Toronto police released new composite sketch and announced a larger award in a 1980 homicide that left one man dead and another wounded.

Larry Roberts, 29, and a colleague both worked for Brink’s Canada and were delivering a “substantial” sum of money to the Toronto-Dominion Bank at the Agincourt Mall, in the Sheppard Avenue East and Kennedy Road area, when they were ambushed by three-armed men.

Roberts was fatally shot in the chest and the other man was wounded. The three suspects than fled the scene in light green a stolen car.

The second man shot, walked into the Toronto-Dominion bank where he was assisted by members of the public. Roberts lay unconscious where he had been shot.

Toronto police believed at the time the stolen car used in the robbery was from the Montreal area.

Police say their investigation into this cold case continues and involves connections with Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Quebec.

“Over time and sometimes of great deal of time, peoples’ attitudes change, relationships change, and people may have a nagging whisper in their ears about doing the right things,” Insp. Peter Moreira said at a conference Friday morning."

"Police have released an aged composite sketch of one of the suspects and now say they believe a woman was also involved in the incident, after police allege they found a woman’s DNA profile.

“With the advancements in technology in the areas of DNA and finger printing, we can sometimes see what investigators could not see at the time of the initial investigation,” Moreira said.

The suspects took off with $178,000 in a stolen car that was later found. Authorities say the case has connections to Ontario, Alberta and Quebec."

It would take someone very cold-hearted, imo. to just blast a 29 year old guy in the chest.

"Police believe the suspects committed similar crimes either before or after Roberts's murder.

"The suspects in this case were sophisticated and knew what they were doing," Vruna said, pointing to the fact that they were at the plaza at the time of the Brinks delivery. This suggests they had "done some research," she said, and were familiar with the timing of deliveries to the bank branch.

The suspects are believed to have ties to Ontario, Quebec and Saskatchewan, Vruna said. Two cars related to the case that were recovered by investigators in 1980 had been stolen from the Montreal area, while licence plates on the cars had been stolen from the Ottawa area, she said.

Evidence gathered at the crime scene 35 years ago has allowed investigators to develop DNA profiles of the gunmen, as well as of a woman who police believe was an accomplice, she said.

Investigators are also combing through files in similar cases across Canada and in the United States where arrests have been made in the hopes of identifying some or all of the suspects, Vruna said.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Det. Mary Vruna at 416-808-7409 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS".

This hard-working young man was trying to support his disabled toddler on $ 5.57 an hour...

"The daylight murder of Brink’s guard Larry Roberts inside the Agincourt Mall in Scarborough was “senseless . . . cold-blooded . . . brutal . . . savage . . . professional” and “well-planned,” in the words of Toronto police.

Roberts, 29, an ambulance driver/attendant, was moonlighting as a guard for $5.57 an hour to help support his disabled toddler.

He and his fellow guard Theodore (Ted) Montgomery, 51, who was wounded, never stood a chance at 1.23 pm on April 24, 1980 when they were ambushed inside the bustling mall at Sheppard Ave. E. at Kennedy Rd. in front of horrified shoppers, police said."

“There isn’t a statute of limitations on the offence of murder,” Det. Mary Vruna of the homicide squad said on Friday, as police offered a $50,000 reward for anyone helping them crack the cold case.

Vruna said that Roberts’ widow and son are still alive.

“She still resides with her son,” Vruna said. “It (investigation) has stirred up some emotions . . . Although her husband has been lost, he has not been forgotten.
”

"The gang is believed to be linked to Montreal and Saskatchewan, and perhaps also committed similar crimes in the U.S., Vruna said."

I believe Larry Robert's niece posted in the Toronto Crimes Forum some time ago. Let's welcome her back with her thoughts.

Armoured truck robberies usually make a big splash due to their spectacular nature and vicious, needless violence.

Some police department somewhere must have a record of a similar unsolved, very violent armoured truck heist with suspects of similar descriptions, perhaps using the same weapons.

In 1981, Judith Clark apparently was involved with this violent Brinks robbery in N.Y...

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/15/magazine/judith-clarks-radical-transformation.html

"On Oct. 20, 1981, a band of militant zealots armed with automatic weapons tried to rob a Brink’s truck in a shopping mall in Nanuet in Rockland County, N.Y. Before it was over, two armored-car guards were shot and two police officers — one black and one white — were gunned down at a roadblock. The crime was one of the last spasms of ’60s-style, left-wing violence. To the militants, it was an “expropriation” for something they called the Republic of New Afrika, a place that existed mainly in their fevered dreams.

Judith Clark was one of four people arrested that day for armed robbery and murder. She was 31, a veteran of the white left who traveled the radical arc from student protest to the Weathermen to the fringes beyond. A new single mother, she kissed her infant daughter goodbye that morning, promising to be home soon.

No one ever accused Clark of holding or firing a gun that deadly afternoon. But she was there, a willing participant, at the wheel of a tan Honda getaway car"

Lengthy, article, lists all armoured truck robberies in Montreal since 1967.

"Montreal armoured truck robberies from the past"

http://montreal.ctvnews.ca/montreal-armoured-truck-robberies-from-the-past-1.1972073

" March 1981 $2.4 million was taken from an armoured truck which had been left unlocked when two employees went to lunch in Montreal. The armed thief forced the driver out and abandoned the truck in an alleyway. Three suspects were arrested and charged two years later.

Aug. 15, 1979 An armoured car guard was killed and another seriously injured on the ground floor of the CBC Montreal headquarters in Montreal. An Alliance Blinde Ltee guard was killed and another seriously injured as thieves absconded with the money from the CBC employees credit union. Thieves forced a taxi driver to help them speed off.

Feb. 24, 1976 Millions - between $2.7 million and $10 million - was taken from a Brink’s truck when a van carrying a .50-calibre anti-aircraft gun blocked the truck and forced the driver to open the doors outside a Royal Bank branch in Old Montreal. A Brink’s employee later confessed to be part of the plot.

Sept 12. 1973 Brinks’ security guard Claude Vienneau, 35, was shot and killed behind a bank in St. Laurent in an afternoon shootout. His partner Robert Brunelle, 35, was shot in the leg but survived. A 30-year-old man was arrested soon after and police sought four or five others who escaped with 10 sacks of cash. A small delivery van rammed the armoured car from behind as the guards were carrying money to it from the bank and a second vehicle pinned the truck from in front".

Bumping for Larry Roberts, a young guy with a family, who was just trying to do his job when he was blasted out of this life for money.

Police in Florida believe cold case heist killers are in Montreal

Brinks Guard Joseph Warner was gunned down 36 years ago in St. Petersburg
Joseph Warner, a 44-year-old Brinks armoured car driver and a father of five, was shot and killed during a robbery at a St. Petersburg shopping centre on Jan. 23, 1982.

For years the case languished and there were no leads. Last year, Brinks offered a $10,000 US reward for any information leading to an arrest, and St. Petersburg detectives took a fresh look at the case.

Det. Brian Bilbrey said new evidence has led them to believe the killers are in Montreal.
Bilbrey said detectives have uncovered new evidence over the last year. They used DNA testing — which wasn't available in 1982 — to identify possible associates of the suspects.

"We were able to talk with several people incarcerated that were part of a New England Irish gang. We developed leads from some of them about people from Montreal who had come down here and had ties to the area," Bilbrey said.
