Deputies responded to a residence on Highway 8 east of Barron that was asking for help shortly before 1 a.m. When deputies arrived, they found two deceased adults. Jayme Closs, 13, is considered "missing and endangered." Jayme is described as 5' tall, 100 pounds and has green eyes and blond or strawberry blond hair.

Monday, October 15
12:58 a.m. – Barron Co. receives 911 call from 1268 Hwy. 8. Nobody speaks back to dispatchers.
– Deputies find James and Denise dead from gunshots. Daughter Jayme is missing
– FBI, DCI arrive at home on Highway 8. Search of the area begins

6:56 a.m. – Sheriff’s Dept. puts out notice on social media and to local media of missing teen.
– Sheriff’s Dept. interviews school staff at Riverview Middle School – where Jayme attends.

3:23 p.m. – AMBER Alert is sent out for Jayme.

In no way will we allow ANYONE to suggest that a minority group, a gang, the Nazi's or a coven of witches are the ones who killed Jayme's parents and kidnapped her.

If anyone hints, talks around or in anyway suggests a group is responsible for this horrible crime that person will be gone from the discussion. Same thing if you mention anyone as a suspect without evidence.

If any reliable information comes out about the suspect or suspects then, of course, we can discuss the new information.

In Jayme's case, there is no reason to disparage the parents or Jayme. There is no evidence of any issues with Jayme's parents or with Jayme herself.

  • The Smrekars reported hearing two high-powered gunshots after 12:30 a.m. Monday. [2]
  • “I hear one shot and the second shot was even louder yet,” Joan Smrekar said. [26]
  • “It actually sounded like a car backfiring or something quite large,” her husband Tom Smrekar added. [26]
  • "JOAN SMREKAR, CLOSS` NEIGHBOR: We had come home about 11:30. We went to bed about quarter after 12:00. We were not sleeping and we heard the first shot and just a couple seconds is the second shot. And I asked my husband, I said, were those gunshots? Because they were so loud? And he said, yes, and he said, it`s a big gun and I rolled over and looked at the time on my clock, and it said 12:38. My clock is off by seven minutes per the Sheriff`s department, so this happened roughly around 12:30." [27]

    • Believed to be brought to/from the scene by the Medical Examiner based on the ME carrying it, not wearing gloves, placing it on the ground, etc.

    • Captioned by Daily Mail as "what appeared to be a rifle bag, a rake and several duffel sized bags" [25]
    • Some think they are rifle bags which could have been removed from the home. Others have mentioned they are unlikely to be evidence from the home as the officers are not handling them with gloves.
    • Another theory is that the bag contains a metal detector, and the rakes could have been used in searching or clearing brush while using the metal detectors. Further detail in this post by rainynights
  • No gun was found at the scene [1]
  • It is unclear if Jayme took any of her personal items with her. Fitzgerald said he was working on gathering information if she had a phone or other items she would have definitely taken with her. [16]
  • Multiple rounds were “spent” [18]
  • The family’s dog was alive inside the residence when deputies responded [18]

    • They may pay too much or too little attention to the progress of this investigation that seems out of the ordinary. They may try to find new information about the investigation or, they may quickly turn off the news and social media or try to redirect conversations about the victims or their families.

• The search for Jayme Closs has continued to intensify and serious unrelated criminal activity was uncovered in the Barron area and law enforcement action was deemed necessary [3]

If Jayme turns up alive (hopefully) or not, she and/or her family may one day read your posts. Be sure that you are comfortable with that thought. As @Tricia frequently reminds us, words have power. While it is NOT okay at all to state that Jayme is definitely responsible for any part of this crime or her disappearance, we are allowing members to state their opinion that Jayme could be involved in her own disappearance. This does NOT include blaming members of Jayme's family, such as her aunts or grandparents.

I would also add that you must own your opinions one way or the other in this or any other case. If you are of the opinion that Jayme could have been involved somehow and another poster disagrees with you, DO NOT complain to the moderators that others are bullying you because they disagree. But DC posted quite a few pics of Jayme on her FB. Is it likely that someone stalked Jayme through Mom's FB? Anyone have an opinion on that?

So since it seems likely this went down with a handgun (I was in the shotgun camp until more recent stories def show it it was casings and not shells found at the scene), is the report of bullet holes on the front door possible? I think a reporter said that... anyone have a link? TIA.

ETA: there may have been a backdoor taken out of the home as well, based on some information and pics shared here (the Halloween stickers). Does make me consider a duo, and not a lone intruder. IMO.

I think it can’t be ruled out. I am leaning toward an inside job, and it would be hard to rule out any FB connection.

Someone may repost the pics- it was very intriguing. The sliding class doors didn’t exactly match the pumpkin clings on the door carried out by the technicians. Thinking it was a backdoor with similar pumpkin clings, but don’t know. That is important, IMO.

I think youre correct. Theres a photo of the side patio door (prior to the incident) also with Halloween stickers. It looks very similar to the door we seen them carrying, but I dont think it was the same.

Perp has any familiarity with guns or hunter .. killing two in 5 -10 seconds is not surprising .. especially if there visible against door your trying to enter..or right inside door.

I wish I knew more about ballistics/penetration. I've no doubt at close range some rounds can penetrate the door, but would they still have the velocity needed to kill a person on the other side after going through a 2 inch think wood door? I think of shotguns as being primarily useful aiming at the jam, strike plate, setscrews, handles, locking mechanism, hinges or other hardware components in order to facilitate the breach.

I have lots of target practice training on paper, cardboard, steel and even bowling pins, but door breach, 2 inch thick wood, etc. is above my paygrade

Found it - Go to page 21 of this thread (#28), theres a post by elektroangel with 3 photos. It shows the patio door. I hate to repost them because its not confirmed to be the same door that was taken. But thats why another door was mentioned. Hope that helps.

I know it's a poor area but I am surprised yo see the kids aren't all supplied with chromebooks from the school. I don't know of a school around my area that doesn't give each kid a chromebook in 7 grade and they keep it for future years.

According to officer 325 at 1:05 am states multiple “rounds” spent. “Round” is a general term for any type of firearm projectile that is nonspecific, therefore pistol, rifle, or shotgun could have been used. PD uses the term bc it is nonspecific, however if they had used the term “brass” that narrows things down a bit. A bullet riddled door...I’m going with shotgun.
