Large, multi-agency search underway for missing girl in Kotzebue

A massive, multi-agency search is underway in the Northwest Alaska city of Kotzebue for a 10-year-old girl who vanished two days ago, officials said.

Ashley Johnson-Barr, 10, did not return home after going outside to play Thursday afternoon, said Clement Richards Sr., mayor of the Northwest Arctic Borough.

She was last seen at about 5:30 p.m. that day, at the Rainbow Park playground, the mayor said. Her family reported her missing when they couldn't find her.

The U.S. Coast Guard has flown two helicopters searching for Barr, including over waters outside the city of about 3,200 along the Chukchi Sea.

Alaska State Troopers are coordinating search efforts, using the borough's assembly chambers as an incident center, he said. The agency's incident management team arrived Saturday morning.

Volunteers on four-wheelers are scouring streets and the tundra outside the village. Other volunteers are operating boats and planes to help, the mayor said.

Northwest Arctic Borough

Arctic Circle Search and Rescue, the Northwest Arctic Borough Search and Rescue, AST, KPD and hundreds of volunteers are still actively searching for missing 10 year old, Ashley Johnson-Barr. Please exercise caution and respect around town, as most of the searchers are on foot and walking through yards and behind houses.
If you would like to volunteer with the search effort, please report to the NWAB Assembly Chambers. If you would like to donate hot food, please bring to the Cudd Hall, as this is where meals are being served. Snacks and drinks will be gladly accepted at the NWAB assembly chambers.
Taikuu to everyone who has volunteered already!

"The police department discovered that Ashley's cell telephone was located in the street by the NANA building, (100 Second Avenue) which is approximately half a mile from the park and in (the) opposite direction of her residence."

The assigned searches for tonight are completed for the night, however specific team members are still actively searching within town and the boundaries. If you would like to provide assistance this evening, any food is welcome at Cudd Hall, as they will be providing warm meals and beverages for the searchers still out there. Additionally, snacks and beverage donations for the searchers will be welcome at the borough tomorrow, and any hot meals can be brought to the Cudd Hall.
As like today, searching volunteers are encouraged to meet at the NWAB assembly chambers tomorrow morning at 10 am, where specific search areas will be assigned.
Again, taikuu for everyone who provided any form of assistance today, and for all who are keeping Ashley and her family in their thoughts and prayers.

Troopers write that the girl was last seen leaving Rainbow Park at 6 p.m. Thursday, wearing a pink sweater and jeans.

Leaving from where, was she on foot, bike or car. Does anyone know where she was headed? For those of us who aren't familiar with area, what it dark at that time? Also does anyone what was the weather like?

We get so little info these days it makes it really hard to help, especially when we aren't in a position to help search etc.

The sun set about 9:38pm according to my weather app.

I have attached a satellite screen cap of google maps. Rainbow Park is the green rectangle in the center. For reference only.

I am so worried about this little girl. I do not know much about Alaska other than from what I have seen on Alaska State Troopers reruns but they seem to be pretty close-knit in the smaller communities. Is this one like that?

Wikipedia references the US Census from 2010 and states the population as being 3201.

The area is about 28 square miles in total. After studying the map, there is a busy airport that flies passengers and cargo to Anchorage frequently at least twice, sometimes 3 times per day (did a quick kayak search). Other than the planes, it appears the only way on and off the island is by boat or possibly snowmobile in the winter.

This is a very small isolated community. Whoever has her, if indeed she was abducted, may know her.

Did her parents or one of her parent report her missing?

MOO

Good question. I am hoping this is a custody issue and nothing worse.
