qq, is there DNA from any of the LISK victims? I formerly worked with Suffolk Co. crime lab and curious as to where the science is on this case.

Remains were in the elements anywhere from 3 months to several yrs. Wouldnt the DNA be degraded?

Not necessarily, I have gotten DNA from cases that are decades old, it all depends on the circumstances.

Suffolk LE does not have too good raport with press so not much information has been released to public. I mean even FBI has been fobbed off by them to stay away. So no idea, but they probably do have lots of evidence. FBI is now working on it, but again, not too much was released yet.

By the way, this was released yesterday:

BREAKING: Judge demands transcript of 911 call in Long Island Serial Killer investigation

In what may turn out to be a significant and certainly a long-awaited development, a Long Island judge has ordered the Suffolk County Police Department to hand over a transcript of the 911 call made by an escort whose mysterious disappearance led to the discovery of the Long Island Serial Killer’s dumping ground.
---
Judge Sanford Berland ordered Suffolk County police officials to “produce the reasons why they can’t release the tapes
---
Berland also reportedly ordered them to provide the judge with a full transcript of the 911 call for him to review.

The attorney said Tuesday was the first time a judge has demanded a transcript of the call. The county has been given a deadline of March 19

What a shame! They were lovely to work with, but I was working FOR them. I suppose they draw in ranks when the outside comes pounding on their door. Just seems like a waste when cooperation amongst LE is a really important tool in solving larger crimes.

It's interesting that LI's leading newspaper NEWSDAY hasn't printed a word about the 911 tapes. This is why Blog Boards such as this are important.

LE works together? The question is how they work together and for what purposes. A lot of clues even in Newsday to suggest otherwise.

What is the rationale for not releasing the tapes?

I know I am not a popular opinion on LE [emoji846], but I have had positive experiences in my 10 years in almost all cases. Not to say they are faultless, but I still give them the benefit of the doubt for a good chunk of personal experience working with them from the outside.

I think many appreciate your experiences with SCPD. I think for the large part SCPD cops are as good as they get. But is a lot more complicated than that.

You have to understand what happened in the Loeb case to understand what goes on in the minds of a police officer/police department.

LE claims as a RULE they dont release 911 tapes.
That rule provides a smokescreen for the tapes they really dont want the public to hear. IMO.

Agreed Hawk.. well said. This should be big news locally.

Where are you Newsday/News12LI?

Don’t release to judges? That seems odd... I get not releasing them to the media to a degree.

Good news.

Hope the judge gets the audio too. If I was the judge I would demand both audio and transcripts. Never know if someone is trying to coverup for someone that may have did this crime.

They were ordered to hand over the tapes over a yr ago. They appealed.
Correct me if Im wrong folks. Didnt a Det say he will never hand over the tapes?

But... um... he doesn't get to decide that... they aren't HIS tapes

And yet he made that decision.
This is just a tidbit of what Hawk was talking about.
This may or may not be the same Det that told Newsday ( under someones direction) that Shannan was calm on the tape.
ME states the opposite is true.

...

Judge Sanford Berland directed Tuesday attorneys for Suffolk police to make a copy of the recording available for review in the judge’s chambers by March 19. That’s the next court date in the lawsuit filed by John Ray, a Miller Place-based attorney for the family of Shannan Gilbert, the New Jersey woman who was reported missing from Oak Beach and was found dead in 2011.

“There are missing pieces that [the plaintiffs] are trying to put together, as the police presumably are as well,” Berland said in court. “But there may be pieces of information that may be useful to the plaintiff without compromising the investigation.”

...

Elaine Barraga, who represented Suffolk police, said that releasing the tapes would conflict with the open investigation, but there has been “certainly no effort in trying to hide or ‘fudge’ information.”

Berland also questioned whether the investigation would be compromised by the release of the tapes.

“By not being the homicide detective or having that expertise, I can only rely on what the detectives are telling me,” Barraga said of her argument that the investigation would be compromised by releasing the tapes.
