An arrest was made Wednesday afternoon during a search in the Calabasas and Malibu areas for an armed burglar wanted for questioning in the shooting death of camper, several law enforcement sources told NBC4.

The man was spotted walking through the brush near Mulholland Highway during an intensive search involving dozens of LA County Sheriff’s Department deputies and detectives.

A gun was found, the sources confirmed.

NBC4 obtained security video images of the wanted man recorded during a burglary in the early morning hours of Sunday, Sept. 30. It showed a man wearing a face mask and head lamp pulling the screen off of a window.

Calabasas Burglary Spree Suspect Arrested, Possibly Linked To Malibu Park Homicide

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department announced Wednesday night that 42-year-old Anthony Rouda was taken into custody in connection with the crime spree.

...

Sky9’s Stu Mundel reported from overhead and said there was a multitude of deputies — some undercover — and investigators on scene.

He said they were seen “with boxes and bags of evidence” hiking down from an area way above the Malibu Creek State Park.

It's a rather unusual step that they're blurring out his face. So much for people coming forward with more important evidence.

Also, the Tapia Park alert over the weekend involved a report of a man with 'scraggly' hair. This dude doesn't appear to fit that description. His hair - what we can see of it - looks like it's been cut recently. I would say that cuts against the 'survivalist' trope.

And as wacky as the Local can be, she predicted this turn of events last week, complete with the 'exclusive' to KNBC.

Not sure what's really going on here but I wouldn't be rushing back to the park to stay overnight in the campground.

A man dressed in black and carrying a rifle was arrested Wednesday near Malibu Creek State Park, where a camper was shot and killed as he slept in a tent in June, authorities said. A vast search involving Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies, a helicopter, search-and-rescue teams and detectives led to the arrest of Anthony Rauda, 42, Sheriff Jim McDonnell said at an evening news conference.

The search was prompted by a series of at least eight burglaries over the past two years in the Calabasas-Malibu area in which food was stolen from local buildings. But for now, Rauda, who has a long criminal history, was only being held for a parole violation, the sheriff said.

Investigators had not ruled out a link to the shooting at the wilderness park, and the rifle will undergo ballistic testing to determine if it was used in any crimes, the sheriff said.
Gunman arrested near Malibu park where camper was killed while with daughters

Southern California authorities on Wednesday arrested an armed man near the area where a father was gunned down during the summer while camping with his two young daughters in Malibu State Park.

Sheriff Jim McDonnell said investigators do not have enough information yet to link the man to the shootings at this point.

"We're not going to say … 'Yes, he is' or … 'No, he's not,'" McDonnell said. “We don’t have that information yet."

In all the cases Rouda has been linked to, food was stolen and the break-ins occurred between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. Authorities also said Rouda was caught on camera.
LASD Sheriff Jim McDonnell said a trail of footprints led detectives to Rouda in the Malibu Canyon wilderness.

“Investigators observed fresh boot prints on the ground leading up to a steep ravine approximately a mile north of Mullholland Highway and west of Las Virgenes Road,” McDonnell said. “With the assistance of air support, detectives followed the boot prints approximately 50 yards. Shortly after that, they heard movement amongst the brush followed by observing a male adult wearing black clothing walking quickly who resembled the suspect in the burglary.”

A criminal dressed in black, burglarizing buildings, living in the campground and carrying a rifle?

This is an insanely good lead.

And why aren't they asking the public for help by showing his face? Probably because they don't need our help.

The moment they saw him on video with a rifle, they probably had ballistics experts quickly determine whether the rifle seen on video could be connected to TB's shooting.

Why are the chances that a crazy, armed burglar living in the state park has nothing to do with the shootings? IMO, remote.

RIGHT. And now they can check that weapon and see if it is the one that killed that poor father. That doesn't take too long to match the bullets , etc.

I'm betting...yes.

I'm sure they could tell if it could be a match just from the video surveillance.
