Hundreds of mostly Honduran migrants began the long trek home on Saturday, some using free bus tickets from Central American authorities, while many more members of a stalled caravan remained in Guatemala at a tense border crossing with Mexico.

After clashes with Mexican riot police on Friday, some 650 migrants from the caravan made it into Mexico on the far side of a bridge over the Suchiate River, according to Mexican officials who said they were being registered.

Some 2,000 Honduran migrants were already back home after giving up on continuing to Mexico, Guatemala's President Jimmy Morales said at a press conference in Guatemala City alongside his Honduran counterpart,
President Juan Orlando Hernandez.

But Mexico had stepped up its efforts to stop the flow of people, migration experts said.

"Every time there's a [migrant] caravan there are police sent to the southern border ... but we've never seen anything as dramatic as we're seeing today," said Eunice Rendon, co-ordinator of migrant advocacy group Agenda Migrante.

"This has everything to do with Trump," she added.

A caravan of migrants, nearly all of them Hondurans, is making its way north through Guatemala toward Mexico and the United States. It is the latest, and certainly the largest, iteration of a phenomenon that has occurred from time to time: big groups of Central Americans joining together to face the challenges of migration, their numbers providing security against the criminals that stalk the route north.

But this one has drawn the ire of President Trump, who warned on Thursday that he would shut down the southwest border of the United States if Mexico did not halt the group. He also reiterated his threat that unless the governments of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador stopped the caravan’s progress, he would suspend foreign aid to them.

The migrant caravan was formed late last week in San Pedro Sula, a city in northern Honduras known for high levels of violence. It originally numbered fewer than 200 people — in line with most past caravans. But as word spread, the mobilization quickly grew. By the time the group had crossed the border into Guatemala, its members traveling by foot and vehicle, it had ballooned to more than 1,000.

With the caravan having already crossed into Guatemala, there was little the Honduran government could do to arrest its progress, though the administration of President Juan Orlando Hernández of Honduras deployed security forces to a main border crossing to try to prevent others from joining the migration. The Honduran government also urged citizens not to join the caravan, calling it a political mobilization aimed against the president.

Meanwhile, the Guatemalan government detained a former Honduran lawmaker who was traveling with the caravan, accusing him of failing to comply with immigration rules.

The Mexican immigration authorities have said that migrants with valid documents and visas will be allowed in, but that those who attempt to enter illegally will be detained and deported. Those seeking asylum or some other forms of protection can request it, but will have to wait in a detention center for as many as 45 days, officials said.

I can't really back this up with a link, but I believe I can factually state that these are humans fleeing their corrupt and dangerous home country, where there is no hope for any decent quality of life. Most humans have an innate will to survive and to protect their babies. I just can't fault anyone for that.

It will be politicized, of course. But something will have to give, one way or another. When people are powerless, hungry and afraid for their lives, they will and should take action. IMO.

We are a welcoming country and society, but we have laws, a border, and a method for people who are endangered to claim asylum.

Congress should change the laws, or they need to be enforced. Pretty black and white.

We have laws and NO ONE is promoting open borders. But our laws and the path to legal citezenship are antiquated and ineffective. It takes YEARS to become a legal US citizen. IMO, both parties are responsible for that. And both are responsible for allowing violent criminals to exist. Where are our law enforcement agencies? What are our tax dollars paying for?

The bigger question, right now, is how to fix it. These migrants are ALL endangered. Hard-working people who are seeking a better life. IDK how anyone could take issue with that.

Chanting and cheering migrants pushed through or climbed over a steel gate until police threw tear gas and smoke canisters and pushed the migrants back. Video showed coughing and weeping migrants collapsed on the bridge. Several police and an undetermined number of migrants were injured.

As night fell, thousands of migrants remained packed together and exposed to the elements on the Suchiate River bridge connecting Tecun Uman, Guatemala, and Tapachula, Mexico, according to CNN crews on the ground.

It is 100% legal to enter the USA seeking asylum.

Under federal law, anyone from another country can seek asylum — and therefore entry into the U.S. — by claiming to have fled their countries out of fear of persecution over their race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group.

Mexico has the misfortune to lie directly between South America’s coca fields and the United States, the world’s biggest drug market. The drugs trade created criminal gangs who fight over turf and kill those who try to stop them doing business.

Guns, easily bought in the United States, flow back into Mexico. Weak law enforcement lets gangsters kill with virtual impunity. Some scholars think the rise of democracy at the end of the last century broke up truces between criminals and the ruling party, spurring more conflict and violence.

As gangs wreaked havoc, Felipe Calderón, president from 2006 till 2012, sent the army to defeat them, unleashing an unprecedented wave of violence. Enrique Peña Nieto, who took office in 2012, vowed to halve the murder rate—and it did drop during the first few years of his tenure.

But three new trends have brought the violence up to new levels. First, the capturing of “kingpins” has left gangs fragmented, undisciplined and prone to fighting among themselves.

These fissures have helped spur the second trend: diversification. Gangs look beyond drug-trafficking and into activities like extortion, kidnapping and—especially—the theft of fuel from pipelines.

These new lines of work are just as bloody as the old ones.

Sounds to me that these migrants want to come to America for economic reasons and not because of persecution or personal safety. Asylum would be denied if that is the case. JMO.

The asylum program has become strained in recent years as illegal immigrants, coached by smuggling cartels and relatives who’ve already made it to the U.S., have learned the “magic words” to game the system.

Another Migrant Caravan Is Making Its Way to The U.S

The Honduran caravan consists of families and children and individuals trying to escape violence and poverty in their home country. For Henry Tejeda, one of those people traveling, he left his wife and children, in order to escape the violence after his mother was murdered and brother was shot.

“I am carrying the documents to prove I’m not lying,” Tejeda said, according to the Associated Press. “I want to seek political asylum (in the United States) and help my family.”
