OH - Pike County: 8 people from one family dead as police hunt for killer(s) #2

I honestly don't think the grow operation is significant. Dewine and Reader were emphatic about not showing their hand. They would not have answered the question about pot if it had much to do with this case, unless they knew the cat was already out of the bag and there was no use in denying it. I'm very eager to find out what information the search warrants contain when they are released, probably tomorrow.

Cat was out of the bag, released on the Twitter of a News station right before the conference started.

I'm not a pot grower, but isn't it a bit too early in the season for there to be any actual plants growing outside? Especially in Ohio?

Sounds like it's time to get the seedlings in the ground... 3-5 months to harvest:

http://www.how-to-marijuana.com/growing-marijuana-outdoors.html :)

"While growing Marijuana outdoors is easier in a warm and sunny climate, such surroundings are not absolutely necessary.

I have had great results in cold northern Germany, in my parents garden."

There are locals more active on the T place and some advice about checking surrounding counties and even possibly one of the dead from KY and previous arrests with indoor grow. It is hard to keep up with the actual victims since so many have the same name..

That article was VERY INTERESTING. 2012. What officers were looking for them? And were they ever found?

I haven't found any follow-up.

But this does, indeed, verify that there are cartels in the immediate area. Cartels don't like competition.

Given the article I posted about the cannabis cartels in southern Waverly (just north of Piketon), I'm inclined to believe this is a cartel issue.
Particularly interesting: "There were no arrests, but officers are looking for the people who abandoned the camps."

Indepth article that supports the cartel connection. Columbus is a major hub. I think it would take more that a pot deal to bring in the assassins. If so, it may have been a message to other traffikers in the area. http://www.dispatch.com/content/sto.../drug_cartel.ART_ART_08-18-08_B6_46B2B8J.html A word search for "Pike County Heroin" brings up a trove of busts in that area.

Here's an article with pics, in one of them there appears to be a heavy set male wearing a green shirt in handcuffs being escorted into some sort of truck...

What do you all think? It's photo number 23/24. This same person is in the earlier slides simply talking, but that does look to me as if he's being escorted...

It looks to me like they are only holding their hands behind their backs as they talk to others... no handcuffs. The one with the white hate... his left hand moves further away in the 25th (i think) photo. The green shirt guy looks to be leaning in and talking to someone in the truck. Or am I looking at the wrong people?

No those are the ones. It caught my eye because the one without the hat appears to be getting inside a car and it isn't comfortable to do w your hands behind your back. Also the female officer seems to have her hand on his elbow... I just don't know.

Weed will just about grow anywhere, its a weed, lol. I grew a plant in a pot in the garden here in Scotland no problem ( Just wanted to see if i could), although you will never get a large crop or high potency that way, they really need lights and the correct feed etc.

From March 22nd of this year (last month!)
On March 19, local law enforcement agencies joined together in “Operation Clean Sweep”, a saturation effort which resulted in multiple traffic stops and several arrests in Piketon.

“The main focus of ‘Operation Clean Sweep’ is an ongoing effort to combat drug trafficking and criminal activity within the Village of Piketon,” said Piketon Police Chief Mike Blair.

Seems like there has been a LOT of heat regarding cannabis grow operations in Piketon, specifically.
Did someone from the family snitch on another grower? Snitch on a cartel-owned grow operation to take the heat off of themselves?

Possible Reasons for beating up before killing:

1)Personal revenge

2)Perps heard there a huge stash of cash in the house, due to Cannabis operations. Hence beating/ killing family to reveal the location

3)Someone stole a huge stash of drugs and this is payback for stealing.

I think that would depend on the scale of the pot deal. If this family was moving huge amounts of cannabis, the cartels would not like that competition.

This is perhaps a stretch, but since Mexican nationals (cartel) were suspected of running the grow operation that was taken down in Pike County in 2012, maybe they were ratted out by locals? Maybe it was revenge.

This is a closeup from the article I posted earlier.

To me he looks handcuffed.

If its the cartel they dont usually bring in assassins do they?, is it not usually just a case of telling a few of their foot soldiers what to do, even the poor growers the cartels have working for them would more than likely do the deed if told to.
But wiping out a family is certainly something the cartels would do, even over something simple, although would they go out of their way to get the victim at the seperate residence?.

One of the people arrested in the "operation clean sweep" cannabis crackdown is a friend of the family, FWIW.
