earth I missed this I'll never know, but I cannot believe this person is out of jail!!! "Refrain" from using computers or the internet? "REFRAIN" - what odd language. How about the word PROHIBIT. How about forcing the parents to remove all computers and internet access from the home.

He must stay within the "east side of the state". All very odd to me and I don't like any of it. I hope the neighbors are well aware he is at home.
 
Schools are closed for Thanksgiving recess until Monday, but Matthew lives very close to an elementary school. I hope principal, teachers, staff, and parents are all aware that the Kuppe is out of jail and that they remain vigilant as children walk to/from school, during outdoor recess, etc. Matthew should not have access to children. Shame on the Judge for letting MK out until his next hearing :stormingmad:

A local group of parents whose children appeared in nude photos on the Internet is lashing out at a federal judge who released the *advertiser censored* suspect on bond, saying the judge sympathized more with a child *advertiser censored* suspect than their kids and “diminished the profoundness of his crimes.”

“It’s sad to believe that an esteemed judge could draw this disturbing conclusion, and sympathize with the defendant and his family … inconsiderate of the turmoil of the victims in this case and their families,” read a statement issued late Tuesday by the alleged victims' parents...
