""She didn't die in the fire. I don't believe that was Belle's body. I believed she escaped and that was somebody else. Some unknown person," says Johnson, "without a head, you can't prove it is her body. And I am sure it is not."

There have been efforts to try to identify that headless body found in the fire. In 2007 the body was exhumed and a DNA sample was taken. Indiana State Police tried matching it with envelopes and stamps from Belle Gunness, but they were far too old to get a decent sample. Recently, a woman from Norway, a direct descendent of Belle's grandmother, offered her DNA to compare. But there is not enough money to get it tested, so it sits in a crime lab in Texas."

That's sad. Maybe we can get a donation going through websleuths? Mods, is this possible? If everyone donated a buck through PayPal we could get this going ASAP!

Esther Carlson has been ruled out as Belle Gunness - turns out Carlson was a serial killer herself.

To summarize - Esther Carlson exists in documents such as immigration, census, and marriage records before Belle "dies" in 1908, and thus they must be different people.

I do think that Belle Gunness faked her death, though. Which means that body is a Jane Doe.

Thanks for the info. I too, think that Belle faked her death and left the area. I also think that it will remain a mystery of what really happened to her.

I thought they found pictures of BELLes kids in a trunk of Esther Carlson’s, as well as someone calling and identifying Esther as Belle when seeing her picture after her arrest?
