Florida Power & Light staging site in Daytona Beach in advance of Hurricane Irma

FPL has pre-staged approximately 16,000 people at the Daytona International Speedway awaiting the all clear to deploy and assist.

In addition, crews also arrived from Pacific Gas & Electric in California into Palm Beach International Airport.

When the reporter asked her if she was worried about the storm surge, she said "I have to think positive".

I was outraged when I heard her say that - thinking positive has NOTHING to do with it!

I know. "Thinking positive" is the secular form of prayer. Neither works, but provides comfort to those who have (or claim to have) no alternatives. Until they are speared by storm-driven shrapnel.

OK. Tornadoes...not good.

"As of*11 p.m. ET Saturday, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) placed Irma about 90 miles southeast of Key West with winds of up to 120 miles per hour. The center said the storm was moving west-northwest at 6 mph and warned of "heavy squalls with embedded tornadoes sweeping across South Florida.""

Snip

"The National Weather Service in Miami posted on Twitter on Saturday evening that a tornado had touched the ground in the Fort Lauderdale suburb of Oakland Park. It wasn't immediately clear how much damaged was caused.

Tornado warnings have been issued for Fort Lauderdale, Coral Springs, Pompano Beach and Sunrise in Broward County, as well as parts of nearby Palm Beach and Hendry Counties."

Whether praying or thinking positive or just generally being a moron, I think those who put their helpless children in harm's way of a hurricane should be held accountable for child endangerment, or worse, depending upon the outcome.

Adults are free to suffer the consequences of their reckless decisions. Helpless babies have no choice and are at the mercy of their stupid parents.

One guy interviewed in this clip thinks he and a neighbour can get into his truck and outrun the storm surge if he sees it coming! Um, no. Just foolhardy. Where do people come up with this stuff? http://globalnews.ca/video/rd/1043147331751/

Too many action movies!!!!

Nature is really good at making sure that some moron's genes don't survive.

I won't feel sorry for this dude if he doesn't make it.

Look how it is rebuilding itself

Any live Miami cams right now? Cranes?

I, too, am wondering how all those construction cranes will fare. They're purported to withstand hurricane winds up to 145 mph. They're supposed to "weathervane".

We'll see.
