BASE AUCKLAND CENTRAL BACKPACKERS $54 ($̶7̶6̶) - Updated 2018 Prices & Hostel Reviews - New Zealand - TripAdvisor

Some poor reviews ranging from fire hazard, to nightclub noise from club nearby, to shady people sleeping on beanbags in common areas/reception. There seems to be a common theme here for the most part that this is not the best in accommodations. It is a hostel, that I get. But safety and cleanliness should still be offered, imo. Many people reported that they checked out sooner than planned. Wonder if Grace did the same, though that would not explain her lack of contact with family.

Daughter of a millionaire. Hmm. And staying in an $86/night semi rundown hostel? If it was known who she is, could there be a ransome request? I guess that would have happened by now. Imo

“It has since been revealed that Grace Millane, who has been in New Zealand for about two weeks, is the daughter of a millionaire property developer, David Millane, the Daily Mail reported.”

For many young travellers, they want the experience of meeting other travellers. They prefer the hostel regardless of money and other options.

So she stopped responding Thursday, yet was seen Saturday night? If that’s correct, cutting off contact seems intentional, though there are still many possible outcomes of that act.

Anyone notice that on her FB someone commented on her profile picture 6 days ago and Grace liked it?

I wonder if she's been missing since Saturday night in NZ, meaning Friday late afternoon/night in the US? If so, does her 'like' 6 days ago date back to after they last heard from her? My brain isn't working with the math right now, just thought I'd throw it out there in case someone wants to try to make sense of it

Auckland is 13 hours ahead of GMT (UK time). So;

Grace last had contact with:
- family Thursday UK/Friday NZ.
- Roommate Saturday 1st December am NZ/Friday evening UK.

Grace was seen on CCTV at SKYCITY Saturday 1st December 19.15pm NZ/06.15am UK.

On reading a couple of the articles, it seems the last contact she had is debateable...

Michael added: "Thursday was the last time we spoke to Gracie, we speak daily. We're still appealing for information."
He wrote: "She has not returned to her hostel room in Auckland New Zealand and family members have had no contact since Saturday 1st December.

Worryingly, her belongings are confirmed to have been left in her room.

There is also a paragraph about a witness claiming to have seen Grace at Manukau approx 14 miles from SKYCITY altho it doesnt state what time.

I considered that to be the case. Also the feelings of adventure and independence. She obviously had other options though, if any overnight venue didn't suit her. Perhaps she didn't find this particular hostel to be as disastrous as some (most) of the Trip Advisor reviews have stated.

Hostels aren't that much money. My daughter has been staying in hostels in Europe since May and hasn't paid more than $30 a night for a hostel bed and that was in Sweden.

I see now what you are referring to. The $86 you referred to is for a private room, and it's about $20 a night for a hostel bed.

CCTV footage shows Millane at her last known sighting at 7.15pm on 1 December at an entertainment complex, Sky City.

She later failed to return to her hostel room, raising alarm bells. Grace was wearing a black dress with white trainers at the time of her disappearance.

Gotcha. I knew I read $86 per night. And I did consider that was actually pretty pricey for a hostel.

Good luck to your daughter. What an adventure she must be having. Scary for us moms when the kids travel. Kudos to you for "enduring" it.

Father of missing British backpacker Grace Millane arrives in Auckland

[...]

Detective Inspector Scott Beard said her father, David Millane, arrived in the country just after 7am.

He was met by police at the airport and was being supported by them today.

He would be speaking to media this afternoon at 4pm, at a press conference at Auckland Central Police Station.

Overnight, officers had continued to gather and review CCTV footage from throughout the central Auckland area, Beard said.
