I suppose at the end of the day we do not know what caused her death only possibilities of how the asphyxiation and superficial wounds to the facial area may have occurred. I inputted the crab possibility as that they feed in the lake we use to keep a crab trap at the end of the pier the bait was turkey necks. Drop the trap and in a couple of hours pull it up and you have a dozen crabs. I know it was a bit of a gruesome thought I injected there ... my apologizes but it was something that came to mind.

I also completely forgot another item of note her head was covered with a plastic bag so the wounds most likely occurred before the plastic bag was placed over head.

All thou Mary M does note in her book a Trail of Bones that LPJD had been strangled before being placed in the lake. That leads me to believe the she was murdered by someone potentially a significant other. Detective Dema also stated that she was possibly murdered due to the pregnancy. In all what lead to her death is still open ended and could be numerous possibilities.

The bag according to AMW was found on her head, but not secured to it. I think the wounds are from Marine Life, and she was doing a “nude swim.” I am probably wrong, but this is my speculation.

Circumstances/Investigation:
LPJD was spotted by (2) fishermen at approximately 7:30 pm on the evening of 6/19/86 near the community of North Shore. By the time deputies launched a boat to recover the partially submerged body drifted approximately 40 yd. (120 ft.) east of the I-10 twin span bridges and 50-60 yd. (150-180 ft.) from shore.

She was nude with a white plastic bag over her head secured with duct tape and a 22lb. red weight (type used on exercise equipment) tied to her neck. Investigators found several superficial wounds on the woman’s face/head but were unsure what caused them.

Information from weather experts and marine biologist has led detectives to believe the body was put into the lake between Bayou Lacombe and Rigolets Pass.

There were no serial numbers on the breast implants. Investigators consulted New Orleans plastic surgeons for assistance where the size and manufacturer were determined. It was also advised that most plastic surgeons in the New Orleans area use larger implants.

The implant manufacturer Cox-Uphoff spokesman provided the Sherriff’s office a list of plastic surgeons around the country who have ordered the 200cc size implant. Cox-Uphoff spokesman said the size is common in the US and estimated 500-700 doctors across the country order the 200cc size every year. Detectives have called or written 175 physicians for help. When you go out of this area it begins to get lost doctors way up in the Northeast of the country may not be as helpful to assist.

The medical pathologist that performed the autopsy determined she died of asphyxiation. However, could not pinpoint whether death was by drowning, suffocation or strangulation. Her blood contained small amounts of caffeine and alcohol. Her body bore evidence of several minor cuts and blows, all superficial and was unsure what caused them. He estimated she died the day before her body was found (Sometime Wednesday June 18th). LPJD bore small old scars, right knee, right wrist and upper abdomen.

St Tammany LE received a report on Wed-6/18 that a caller reported deputies would be told where to find (2) bodies beneath an interstate highway bridge if they met a man at the state tourist information center on I-10 West of Slidell. Deputies found no one at the rest area, a search of bridges on I-10 and I-59 turned up no bodies.

Inspector Harvey Pratt of the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigations examined morgue photos of the woman’s face and painted over them to produce a likeness of her. She was a young attractive woman w/shoulder length auburn hair swept back from her face.

St Tammany LE investigation produced 200 inquiries from around the country but few strong leads to her identity. A description of LPJD is filed in an FBI computer in Washington. Sheriff’s office spokesperson Tiffany Tate said based on the attention the case has been given locally in the past “it is obvious the woman is not from this area”.

The remains of LPJD were exhumed in Sept 2003 to acquire DNA samples to compare to Lisa Marie Sexton a teenager missing from Elyria, Ohio since May 1981. Testing was completed, however Lisa Marie Sexton and LPJD were not a match.

In February 2005 America’s Most Wanted featured the case of Lake Pontchartrain Jane Doe in hopes to identify. The airing of her story provided numerous tips, however did not result in the identification of LPJD.

Right Hip Compound Fracture:
LPJD must have incurred an immense amount of pain and a lengthy recovery period. During the recovery period a patient would need to use a walker or crutches for several months and attend physical therapy. Many of these types of injuries require surgery that include the usage of pins in the procedure. The injury was not recognized until LPJD was exhumed would pins deteriorate if LPJD had any at all ?

Right Hip Compound Fracture:
Broken Hip/Fracture occurs in the upper portion of your thighbone or femur. The top of the femur and part of the pelvic bone meet to form the hip.

Compound Fracture:
A fracture in which the broken bones cut through the skin. This type of fracture is more prone to infection and requires immediate medical attention.

Hip Fractures:
Common injuries after a front end accident. Due to the force of an accident can push up the leg to the hip and break the hip near the pelvis.

How fractures can occur: High-Energy forces; motor vehicle accidents, pedestrian struck by a vehicle, bicycling / motorcycle accidents or falling from a significant height.

Surgical:
Most hip injuries require surgery to repair the hip. Surgery is done as soon as possible after a hip fracture. Certain fractures that have not moved “displaced” may not require surgery. Because there is a risk that they may move later on they are often fixed. After surgery a common issue is leg length discrepancy a shoe lift may be needed to equalize the limb length.

Recovery:
Patient will not be fully weight-bearing for several months. Crutches, walker or a cane will be needed to aid mobilization.

Mary noted it was an old injury, the appearance of the bone was changing.

The autopsy revealed that she died from asphyxiation and was dead when she went into the lake. It also found that she was seven to 12 weeks pregnant and had small breast implants.

Using clay, Barrow rebuilt the woman's face on the skull following guidelines set by Manhein's analysis of it.

" We're never absolutely sure it's an exact duplicate, " Barrow said. " But it's much closer than a composite police sketch and they are close enough to be easily recog-nized. "

Manhein's examination of the skeleton provided another clue that may identify the woman. Manhein found that the woman had fractured both hips as an adult.

" An injury like that would have been enormously painful, " Manhein said. " She would have been laid up for some time, in great pain and most likely under the care of a doctor. That could be a big clue to identifying her. "

Such an injury would prob-ably come from a major acci-dent or serious fall, Manhein said.

Authorities listed the woman as between 18 and 30. But Manhein determined that the woman, who was about 5- foot-4 and weighed from 110 to 120 pounds, was probably 24 or 25 years old. Bones are open-ended as a person grows. The woman's bones were mostly capped, including the clavicle or collar bone, which is the last in the body to be capped, she said.

" The clavicle was in the process of closing when she was killed, " Manhein said. " So she was much closer to 25 than to 18 or 30. " Demma also knows the woman had perfect teeth, well aligned and without a single cavity, and her wisdom teeth had been removed. She had no tattoos and no scars. YW BOH.. It was a severe injury as noted LPJD most likely would have been off of her feet and under medical care for a period of time.

It is a significant clue as noted the bone was in the process of healing when she was found. From what I have read it generally takes 3 - 9 years for the bone to fully heal so that gives a open range of possibility of when the injury may have occurred.

Agreed I find the call all to eerie esp given the date in which is the same estimated day as when LPJD died. There was no further mention of this call after July

Unsure if LE had caller ID and tracing back in 1986 if so I would believe they would have followed up on the call. Tracing it back to where it came from whether it was a home line or pay phone. We did have pay phones back then (LOL) now .. an ancient memory .. ( LOL)

They may have had that technology by some other means, but most likely they did not have those features on the phone line through the phone company. Caller ID was in its infancy in 1986 and just starting to roll out in bigger markets. However, the phone company should have been able to trace the call from the switch, that ability has been around forever.

She was drifting east of the I-1o twin span bridges. Could the caller have seen her and in a odd way calling it in. But why stating 2 body's.....strange...maybe they messed up the message and the caller said I saw a body near (the) two bridges....naaahhhh I don't know.

Inspector Harvey Pratt of the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigations examined morgue photos of the woman’s face and painted over them to produce a likeness of her. She was a young attractive woman w/shoulder length auburn hair swept back from her face.

St Tammany LE investigation produced 200 inquiries from around the country but few strong leads to her identity. A description of LPJD is filed in an FBI computer in Washington. Sheriff’s office spokesperson Tiffany Tate said based on the attention the case has been given locally in the past “it is obvious the woman is not from this area”.

The remains of LPJD were exhumed in Sept 2003 to acquire DNA samples to compare to Lisa Marie Sexton a teenager missing from Elyria, Ohio since May 1981. Testing was completed, however Lisa Marie Sexton and LPJD were not a match.

In February 2005 America’s Most Wanted featured the case of Lake Pontchartrain Jane Doe in hopes to identify. The airing of her story provided numerous tips, however did not result in the identification of LPJD.

Exhumed:
09/04/03 – Exhumed for DNA/Dental matching to Lisa Marie Sexton, it was not a match.
Mary Manhein kept LPJD’s remains at LSU Faces laboratory in the event additional DNA would be needed for MP comparisons in the future.

Right Hip Compound Fracture:
LPJD must have incurred an immense amount of pain and a lengthy recovery period. During the recovery period a patient would need to use a walker or crutches for several months and attend physical therapy. Many of these types of injuries require surgery that include the usage of pins in the procedure. The injury was not recognized until LPJD was exhumed would pins deteriorate if LPJD had any at all ?

Right Hip Compound Fracture:
Broken Hip/Fracture occurs in the upper portion of your thighbone or femur. The top of the femur and part of the pelvic bone meet to form the hip.

Compound Fracture:
A fracture in which the broken bones cut through the skin. This type of fracture is more prone to infection and requires immediate medical attention.

Hip Fractures:
Common injuries after a front end accident. Due to the force of an accident can push up the leg to the hip and break the hip near the pelvis.

How fractures can occur: High-Energy forces; motor vehicle accidents, pedestrian struck by a vehicle, bicycling / motorcycle accidents or falling from a significant height.

Surgical:
Most hip injuries require surgery to repair the hip. Surgery is done as soon as possible after a hip fracture. Certain fractures that have not moved “displaced” may not require surgery. Because there is a risk that they may move later on they are often fixed. After surgery a common issue is leg length discrepancy a shoe lift may be needed to equalize the limb length.

Recovery:
Patient will not be fully weight-bearing for several months. Crutches, walker or a cane will be needed to aid mobilization.

Mary noted it was an old injury, the appearance of the bone was changing.

Using a formula that uses the femur bone help Manhein and her staff conclude the victim was between 5’2” – 5’4” original reports stated the victim was between 5’7” – 5’8”.

I just don't get it. This woman has SO MANY identifiable characteristics that I am truly baffled to why she is still unidentified after 32 years! This makes me wonder, though, if she was not even from the US, but perhaps a turist? Has this angle been discussed before? (if it has, I apologise; it's been a long time since I read through the whole thread ). I'll try to explain as well as I can. All apologies for any bad wording (or spelling!).

I thought about her hip injuries, her plastic surgery, and her husband/S.O., trying to add the little things that bothered me together. It is a bit lengthy. Please be patient.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't her medical needs and doings leave one helluva paper trail at an insurance company? She was well maintained, had had plastic surgery once or twice (breast and nose), and I suppose recovery and rehabilitation are quite expensive. She was either well off ("well maintained", remember?), had good coverage, or in crippling debt. Surely, someone must've noticed that someone suddenly stopped paying down their debt, or stopped paying their good insurance, right? Please, enlighten me if I got this completely wrong! This is just another reason why I don't get why she hasn't been identified yet.

However, if she was European (or from Oceania or South America, but I do not know how things work out there), she would most likely been covered by the univeral healthcare, which has exsisted in most European countries after WW2. Even her plastic surgery could've been covered if it affected her health somehow. She could also have been a "medical refugee". Cox Uphoff International (CUI) went bankrupt in the mid-80s, I believe, but I haven't been able to find out how widespread they were.

About her significant other (if we are to believe he's involved): I have this scenario in my head that he perhaps felt he got more than he bargained for when LPJD got her injuries + the long recovery period. I know that it takes a lot of and from you to take care of a sick person over a longer period of time (I've been there myself), and I can imagine the annoucement of the pregnancy could've been the straw that broke the camel's back. It was an old injury, wasn't it? Does it say anywhere how old?

But why New Orleans? you may ask by now. Well, we Europeans have a romanticised idea of NOla, I suppose; Swamps, lavish Southern mansions, jazz, and Mardi Gras all year around.. One of those places you must visit at least once in your lifetime. Could it be that LPJD and S.O. thought in similar fashion, and S.O. either saw his opportunity before or during their trip? The pregnancy could have led to her murder (if it was known to her that she was with child, but she was 8-12 weeks along, so I assume she knew), and it would be somewhat easy for S.O. to come up with a *advertiser censored* and bull story on why LPJD didn't come back home with him (decided to stay behind, got a job, left him, etc.). Remember, this was in 1986, and staying connected to people far away could be quite a hassle.

Is all this too far-fetched? What are your thoughts?

Army wife also makes sense. I agree, there's a lot to digest.. I do, however, have LPJD in the back of my mind whenever I search through non-American mps from the 70s/80s.
