Watching ABC World News Now...they’re still trying to pump the water out and as soon as it reaches neck level they’re going to try to float them out with life jackets it looks like. They just showed the life jackets and a man showing a visual of “neck level” via physical gesture.

5 to 8 inches of rain predicted over the next ten days per ABC News coverage.

“Groundwater Specialist” is on saying “once the rain comes in, the water is going to come up, ok, and it’s going to be hard for the Navy Seals to try to take the kids out.”

Reporter is in a nearby cave showing how it narrows the further you go in: “it’s cold, it’s damp, it smells...these kids, being in here for so long under these conditions, it’s unimaginable.”

FIFA boss invites Thai cave boys to World Cup final
Infantino said he hoped the Wild Boars team, who were stranded by rising floodwaters two weeks ago, would be rescued in time to watch the final in Moscow on July 15.

"If, as we all hope, they are reunited with their families in the coming days and their health allows them to travel, FIFA would be delighted to invite them to attend the 2018 World Cup final as our guests," he wrote in a letter to the head of the Football Association of Thailand.

...July 15th? Sorry, I'm sure this was meant to be a nice gesture, but right now it seems more like a sick, cruel joke.
By all means, Mr. Infantino, please do invite them in 2019.
I want all 13 seats to be filled.

I think if... NO... WHEN!-- they rescue these young men, they'll have good seats and invites to many events. Maybe the boys have been told of this invite and it is being used to bolster their spirits? That'd be a pretty big motivator if some of the youngsters are scared of the rescue plans. When the Chilean miners were awaiting rescue they got a game piped in via the internet. People love sports and it can be a motivator. The Beaconsfield survivors were given tickets and a song by the Foo Fighters when they went through their ordeal. Hope and the world's loving embraces are what these young men need to survive, in any case.

If Mr Infantino doesn't follow through... well, there may be a few of us ready to tell him what's what. ;)

Edited to fix my nemesis, bad grammar.

Diver killed in Thailand cave rescue made tragic vow as he joined mission

“Thailand cave rescue: Tragic ex-SEAL diver who died during mission had vowed "we will bring the kids home"

Saman Kunan, 38, had made the promise in a selfie video he recorded before boarding a flight and joining the operation.”

Snip

“See you this evening. We will bring the kids home."”

:(

Yes, I'm sure it was meant to bolster their spirits, but they will be in no physical condition to be going to Moscow on the 15th!
But next year. Next year...

“It remains to be seen whether this would be feasible but Musk has suggested that inserting “a 1m diameter nylon tube (or shorter set of tubes for most difficult sections)” through the cave network and “inflate with air like a bouncy castle” should create “an air tunnel underwater against cave roof and auto-conform to odd shapes like the 70cm hole”. This could potentially help pump the water and pave part of the way to make any future escape easier.“

If they could do that it would be amazing. Tie each boy to one or two divers and take them out floating. If they can do it without them having to be submerged I have far more hope.

I hope they can concentrate on draining that one very deep spot specifically. No need to totally drain it and make it a mountain climb for them. Just drain it so there is a few feet of headroom for everyone.

"48 HOURS

Rescuers said on Friday morning the rescue mission needed to be completed within 48 hours."

Yes. I think this is what was meant by knowing if they'd survive by the weekend. I don't recall who said that but it appears they knew their stuff. They clearly didn't believe the boys would survive until after monsoon season... and now I'm inclined to agree.

Devastated to hear a Navy SEAL died, shows how dangerous this mission is.

I don't know if it's been mentioned, but could they not drill DOWN into the cave floor to try and drain water that way, like a bath plug?

This image makes it simple. Critical 70cm area is at the center. Several dives and two rest areas in between before getting to strong 13 Thais. You probably need several inserts if going with air funnel solution pic.twitter.com/1Pz6vd7U4N

I have no idea if this level of activity is normal because I haven't watched the live feed before.

However a truck just backed up with maybe 2 generators? Air compressors? Pumps? Something like that in the back of the truck. They looked the most like air compressors to me. Unloaded one and then moved the truck again.

Dozens of army guys went jogging down the trail. (Maybe lunch time? They were carrying what looked like plastic grocery bags?)

I have not seen that mentioned. I'm guessing not because there isn't room under there and it would just bubble back up? I don't know.

Frankly, I think they need a few tons of good old fashioned dynamite, and blow the side off that sucker.

The National has posited four potential rescue options:

1. Drilling a sloped shaft

2. Finding a natural shaft (it must be said that no such shaft has yet been found)

3. Providing food and supplies to the boys so that they can wait months for the floodwaters to subside.

4. Diving and trekking out of the flooded cave.

Does something like this even exist? It would have to be extremely durable to not rip against the jagged cave walls, make holes and deflate.
Kevlar?
