I know nothing about guns at all. I would think having a serial number on the shell casings would be helpful and deter crime, but doubt that will happen in our life time. Someone with better understanding could chime in.
Don't know about that but we did discuss the possibility of prints on them, if the killer wasn't wearing gloves when he loaded the gun.

I think that may be very different than night vision cameras. night vision does some strange things. moo
Some night vision cameras are in colour as per my google search, unless I misunderstood what I read. It’s not out of the realm of possibility they have color footage perhaps from the casino (they’d have very good cameras I bet!).

They're tools. Different ones for different jobs. You don't cut wood with a screw driver, and you don't use a saw to turn a screw. :)

see though this is where personality comes in. I do use kitchen cutting items to cut small trees if I really need to and I know I have a preference for a firearm that wouldn't be in the average and I have personal reasons for why and some close to me know what my reasoning is....

I know when some guns are bought new they come with a ballistics bullet, I have always wondered if the manufacture logs that ballistics info with serial num.

I've bought a few new firearms. None came with a ballistics bullet, but one did come with a target used to fire the gun to show accuracy (quality control). You have me wondering now if the manufacturer kept that round and logged my serial number with it.

Mountain_Kat, I feel your pain!

First - I keep thinking: what's the likelihood of there being a family get together..then this happens...and it's not connected...?

Second: that darn 911 call.....just makes me....have all sorts of plain silly thoughts.....

So, as someone who doesn’t really know much about guns, I do believe I understand a shot gun sprays pellets. Can someone explain? TIA.

unless it has a riffled barrel and a slug is used or a slug is used in a reg barrel. there are also speciality rounds that spray pellets and have a slug, the choke controls the spread pattern of the spray of pellets

Although on the first day it was reported that the sheriff said they were bullet casings, according to WAEU 13. Several posters have questioned if LE would have used that term if was a shot gun that was used. I asked about it several threads ago but I dont know if anyone answered.

That's right. We did talk about this before. I wondered if the Sheriff actually used the word "casings" or if the reporter used the word based on interpretation. I think someone provided the video clip but I don't recall the outcome. Maybe he did say casings.

Can I just say this before I burst ? I am really having the worst time getting past the panty stealer. I know LE cleared him of any involvement in this crime, and I know they had good reasons for doing so, but seriously...what the hell are the odds of that kind of wacky crime happening in the very same home where 2 people were brutally murdered and their daughter abducted ? It's so friggin' weird that I keep catching myself coming back to this guy again and again, and each time I have to snap myself back to reality and remind myself that this guy was cleared by LE.

UGH !

It would have bothered me had his theft preceded the invasion and murders.

Coming, as it did, after the well publicized events, I find it easier to see him as someone who's personal issues were triggered by exposure to the case, leading to a lack of impulse control or obsession around the case.

Not to mention I'm sure there is a swamp somewhere in which the articles stolen bring a big payday.

There are different types, sizes of shot gun shells too. Some common ones are for birds/small game, those have different size pellets or like BB's inside, called: "Bird-shot". "Buck-shot" have less, but larger pellets/BB's. Then you have "slugs". Those typically are one large chunk of metal.

. They do spray but at close range you can’t even tell.. also depends if it’s a birdshot or 00 buck or slug.. here’s a close range shot. Kinda, definitely closer range videos than this.

I still believe this was random and the Closs family just happened to be home. I don't think anyone was the intended target. 12:30 am on a Sunday - pretty sure my family is in bed even if someone is working the night shift - no worries, they will come in and lock up. We do it all the time. BUT if I hear a door being broken down and gun shots (in my HOUSE) in the middle of the night, I "think" & hope I would try to divert the situation to me in order to protect my kid(s) by yelling/screaming and telling them to RUN (maybe what is on 911 call & why they say Jamye was there at the time of the murders). My best guess, & with very little to go on, would be that Jayme did as her parents instructed and ran but was caught outside, put in a car and removed from the scene knowing the 911 call had been placed. Time will tell - hopefully.

I agree, Really I feel like this is the most reasonable explanation.

. Again Maine.. I should have looked at the quotes before I quoted .. ;)

Posting as it may be helpful to others. I've had to go back and listen for info several times so decided to put it in writing. Let me know if I've made a mistake.

It was in an article so it was a reporter who wrote that he said it. I wonder if the reporter would have made the mistake? I don't know how common it is to make that kind of error. I might but I would think a reporter would get it right. Especially since it was a summary of what the sheriff said in an interview.

Let's go back to the camera footage of the 2 cars. How likely is it that anyone living on that highway would have a camera focused on the highway? Aren't the houses set back a fair distance? The police are interested in a relatively short section of highway. Maybe they didn't really make a clean getaway. Maybe the responding officers actually passed these car as they headed to the crime scene? If that's the case were the perps headed east...back towards town? My apologies if this has already been addressed...

Good questions. As to the BBM-- the first 14 mile search along HWY 8 was to the west, away from town. It seems odd LE would search in that direction first if the cars were seen going east from the house. That said, I suppose it is possible a county patrol vehicle was to the west of town already when the call came in and passed the cars on the way to the scene. I was recently searching for something definitive saying Barron County Sheriff's vehicles have dashboard cameras that are always on but I did not find that info yet (maybe someone else has?). JMO.

Has anybody scene actual footage or photos of the 2 cars in question? Are we dealing with descriptions LE is providing of the cars they passed? Why not show the public the footage/photos?

I would think more eyes could only help...like what if that muscle car had non-OEM wheels or other unique features

For some reason they are keeping those videos under wraps and have chosen to release stock images instead. I have previously speculated that it is possible the vehicles have something that makes them unique-- a dent or a small aftermarket feature the owner has added. These may be things that are not readily visible to most witnesses seeing a car from a distance or driving down the road, but could have been picked up on video enhanced by the FBI. One reason to not release this info is that say for example there is a visible dent on the top of the car near the driver's side-- if LE reveals they have clear enough video to make out a dent the car owner may be motivated to get that dent fixed. Then the evidence showing that it is the right car is gone.

In the Yingying Zhang case they did release the actual images of the car and the vehicle had a small defect visible in one of the hubcaps. Police did not point out that defect in the release of info, but some of our sleuths here noticed it. IIRC, someone called in the car based on it being the right model car and parked in their apartment complex in the same town where YingYing was abducted. That small defect in the hubcap was an immediate verification for LE that they had the right car/right suspect and they put him under heavy surveillance once they found him. I think if LE had pointed out the hubcab when releasing the images then the suspect would have had an opportunity to fix it. Because the info was only really found buried in the YingYing threads here (and was only our specualtions that there even was a defect in the blurry video) the suspect had no way of knowing if LE had been able to clean up the video enough to note that defect-- he wasn't tipped off about it and probably wasn't even thinking about it.

It may seem like a good idea to tell people to look for certain features, but on the other hand, most people are not going to notice something small like that when driving or walking and seeing a car pass them (they are not looking at a car frame-by-frame in slow motion in their minds like we have the advantage of doing when a video is released); Witnesses might not call a car in as a tip if they were unable to see a specific feature on it that they know LE is looking for. For these reasons, and probably other investigative reasons, I think LE might not want to release the videos. JMO.

Taking that thought one step further, releasing the actual photos would reveal the location of the camera. I wouldn’t think LE would want that revealed.

Another good point for why they might not release the video. They said these videos came from homes and businesses in the area. There is no reason to reveal their exact sources while the case is big in the press and potentially aide criminals in avoiding those routes in the future. Or potentially make private homeowners who gave LE their videos targets of revenge for helping the police. JMO.

I would say pretty great for a weird dude that likes to break in and steal teens panties. He has a history of it. Look at it from his viewpoint. The house was released, he knew nobody was living there, and he could pretty well bet Jayme's under garments were still there.

Le needs to bring all of this up again...keep reminding people until solved.

I bought one new one that came with a ballistics bullet and one that came with a target (like what you're describing). Most of my guns, though, are purchased secondhand and some are very old (some of my collector items are from the WWII era, and one even goes back to the Civil War).I don't know many people who purchase new firearms around here. It's mostly pawn shops and from gun shows. Sometimes from friends.
