GUILTY Canada - Tess Richey, 22, Toronto, 25 Nov 2017 *Arrest*

It’s good you’re trying. At least someone is. But I can’t help but think how much easier it would be if you were playing around on that program using the input of the other 3 individuals that were in the company of the suspect that night. Better still if you had a world class sketch-artist in the room that could use the input of those individuals along with the existing face pics to produce a likeness much closer to what this guy actually looks like. The police could then release that image along with any other details that they have learned since the initial images were released. For example, a better approximation of his height which as you already mentioned would be easy to estimate in relation to surrounding objects in existing pictures. At the same time they could release video of the suspect walking (which they say they have) which may also trigger recognition by someone who knows him. At the bear minimum the release of these few items would get the story back in the media for a day or two.

But as you already commented, it’s really hard to tell with this case what has significance vs what is negligence. They obviously know what they’re doing – they just caught a serial killer (even if it took a while – they got their man). I guess we just have to be patient. For all we know they already identified the guy and are just taking their time. Or of the thousands of tips that already came through Crime Stoppers maybe 2 or 3 names keep popping up and they’re confident they’re getting close. What else could explain the lack of perceived pro-activeness and sense of urgency?

Yeah, I'm mostly just doing things because I need to feel like I'm doing SOMETHING in case they AREN'T actually close.

But I'm inclined to agree with what you're saying at the bottom. I think it's very possible that they have the guy, or a couple of guys who it might be, under observation and are just waiting to be sure or assembling an airtight case. They apparently had Bruce McArthur under observation at least as early as October and had trace blood evidence to use against him but still waited several more months until they had more. I can't imagine what would constitute a smoking gun that would allow them to move in this particular case though. Possibly something placing the suspect in/around the neighbourhood at the time of the murder?

Another idea would be to have a few guys of similar height and build as the suspect stand in front of that ATM camera in similar positions and lighting conditions. Im sure a really good photo editor or graphics specialist would be able to look at all the photos and get a really good sense of the distortions the camera was making. Perhaps with the help of the 3 people who saw the suspect that night adjustments and touch ups could be made to produce far better images.

Im sure this would be helpful. Just as seeing video of the suspect walking on the sidewalk would be helpful. But hopefully the reason were not seeing these things is because they're not needed at this point.

And im sure you're right that the next step would be find ways to place the person of interest in the Church and Wellesley area that night.

Lush, those pictures are great. I think they could definitely be helpful.

I have to say that they are going to give me nightmares though! [emoji15]

Thanks. They definitely fall into the uncanny valley in a pretty creepy way. Plus the only way I could get it to reproduce his expression at all from the one head on angle was to use a toggle entitled "Baring Teeth", which is just so creepy in this context.

I guess when (I'm going to be optimistic and say "when") they arrest him we'll get to see how my skills as an amateur facial reproduction artist are after a weekend of practice.

New details about Tess Richey's final hours may provide clues about her murder

Woman, believed to be last person who saw her alive, says 22-year-old 'seemed really upset'
'There's nothing about him that stood out'

A woman named Michelle, whose last name CBC Toronto agreed to conceal over concerns for her safety, says Richey, Simard and the man walked by her house, near Church and Dundonald streets, around 3:30 a.m. while she and a friend were outside smoking after they finished work.

"They were kind of loud and rambunctious and she thought she was disturbing us so she was like, 'Oh I'm sorry. I didn't mean to disturb you,'" Michelle said of Richey.
From there, the strangers struck up a conversation, despite having more than a 20-year age difference.

"She seemed really upset and I was really drawn to her," said Michelle. "She was telling me that she recently broke up with her boyfriend so she was upset."

"He was quiet the whole time. He basically blended in with the background," she recalled. "There's nothing about him that stood out. That's why I didn't remember his name. He just became invisible."

She describes him as polite and shy, like "the guy next door."

"I actually believed it was a friend of hers," she explained, noting when Richey got upset during their conversation the man comforted her. "I would never in a million years think he would have hurt her."

The messages Hermeston received from Uber suggest Richey had ordered a ride, but then it was cancelled 15 minutes later. It is unclear whether Richey or the driver cancelled the trip.

Richey's FitBit logged she took close to 300 steps after 3 a.m., according to Rachel.
Rachel explains they recently counted the number of steps Richey would have taken between the front entrance of Michelle's home on Dundonald Street to where her body was found on Church Street. She says they determined the distance totalled 126 steps, adding they don't know where Richey was when she took the other half of the steps.

Hm, the 300 step thing is a bit odd but it's relatively easy to make up the difference between those step counts if you're drunk and swerving all over the place or if they paced back and forth a couple times in front of the house. If they had actually made any significant detour, I'd expect the discrepancy to be slightly larger.

I find it slightly odd that their reason for talking to the people on Dundonald was so happenstance. What reason did they even have to walk up Dundonald at all if that was the case? Of all the streets that break off from that stretch of Church to get back toward Yonge, it's the one I'd imagine you'd be least likely to take. I guess it's possible they were just walking random streets while drunk, but Dundonald doesn't really have anything of interest and is super dark.

(PS: tarabull, I tried to dm you back but it looks like your inbox is full.)

I really thought someone would have recognised that CCTV image, i would be pretty clear to someone who knows him.
The thing that looks strange about his mouth in the images, as soon as I seen it my first thought was he had a plastic fork in his mouth. My husband always gets food after a night out and he always puts the fork in his mouth while he opens the food. I suppose it depends what he got to eat that needed a fork but that was my first thought.
I know nobody was blaming the friend for leaving Tess but if you turn it round it could be said the other way. Tess had someone with her so she could have easily walked the friend to the street car with the suspect and then called an uber for herself. I don't think they thought of these things to be honest. It could have easily have been the friend that this happened too.
I hope the family of Tess are plastering that CCTV image everywhere. This could have easily been me in either situation be it staying with the man or going off to get a taxi on my own when a friend has been hooked up with someone and I felt like a gooseberry.

I have a fitbit. It will count movements of your arms/ hands as steps. Dancing on the spot for example will get you steps. I have also gotten steps from washing dishes.

That makes me think he could’ve led her that way. Especially the fact that it’s really dark.

The description the witness gave gives me the creeps. It’s so sad that a sober person that encountered them isn’t able to provide more info. It’s not her fault of course, but frustrating nonetheless.

I wonder if he had a really common name then. One would usually remember interesting/ unusual names, right? They'd stand out.

15 mins is such a long time to have to wait for an uber... on a friday night you would expect that area would have a lot? i find it odd an uber hadn't shown up by that point

I'm actually unclear on this after a reread. This article says again that it's unclear whether the driver or Tess cancelled the ride. 15 mins is such a long time - making me think the Uber showed up, waited a bit, cancelled, and left, because Tess didn't show up...

Would be useful to have precise time of when surveillance images show Tess and the POI going into the stairwell - since I read that they do have this on camera, and him emerging alone later. Uber was called at 4am or so - does the video show them before it was cancelled or after?

I'm curious if the witness that spoke with them would say he looked like the images that have been posted, or which of the still shots best resembles him. Perhaps we will get a sketch? So happy there is some new news - no matter how small - it all helps.

The encounter the witness described gave me the creeps, too. It just goes to show how skilled and manipulative these perpetrators can be. He was comforting her? He was essentially a stranger, acting as though he knew her well.

So there's a discussion on a Facebook group, and sadly, someone from Burlington, Ontario hadn't heard of Tess Richey. It's in no way this person's fault, but it shone a light on the fact that the coverage isn't reaching communities just outside of Toronto. Burlington is actually so close by, and the suspect could be in or from any of these surrounding areas. The family, friends, and strangers even, are doing everything they can to keep his image and this case in circulation through social media, but why isn't MSM doing more?

I know this has been discussed here before, but being from Toronto, I hadn't experienced much of this first hand yet. Oy.

I must have seen you on that thread! It shocked me so much too. I'm tweeting it like mad. But feeling like loads of people don't really care. More people from outside of Ontario have shared his images than friends in Ontario have :/

Someone on Reddit today remarked that they'd never seen the images or heard of the case and that they seem to have been spread less than images of a guy who stole a poppy donation box.

I sincerely hope that there is more going on with police behind the scenes to explain the lack of urgency behind spreading the images. If that's not the case, then allowing the suspect images to completely disappear from the TPS website is just negligence.

I would estimate I’ve brought up the case to about 8-12 people I know and showed them pics of Tess and the suspect and not one of them was familiar with the case or the pics. Not one. I work near the Eaton centre and was actually thinking of trying an experiment of approaching like 20-30 random people and asking them if they had heard of the case or seen the pics just to see what percentage would be. I would estimate it’s well under 10% of Toronto. I think there are probably pockets where the percentage would be much higher such as people who live and frequent the village and maybe Ryerson and U of T students. But overall it’s not a great level of familiarity. Then to add insult to injury each of those pics released looks like a different person. Others have already commented similar experiences but I can honestly look at one of the side profile shots and see a similarity with a guy I used to work with, and then I can look at the pic of the guy where it looks like he is eating something and see a similarity with a friend of my brothers and then I can look at that full body pic where he is standing sort of funny and I get a sense I’ve seen him before but can’t quite put my finger on it. But the hard truth is these pics are bad and they could be almost anyone. They need to work with sketch artists and photo editors to clean them up. That Michelle lady from the article sounded pretty on the ball and she was sober. She must have got a pretty good look at the guy over 20 minutes and could be helpful in producing a better image. And why not release video of how this guy walks?
