I’m interested in the body language. Anyone that watched the hearing....did they even look at one another? Or did she only have eyes for her attorney?

UGH!! That woman is sitting there smiling. She is such a creep! Why the H*** would anyone sit there and smile up at a lawyer at a time like this? She turns my stomach.

Manipulative esteem and homage, IMO.

Are David and Louise in separate cells? Or can they communicate with each other in the same cell?

Satch

They do not place men and women who are facing charges like this in the same cells. Genders are kept separate, even in general population. A husband and wife would never be placed together, not where they could coordinate their stories.

Did DT appear to be annoyed at LT? He appears VERY annoyed in the pic

I think she's also obsessed with the idea of pleasing men. She's got the "old fashioned" values that men are superior to women and that women should be devoted to making them happy. I see the photo of her smiling at her lawyer as one where she's trying hard to please him and make him proud of her.

I guess she made an exception for the LE escorting her out of her house in handcuffs, for whom she provided not deferential smiles, but spittle? ;)

Her smiling in court today reminds me of Diane Downs-the woman who killed one of her children and injured the other two, claiming that they were shot by a carjacker on a dark, country road. She also flirted with every man she met willy nilly. (Interesting that the prosecutor wound up adopting two of the kids.)

I think she is flirting with him, using the power of her feminine wiles to sway him. Seriously, she is not all there. She doesn't see that she has done anything wrong.

JmHO
I really think she’s nuts and has never matured. It’s mostly her imo that ran the show at home. She bat ***** crazy and never grew up.

I really wonder if she understands the gravity of the situation, or thinks the defense lawyer is some kind of knight in shining armor? It's very bizarre...

I am a homeschooling mom in Nebraska. The only requirements here are to fill out a form online. As soon as you get the e-mail back, within a minute or two after submitting the form, you are allowed to take the children out of school to homeschool. The process took me under 20 minutes to complete. There are no inspections, no tests, no yearly review, no submission of grades or academic portfolios...nothing at all in my state to check up on homeschooled kids. You simply have to fill out a form online once a year saying that you are choosing to homeschool and that you will provide a certain number of hours per year in five required subjects. It's really bizarre and I found it unsettling how easy it was. I fully support inspections and regulations on homeschools. I grew up in an abusive, isolated environment, so when I see that the system makes things that easy on people, I automatically assume the rights are going to get abused by sadistic people such as the Turpins.

Thank you for sharing your story, I totally understand, and yes, there should be some middle ground for homeschoolers and the state.

My friend from college who was homeschooled and went on to become a doctor, her family lived in OH, from what I have read, one of the few states that has strict requirements for homeschooling (http://education.ohio.gov/Topics/Quality-School-Choice/Home-Schooling). I know the homeschooling laws vary by state.

I realize the Turpins are not representative of most homeschoolers (which is a good thing).

So sorry to hear about your abusive/isolated background.

Small insight to the oldest from a classmate from 3rd grade I believe:

"He said despite being bullied by her peers, she "was still one of the most pleasant people I have had the opportunity to meet. She had this whimsical optimism to her that couldn't be dampened, couldn't be doused no matter what anybody threw at her."

This would be 29 yr old, so about 21 years ago.

Interesting both those classmates are now a registered nurse and pediatric resident. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-new...e-turpin-daughter-says-girl-was-frail-n840526

I'm hopelessly behind on reading WSl threads. Have WSl posters commented on how SURELY the kids' journals are going to all be twisted, because they were all just writing what the parents wanted them to write - I bet the journals will be 'fairy tale fantasies of how happy we are in our Disneyland lives with our WONDERFUL parents !'.

Investigators have learned that the children were isolated from each other and locked in different rooms in small groups, Hestrin said.
The children did not have access to televisions or radios but were able to read and write and expressed themselves in hundreds of journals that were seized from the home, the district attorney said.
“It appears to me that they lacked any kind of understanding about how the world worked,” Hestrin said.

Borderline. She'll try to cozy up to her lawyer and she'll drop him like yesterday's news the second he shows any doubt. There is some poetic justice that the young woman sitting next to DT could be one of his daughters in an alternate reality. And she is advising him while he is shackled.

BPD/NPD excuses nothing, imo btw. But it does speak to the kind of mind **** these siblings may have been subjected too. "I hate you, don't leave me."
I am diagnosed Borderline and PTSD. I can totally see potential BPD symptoms in LT. I agree with you, it is NOT an excuse.

OMG get out of my head.
That lady still gives me the creeps when I hear an old DuranDuran song. I was so young when I read that book on her.
Hers was Hungry Like a Wolf

To those who are expressing skepticism - I respect that there is a legal requirement to presume that someone is innocent until proven guilty. However, that doesn't mean that those of us not on the jury have to turn off our brains and refuse to make logical conclusions based on evidence presented -- including a logical assessment of what is and isn't credible.

I actually agree with you that there may well be some claims being thrown out that aren't accurate, especially claims coming from assorted neighbors/classmates/relatives. But in order to "reserve judgement" on the fundamental issue of this being a horrific case of abuse, we'd have to presume a massive conspiracy on the part of LE, a medical team, and assorted witnesses, probably including some of the kids. And to what end? There simply isn't any motivation for all of these people to be fabricating evidence wholesale.

So we have:

- LE responding to a 17 year old claiming terrible abuse.
-LE showing up and reportedly finding three children in chains.
-Medical officials reporting that the children were dangerously malnourished and both physically and developmentally well behind age level.
-Continuing reports that the children are confirming and elaborating on the abuse
-Multiple stories from neighbors and classmates that would support the notion that something was very off in the home.

So, I wouldn't say, at this point, that we "know" that all the neighbors stories are true, or even that every specific claim that is being reported as coming from the kids is accurate. But I say again that we do know -- to the extent that we can "know" much of anything we didn't see with our own two eyes -- that there were chained, malnourished, and emotionally stunted children and adults living in that house, because the alternative is to get into conspiracy theory territory.

I can’t provide a link but she was the same at the arraignment. Nauseating. She seemed to be flirting with her lawyer. IMO. Can anyone help me out with a link to the arraignment? TIA
