'A MURDER investigation is under way after the charred remains of a woman’s body was found after a fire near Tumbulgum this morning.

Police are appealing for information after the burnt body was found on the side of a road in a paddock about 7.30am when emergency services were called to Pollards Road, Dulguigan, after reports of a fire.'

'The body and scene have been examined by specialist forensic officers.

The identity of the person is not yet known.

Detectives from Tweed/Byron Local Area Command and the Homicide Squad are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death, which is being treated as suspicious.'

Police hunt killer after woman found burning in tree in small town near Tumbulgum

'A WOMAN’S burning body, propped up against a tree alongside a narrow, overgrown dirt road in a remote area of the Tweed Valley, has sparked a major murder probe.

The horrific scene was discovered by an unsuspecting local who stumbled across the grisly crime on Pollards Rd, about 7km from the tiny northern NSW village of Tumbulgum, about 7.30am yesterday.

The motorist had seen the fire and stopped, thinking it was a burning log.'

'Police were last night tight-lipped about their investigations, other than to confirm the body was that of a woman.

“It is a horrible thing for anyone to come across,” said Detective Inspector Brendon Cullen. “(The motorist) has assisted us greatly, which I am very appreciative of.”

The remote road, which is edged by a thick canopy of trees, leads to just a handful of rural properties and would not be known to many people.'

'Detectives and forensic officers acted quickly, turning the area into a crime scene. Superintendent Wayne Starling said the body was badly burnt and all he could confirm was that it was a female.

“There is nothing more we can say at this time, but we are urging anyone who has concerns for a loved one to contact police,” he said.

Police packed up the crime scene about 4.30pm, leaving behind just the burnt tree and a black area on the dirt road to mark the spot where the body was found.'

'Supt Starling said homicide squad detectives from Sydney were leading this investigation.'

Eeek. This reminds me of the series "True Detective".

My first thought would be suicide. Awfully sad and brutal but it does happen.

From the sounds of the report though - the evidence is pointing otherwise.

Thanks for creating the thread. This combined with the "bag man" - I have a feeling we are going to get to know the local terrain and detectives quite well.

Hopefully there is a swift resolution to this one.

There was a man's body found burnt in a barrel in QLD not so long ago:

Shocking case from all accounts. AFAIK police deemed his death mostly likely to be a suicide and I've heard nothing further.

In this woman's case they've said there are suspicious circumstances so I wonder if she had obvious signs of trauma. I don't think it will take investigators long to bring an alleged perpetrator in for questioning either.

As for the local area, etc, I did notice DI Cullen, the investigator calling for information on Tumbulgum Man quoted in one of the news articles about this woman.

Busy week for DI Cullen. They've sent up support from Sydney pretty quickly.

This is looking very nasty.

I didn't even know there was a missing woman in Logan, I wonder what happened? Last seen leaving the police station at night - was she reporting something like harassment, was there an AVO in place or she was requesting one? The fact she was at the station at night makes me wonder.

All possible. Could be domestic violence or crime/gang related.

I can't find a trace of her on Facebook.

Do we need a new thread or moved thread now she has been identified? I don't know how to start one on tapatalk.

I'll ask a mod to edit the title and move the thread for us.

This is horrible. I grew up very close to this, and now live in Logan. It's such a beautiful, quiet part of the country, I can see how something awful could happen there without anyone hearing or seeing.
