Mali - Twenty killed in Radisson Blu Hotel attack, Bamako, 20 Nov 2015

Good morning all

So all those who have been following this Mali disaster - is this Al Qaeda , as opposed to ISIS?

Good question and going from memory had links to Al-Qaeda 2 yr's ago or so. They were a smaller group at the time but quite a distance from Paris and closer to Nigeria and Boko Harem which at one point announced affiliation with isis but was separate from Boko Harem.

Seems to me these groups compete against one another for top dog of the horror shows and it won't surprise me if we don't get a city or school kidnapped by Boko Harem who likes kidnapping girls and tycoons. (There's money in kidnapping execs and holding them ransom.)

Some info on this group currently.

The identity of the Bamako gunmen, or the group to which they belong, is not known.

Northern Mali was occupied by Islamist fighters, some with links to al Qaeda, for most of 2012. They were driven out by a French-led military operation, but sporadic violence has continued in Mali's central belt on the southern reaches of the Sahara, and in Bamako.

A Turkish diplomatic source earlier told Anadolu Agency that six Turkish Airlines crew were among the hostages. The Turkish Airlines later said that five out of the six were safely released.

Chinese diplomatic sources in Mali also told Anadolu Agency that at least seven Chinese nationals were among the hostages.

According to eye-witnesses, hostage takers arrived at the hotel in a stolen car with diplomatic number plates. The gunmen opened fire immediately, killing the guards and injuring several other people.

RSBM

Yes Peliman, seems to me most likely considering the diverse terrorist groups in the area and their allegiances. Very, very dangerous place.

Thankful that there are fewer attackers than previously feared and that there are combined special forces from so many countries there to help thwart them - no French personnel.

Let's hope they get the other half of the hostages out speedily.

Mali gov't says around ten 10 gunman attackers

Army: 3 confirmed dead in attack on Mali hotel in capital
By HAROUNA TRAORE AND BABA AHMED AP

Nov. 20, 2015 7:27 AM EST

The Brussels-based Rezidor Hotel group that operates the hotel said the assailants had "locked in" 140 guests and 30 employees...

Malian special forces were freeing hostages "floor by floor," Malian army commander Modibo Nama Traore told The Associated Press. At least 30 had been freed and Malian security forces were trying to make contact with the assailants, he said...

Traore said at least one guest earlier reported that the attackers instructed him to recite verses from the Quran before he was allowed to leave the hotel...

French President Francois Hollande said: "We should yet again stand firm and show our solidarity with a friendly country, Mali."

... were escorted out by security forces as the gunmen rushed "toward the fifth or sixth floor."

This seems so sad to me, especially on the day of the climate conference, as this continent is so effected by climate change. And on a side note, there was a case of Ebola reported, this morning in MSM.

Kassim Traoré, a Malian journalist was in a building about 150 feet from the Radisson, told the New York Times that the gunmen asked hostages to recite a Muslim declaration of faith called the shahada. Those who could were allowed to leave the hotel.

French troops have been stationed in Mali since 2013 to help Mali fight insurgents in the northern part of the country.

(CNN)LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

• [7:20 a.m. ET] Security forces have begun a counter-assault on the hotel in Mali's capital, said French President Francois Hollande, who said he'd been in touch with Malian authorities dealing with the hostage situation, including Mali President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta. Hollande, speaking to reporters in Paris, pledged to provide "necessary support" to help Mali resolve the situation.

• [7:18 a.m. ET] Twelve Air France crew members who were staying in the hotel are in a "safe place," the airline tweeted Friday. Air France has canceled all its flights Friday to and from Bamako as a precaution, the airline said.

• [7:14 a.m. ET] Vikas Swarup, a spokesman for India's Ministry of External Affairs, said 20 Indian nationals were staying in the hotel.

• [7 a.m. ET] At least 80 of roughly 170 hostages have been freed from the Radisson Blu Hotel in Mali's capital, Bamako, the country's state broadcaster, ORTM, said Friday.

Links between recent threats by Ansar Dine are being made in - who have suspected close links to AQ.

Threats to French interests ( French press reports) there and abroad hence Gendarmerie Nationale specialists being flown over- show of strength and defiance.

It must be incredibly frustrating as an islamic terrorist not to have your views and motives taken seriously by the societies you terrorize, even after you have exlicitly and repeatedly stated them.

BIB Yes the "mastermind's" brother was arrested after he disembarked from a flight in Agadir a MONTH ago, so if he knew anything about his brother's murderous plot he certainly wasn't saying?

One of the witnesses is reported to have heard an attacker speaking English which would rule out some of the native speaking groups
[that could means a foreigner who doesn't speak the local languages using english to communicate with others]

Premium hotel in Bamako

ACI2000??? district, business, gov't relatively well guarded may indicate some form of sophistication. The ability to surgically take that many people means some level of sophistication.

Kassim Traoré, a Malian journalist who was in a building about 50 meters, or 160 feet, from the Radisson, said the attackers told hostages to recite a declaration of Muslim faith as a way separating Muslims from non-Muslims.

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/11/21/world/africa/mali-hotel-attack-radisson.html

Those who could recite the declaration, the Shahada, were allowed to leave the hotel. The Shabab, a Qaeda affiliate in East Africa, used a similar approach in the attack at the Westgate Mall in Nairobi in 2013.

Malian army commander Modibo Nama Traore said at least 10 gunmen stormed the Radisson Blu hotel in Bamako shouting “Allahu Akbar” — “God is great” in Arabic — then fired on guards and began rounding up hostages.
