Police look for answers in cold case of mother missing 13 years

Police are searching for a mother who went missing from the Tulalip Indian Reservation more than 13 years ago—it is one of only three unsolved cases in the Marysville Police Department.

[snip]

Marysville police have gotten over 100 tips on this case - most of which point in one direction.

“We think that it is quite possible that she did overdose” said Shackelton. “And the people that she was with got scared and didn`t want to get in trouble and did something with her body.”

Police say anyone with information can come forward without fear of prosecution.

TULALIP, Wash. – Human remains have been found near Tulalip Resort Casino, the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office said Monday.

Crews found the skeletal body Sunday during a search for a missing 24-year-old man. The Sheriff’s office said the remains are unrelated to the Everett man’s case.

“Detectives believe the human remains to be several years old,” a release said.
The remains were recovered from a wooded area in the 9900 block of 27[SUP]th[/SUP] Ave NE.
The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the identity of the person and how they died.

The discovery of a skull in the area in 2016 was possibly related to this case. I can't find any follow up information regarding whether this possibility was determined to be a match or not. I sent an email to the author of this article in October of 2017 asking if there had been any updates, but never received a reply. I've just sent an email to the assigned detective (Shackleton) asking if there were any further updates on this possible match.

Skull Found on Tulalip Indian Reservation

I just received an email response from Detective Shackleton on this: "I don’t believe the skull has been identified yet, but it did not match Lisa Sledge’s dental records."

Details of Disappearance

Sledge was last seen in Marysville, Washington on December 12, 1997. She was riding in a red four-wheel drive 1984 Toyota pickup truck with her boyfriend, Erik Lauren Mattison, during the late afternoon hours, and their truck got stuck in the mud west of Interstate 5.

The two of them went to a friend's home on the Tulalip Indian Reservation on Quilceda Road to ask for help. The friend couldn't help them, and they left.

On December 13, Mattison returned to the friend's home to ask again for help. Sledge wasn't with him at the time. Mattison stated she had separated from him and went to get assistance and never returned. He said he eventually got the truck out of the mud himself, but then it got stuck again elsewhere and he abandoned it.

Authorities didn't find the truck until early January 1998. It was partially stripped and abandoned in a wooded area of the Tulalip Reservation, east of Marine View Drive and north of Waterworks Road. It was only then that police realized the vehicle had been stolen. Sledge has never been heard from again.

She left behind two young children, one of whom has Down Syndrome, and her father raised them. She is considered to be missing under suspicious circumstances; investigators have heard reports that she died of an accidental drug overdose and her body was disposed of. Her case remains unsolved.
