Interesting this was bumped today as this was on my local news here in Des Moines (Ankeny is a suburb of Des Moines). Attempted kidnapping, impersonating a public official...and from a little sleuthing, looks like he's self employed...teaches firearm classes? And what was he doing so far away from Ankeny?

Creepy guy. Guess he was trolling for a child. I hope they nail his hide to the barn door!

ETA: :notgood: He's holding a little girl on a motorcycle...

This is interesting because a guy impersonating an officer would fit my theory on what happened in Evansdale.

Ankeny is 13 miles north of Des Moines on I-35 and it's only 120 miles (less than two hours) to Evansdale.

Where did you see him holding a child on a motorcycle?

Yep, I wouldn't put anything past these predators. It's on his FB page and the child is not his. There is a comment about the child wanting another ride. He replies "any time works for me."

He's definitely one they need to keep track of... JMO. And it would be nice if the 911 call was released so people would know the description of the vehicle... That's one of the few things we had in Lyric and Elizabeth's case.

The motive for homicide is usually sex, money or revenge. I don't know if the."traditional" motives apply to the abduction and murder of two children. I think control would also be a motive, since sexual assaults are about control over the victim with sex being a secondary motive. J MO.

What do you guys feel is the motivation for what happened to Elizabeth and Lyric?

Probably a thrill kill, probably by a youngish person who has a history of abuse of animals or something like that. Basically the same scenario as Jessica Ridgway and her killer.

He was quite a ways from home for the attempted abduction - making him an even more likely suspect for the cousins.

"Ankeny man ... Onawa Police received a 911 call reporting an attempted child abduction. ... An Iowa State Trooper spotted that vehicle south of Onawa on Interstate 29."

So far as I know, nothing has been said about the existence or not of DNA evidence.

Strictly my own hunch: I doubt there is any. The perp could easily have avoided touching either of the bikes or Elizabeth's purse and any DNA found on other surfaces could easily be from any one of dozens of innocent trail users. I doubt touch DNA would have survived at 7 Bridges (tho' I'd be thrilled to be wrong) and even DNA from bodily fluids probably would not survive that long. DNA enclosed within the bones and teeth is quite well protected and lasts for years outdoors but other DNA tends to degrade pretty quickly.

The best chance would probably be if there was a material like cloth or leather that would hold a body fluid like blood or semen. If either girl scratched him, there could be material under their fingernails as well.

We can hope, anyway.

If this is the man behind Elizabeth and Lyric, then he grabbed one child and when the other started screaming, or reacting, there were no adults to intervene.

Not if he claimed to be a police officer and insinuated they were in trouble for doing something wrong. I believe they would have obediently obeyed him.

From your linked article -
and falsely claiming to be a police officer Wednesday in Onawa.

The children were so young. 6 years old. Thank goodness the one child started screaming! The combination of meds he had did not make sense to me. His next hearing is scheduled for November 28. Will he have to register as a sex offender? I have learned so much from Lyric and Lizzy's case about these type of predators. Thank you all!

He could have been selling the pills.

. Viagra before, and Xanax later.

I hope something comes of this, at least get him registered. But that usually doesn't matter to this kind of individual. He will try until he is successful.

After five months of exposure to the elements, it seems unlikely to me that DNA might survive under fingernails. I'm not sure how to put this delicately but... the fingernails were probably detached from the bodies by that point, which would provide even less protection from soil microorganisms and the elements, if they were even found.

Considering that the hunters who found them said they practically stepped on one of the bodies when they discovered them, I think it is safe to say there was no odour, which would indicate that the bodies had gotten past the 'wet' stages of decomposition.

I'd like to think there was DNA but I have very little hope of that.
