I have been lurking but not posting because this one really got to me. Thank you to the posters for your insights and updates. I am gutted by the realization that a new generation of children will not have parents. Such a beautiful woman and family. Such a horrific end. Does anyone know how long child protective services will keep the children?? I hope they can live with their uncle or cousins.

I assume they will have a shelter hearing in the next few days. Someone said that her sister has them but I'm not sure if that is right or not.

So correct me if I am wrong and I will delete, but because he's been arrested we can post Steve's Facebook account if public and if we link and don't screenshot, right? Yesterday morning Steve was trying to sell his beloved Mustang. The timing seems suspicious.

It appears he's either trying to raise money to get out of town and/or pay some hefty legal fees. Collecting and restoring these cars seems an expensive and frivolous hobby, especially for a guy with a mortgage, kids, etc. The hobby confirms my suspicion that Steve's attitude and his motive for killing the mother of his children fits a certain cultural stereotype. He was raised in a culture where males are authoritarian, where they express their masculinity through accumulation of possessions and consider their wives and children to be chattel - possessions they own and control.

Lived in Texas for several years and that subculture, with it's violence towards women, was prevalent.

ETA: Relevant quote from one of her friends:

"When Steve decided that if he couldn't have her, nobody else could he also made the decision for her children, her family and her friends," Raimondi said of the suspected killer, even before charges were finalized. "He took her away from all of us because of his one selfish act."

How do we change that culture? How do we re-socialize men who believe this to realize women are not property?

The briefcase wasn't an issue for me. I am a realtor. I work from my office and home. Some clients I work with for many months before they list or purchase. I have various real estate bags. I have files at home, office and my car. When I get busy, I carry loose folders until I have time to reorganize myself. If you came to my house now, you would find a bag of real estate files by where my computer is located but it is not the files I was working on this week (but could be working on tomorrow). Also regarding computers, I have a desktop at the office, a laptop, smartphone and internet connected tablet. Most everything I do is cloud based and I can log in from anywhere to reach my records.

I wonder how much the hurricane had to do with the murder though.

Everyone's routines were messed up due to evacuations and preparations etc.

Without the hurricane everyone would have been at work/school.

But it seems SM was mad she stayed with the BF that night before. Maybe they fought over that and he "accidentally" on purpose killed her.

I wonder where the body was to outlast a hurricane and flood. Did he bury it?

This is sort of obvious at this point but now it makes sense to me that CM's relationship w/her boyfriend was very new. Maybe it took SM a few weeks to get over the initial shock of it -- then he turned to rage. He sent the text the night before about her daughter wanting to see her. He was absolutely seething, knowing CM was spending the night w/her new beau, thus the 'inappropriate' situation bc she was not home w/him where he thought she belonged.

Add to this the possibility of SM just finding out about the cruise and... ugh.

I just hope he does the right thing and confesses so her children & family can move forward w/out a drawn-out trial.

As for if this crime qualifies for the death penalty or not, think of CM's kids -- that's their dad and they still love him and that would be absolutely awful for them. I highly doubt they saw what he did to their mom so their feelings for him probably haven't changed (yet.) They are still so young & innocent.

All my opinion.

I am sorry if this has already been touched upon; I am a few pages behind...

I wonder how the police KNOW that she was able to see her beautiful children that last day...? Just by SM's word alone? I don't know if I would believe him. I am having a hard time with this because if she did see them, I can't come up with a logical explanation for how it all went down without them being aware of it.

Were they along when he dropped off the car? The odds are good that they had to be with their father if she was able to see them.

What in the world?!!! How was his mind even able to manage that? Had he thought he was getting away with it? Or maybe hoping to raise some funds to flee?

Good grief, if I had murdered someone I don't think I would have been able to function like that. I'd be curled up in the fetal position in a corner shaking in my boots. His mind must have truly snapped on some level...

I imagine he knew he was going to be needing a lawyer and thought he had enough time to secure the funds.

Perhaps when they were interviewed? The sheriff said (in the 3rd or 4th HLN segment) that LE wouldn't be doing the interviews for the children themselves but specialists would.

He wasn't charged with capital murder. He was charged with murder, a first degree felony. In Texas they are not the same. I posted a link a page or two ago explaining the differences. It's pretty interesting what counts as capital murder there vs other states. He just doesn't seem to qualify for a capital charge.

I think AM75 knew that when s/he posted the info about what constitutes a capital murder charge.

bbm They had the kids interviewed by trained personnel.

or perhaps he realized he was going to jail soon and wanted to sell his assets to put money into a trust for his children so others couldn't get their hands on it.. who really knows

i wonder what happens now to all of his & her assets.. and how much of those sold assets will be put into a trust for their children

now is the time where banks, lawyers & family members will truly show how selfish they're when it comes to how their assets are divided

i hope they think about their children's future above all else

As far as I can tell, he found out about the boyfriend Wednesday or Thursday. On HLN they shared texts from a friend of hers from Alabama - the friend asked Crystal what Steve thought of boyfriend and she said Steve didn't know - this was the Tuesday before she went missing. However, Paul said Steve found out they were dating from an outside source by Thursday but he didn't know about Paul going on the cruise.

Since no one has posted it yet, here is Steve's Youtube channel. https://www.youtube.com/user/McSt3v3/videos

You have to admit that if you knew nothing about this guy and just happened to stumble upon his page you'd think he was the most normal person ever. That's what makes it so scary.

I don't think he planned it. Inclined to believe it happened when she told him the truth about the boyfriend and cruise.

But I often think the best of people and can't believe that he would choose to plan to orphan his children.

My husband has told me that I'm free to leave him at anytime and he won't fight for me or chase me. It seems quite unromantic at times. Then cases like this make me so happy that I married a man who respects my right to choose my partner.

I'm torn on whether or not it was premeditated.

The sheriff said the storm had nothing to do with the crime, so that certainly makes it sound like it wasn't.

The text about the daughter didn't sit well with me (so emotionally manipulative) but I don't know if I'd go as far as to say it meant he planned to kill her that night. I think her response that she'll see the kids in the morning was just another drop in the bucket for him though.

That, and photos of him on other sm, is just his public face. Crystal got to experience his private face, a much darker, and manipulative Steve, and I don't mean only in her final hours. (There were texts by her to a work friend where she said Steve didn't treat her well previously iirc.)

We all have two faces (or maybe even more, but these two are very distinct), public and private. That's why people are often so surprised and stunned when someone turned out to have committed a murder.

Just FWIW and jmo.

That is only as far as Paul knows / Crystal knew. Who knows if he found out about the cruise Thursday as well. I think he found out that night via email or something and then tried to lure her home for a fight with the text about their daughter. When she didn't go home, that probably enraged him further.
