‘I hate you Bonnie’: Golden State Killer likely motivated by animosity toward ex-fiancee, investigator says

SACRAMENTO — The Golden State Killer called out “I hate you Bonnie” in one of his earliest sexual assaults — and that critical clue ultimately helped lead investigators to Joseph DeAngelo, a man with a Bonnie in his past, as well as provide a possible motive for his horrific killing and raping spree, an investigator said Tuesday.

DeAngelo, the 72-year-old warehouse worker authorities believe is the killer, once was engaged to a woman named Bonnie.

Good grief, this case. After I read JJD actually broke into his victims' houses, emptied bullets from their guns, ate food, etc., I certainly did not sleep well last night.

Yikes.

With respect to composites, this one is dead on to me.

I think, from his recent photo, he looks bad for his age.
He certainly hasn't taken 'care of himself', or is it, years of "anger" has contributed to his appearance.

im thinking she knew something wasn't quite right with him, followed her gut and broke off the engagement.
Exactly my thoughts too. I was wondering if it was released if it was then a lot of people didn't make the connection. Anyone that knew them would also know about the breakup. IDK maybe it was one thing they kept quiet.

Maybe it is I read someone in the media yesterday someone said his toupee was ripped off his head.

That makes the most sense to me. I noticed that thing on very top back part of his head last night and we were wondering what it was. I bet it has something to do with anchoring a toupee. It does look like a small bulge in one spot that is unnatural. I wonder if he wore the toupee to help disguise himself over the years. Not sure if hair places have something that helps attach a toupee and is anchored to top of head.

It makes the most sense to me after hearing a toupee was ripped off his head. Interesting. Would like to see what color hair the toupee was.

I have been away a while from here and I have a question. What brought them to him? Was there a tip? I haven't heard? (forgive me if it has been talked about). I can't go back and read previous posts. Thanks in advance

Relative's DNA from genealogy websites cracked East Area Rapist case, DA's office says

Sacramento investigators tracked down East Area Rapist suspect Joseph James DeAngelo using genealogical websites that contained genetic information from a relative, the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office confirmed Thursday.

The effort was part of a painstaking process that began by using DNA from one of the crime scenes from years ago and comparing it to genetic profiles available online through various websites that cater to individuals wanting to know more about their family backgrounds by accepting DNA samples, said Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Grippi.

IMOO I was wondering about that. At first I thought he had a raw bloody place on the back top of his head.

closed in on him after the DNA match and realizing he had an ex-fiance named Bonnie. . .

Paul Holes, an investigator who has been linked to the case for years, said one of the critical clues linking DeAngelo was that he yelled out 'I hate you Bonnie' during one of his first alleged rape attacks.
DeAngelo was once engaged to a woman named Bonnie.
'Most certainly if he's making the statement, 'I hate you, Bonnie,' while he's attacking another female, he is what we call an anger retaliatory rapist. Instead of directing his anger at what's making him angry, he's directing it sideways onto someone else to be able to satisfy that anger,' Holes told The Mercury News.
'I do believe that's what happened here. I don't know what made him that way, but you've got to think Bonnie dumped him, he's not happy about that, he still had feeling for her, who knows? But something along those lines must have happened.'
Holes, who has been a key investigator in the case since 1994, said he helped test DNA from the various crime scenes and tie them all together.
'We always thought there was a Bonnie significant in his life, it could be a mother, a wife, a girlfriend, a childrhood crush,' Holes said.
He said that they closed in on him after the DNA match and realizing he had an ex-fiance named Bonnie.

Agreed. He looks well into his 80s imo. I doubt he's been living stress free. Hopefully he's had many, many sleepless nights over the past couple decades! And he's about to get many more!

Anyone else besides me who thinks this monster should be castrated, even if he is a "former" serial rapist?

Hopefully it's from LE using his head to open a door..............or two.

That's fun and all.. Makes people feel better about a situation that they are helpless to effect but that would compromise the case and isn't productive.

Farrel Ward, 75, served on the Exeter Police Department with DeAngelo. Ward called him a "black sheep," saying he was quiet and didn't fit in with other officers.
[....]
Ward said he thought DeAngelo was overqualified for the small-town job because he graduated from Sacramento State with a degree in criminal justice.
"He knew everything about everything, but he didn't have common sense about him," Ward said.

That's not quite accurate. Colin Pitchfork was arrested in September 1987 and convicted in January 1988.

Whether Pitchfork's conviction in 1988 had any effect on De Angelo's activities would depend on whether he could have known about it at the time. This was 10 years before widespread access to the WWW began so online access to news sources was still in its infancy. Was the case reported in the US media and if so how widespread was the reporting?
In 1986 Richard Buckland was exonerated with DNA even though he had confessed.
