The beautiful Viktoria Marinova was found murdered yesterday in a park in the Bulgarian city called Ruse. She had recently published an investigative article on corruption and the use by Bulgarian authorities of EU funds for their "private businesses" here.

I do not have much more to write, I am so in shock and saddened but I wanted to open a thread as soon as possible as this is getting out of control in Bulgaria and it is one of those countries nobody seems to be paying much attention to.

Links to the news in the British newspaper The Guardian and also a local paper.
RIP Viktoria. Sadly I know the person who did this to you will never get caught. He probably has friends in "all the right" places that will allow him to carry on with his life :(

Bulgarian journalist found brutally murdered in park
"The death was caused by blows on the head and suffocation, he added.

"Her mobile phone, car keys, glasses and part of her clothes were missing," Georgiev said, adding that prosecutors were probing all leads - both personal and linked to Marinova's job.

Interior Minister Mladen Marinov later confirmed to journalists that the victim had also been raped.

Prime Minister Boyko Borisov expressed hope that the investigation would succeed because of the "work that has been done. Thanks to the large amount of DNA material collected it is just a matter of time before the perpetrator will be found."
"Marinova was an administrative director of Ruse's small private TVN television and had recently launched a new current events talk show called "Detector".

The first episode of the show on September 30 broadcast interviews with investigative journalists Dimitar Stoyanov from the Bivol.bg website and Attila Biro from the Romanian Rise Project, about an investigation of alleged fraud with EU funds linked to big businessmen and politicians."
"We are in shock. In no way, under any form, never have we received any threats - aimed at her or the television," a journalist from TVN told AFP under condition of anonymity, adding that he and his colleagues feared for their safety."

If Borisov is saying this then there is no hope of an arrest. Everything that anyone needs to know about Borisov can be found in a CIA report leaked by Wikileaks (see Cable: 06SOFIA647_a ). A political , allied with fascists and a business partner of mafiosi - and that is the assessment of the US authorities!

And that is, unfortunately, a most accurate assessment.

"We are in shock. In no way, under any form, never have we received any threats - aimed at her or the television," a journalist from TVN told AFP under condition of anonymity, adding that he and his colleagues feared for their safety.

In a statement on their Facebook page, Bivol.bg insisted for police protection of Marinova's colleagues.

A journalist is killed on average every week around the world, according to figures compiled by RSF.

Among the most high-profile recent cases were Malta's anti-corruption blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia who died in a car bombing outside her home in October 2017, and top Slovak reporter Jan Kuciak who was shot dead with his fiancee at their home in February.

Bulgaria tumbled to 111th place in the annual RSF media freedom ranking in 2018 - the lowest among EU member states.

Bulgarian journalist murdered while on corruption investigation
"Marinova, who was a board member of the Ruse-based TV station TVN – one of the most popular TV channels in northeastern Bulgaria – is the third journalist to have been murdered in the European Union in a year. Local media reported that Marinova had recently been involved in covering an investigation by a group of Bulgarian journalists into companies involved in EU-funded infrastructure projects administered by local authorities.

Last October Daphne Caruana Galizia, Malta’s best-known investigative journalist, was killed when a powerful bomb blew up her car and Slovak journalist Jan Kuciak was shot dead in February."

To be honest, mafia is a serious organization and usually assassinated journalists and politicians are not raped. They are shot, they are poisoned, blown up, but raped? Leaving a lot of DNA at the day and age when everyone knows about DNA?

The fact that she was raped and they collected a lot of DNA indicates that they wanted to distract attention from the real killers. The DNA might have been placed intentionally, or those who ordered the killing made some hapless homeless guy rape her before someone killed her.

Television journalist's murder shocks Bulgaria
“We are in shock. In no way, under any form, never have we received any threats — aimed at her or the television,” a journalist from TVN told AFP under condition of anonymity, adding that he and his colleagues feared for their safety.

He described his colleague as “extremely disciplined, ambitious, always putting herself fully into what she is doing and a person with an extreme sense of justice.”

Bivol.bg owner Asen Yordanov however told AFP that his media had received credible information that its journalists were in danger of being assaulted because of the investigation that also appeared on Marinova’s show.

“Viktoria’s death, the brutal manner in which she was killed, is an execution. It was meant to serve as an example, something like a warning,” Yordanov added."

EU does not kick its members out.

"Bulgaria is a member of the European Union, NATO, and the Council of Europe; it is a founding state of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and has taken a seat at the UN Security Council three times."

With EU facing Brexit (although I suspect it will be mitigated to the extreme), least of all it is interested in other members leaving.

European commission and Germany urge Bulgaria to find journalist's killers
"The German government condemned the “brutal and dreadful murder” of Marinova and said it was imperative that “there is a fast investigation and that this horrible event will be illuminated as comprehensively as possible.”
“Physical attacks and death threats against journalists by criminal groups are especially common in Bulgaria,” said Reporters Without Borders, which compiles the World Press Freedom index. In its 2018 survey, the group described corruption and collusion between media, politicians and oligarchs in Bulgaria as widespread."

"Reporters Without Borders warned in 2017 about a suspected murder plot against a Bulgarian publisher, Georgi Ezekiev. Bulgarian journalists at Zov News and the Bivol website were investigating a drug-trafficking ring suspected of having links to police when they uncovered the alleged plan to murder Ezekiev, who publishes Zov News. One of the reporters involved in the investigation, Maria Dimitrova, received threatening messages by SMS and Facebook."

"The head of the Council of Europe, Thorbjørn Jagland, has called on the Bulgarian authorities “to rapidly conduct a thorough investigation of the horrific killing of investigative reporter Viktoria Marinova”.
