Well, seems like they didn't have a clear enough view of it to release details, it wasn't a tactical move not to release it.

Barron County sheriff: Not enough information to pull over Jake Patterson, search for car

'Fitzgerald said Tuesday that the passing car was discussed during the investigation, but they didn't feel they had enough information to alert the public to it. It was dark, and police were traveling fast, so it was difficult to determine the make, model and other details, he said.

“We didn’t have any specific information about that car," he said. '

Well that answers that.

(ETA: and no worthy dashcam images I suppose)

Possibly some kind of FBI profiling. I was wondering if the forensic investigators were able to find the glue from the duck tape on JC's mom's fingers? Could this have been a clue that JC had been bound and taken away?
Wow - I wonder if DC purposefully fumbled with the duct tape to get some evidence on her knowing he likely was going to kill her to take JC? Like when someone scratches to get their DNA under their fingernails? I'm sure she was incredibly frightened but if she was thinking this way - I am in awe (JMO).

I too have mixed feelings - I think their (JP family) expression of sympathy for the JC family is enough at this point. They (JP family) should not do any more interviews or publicize anything IMO. I would hope the JC family is reading anything that is addressed to her prior to letting her see it -JMO. She really does not need anything added to her stress IMO. If I were the guardian I would not allow anything from his family in my home. but that is just me - I am assuming they are being guided by professionals in her recovery IMO.
eta: spelling clarification

They did show on the news that her aunt* is opening all the mail sent to the PO Box and reading everything before taking it to Jayme. So I think they are aware enough and being careful of what she sees. But I feel weird about the father of JTP sending a letter. It just doesn't feel appropriate at this point. He should say what he wants to say through the press. JMO. And maybe I'm wrong.

ETA link: Packages start arriving offering love and support to Jayme Closs

*Oops, link says a friend of the family who set up the PO box, not the aunt, was the one opening the packages and screening things.

Maybe they didn't have any specific information about that car but a neighbor could've filmed it on security cam. The town all knew there was a kidnapping, but pleading/reminding neighbors to check their cameras was what led to a break in the Mollie Tibbetts case.

I haven't read anything since Monday night, but I just want to say that I can't imagine the pain and grief JP's father feels for having been in the house on multiple occasions. I know people want to blame him for things we know (and don't know) about JP's upbringing, but very few people would expect their child to do what JP did. I think it's fine to write a letter to the Closs family; it is up to them if they want to read it. He must need some way to express his feelings and I think it says a lot that he was sobbing during the court appearance on Monday.

He was visiting his mom the day Jayme escaped.

Yes. Based on reporting so far, he was visiting his mother. Doesn’t mean he liked her. But that’s the deal.

As per CC, he says he went to Haugen. Which is the town in which his mother apparently lives. There’s (a) nuance there...

So JP saw Jayme get ON a school bus one morning and decided that was the girl. So he just goes back to that driveway ( I assume ) that she was boarding the bus from, murders her Mom and Dad and takes her. To me, there is just so much more that I think he is not telling LE or LE is not making public.

LE (DA at post-hearing press conference) has said there is more information they haven’t released yet.

I have several friends who live in Minnesota and they have clunkers which they use for winter driving. I have been told this is pretty common practice in that area.

I'd like to know who paid for the insurance on the Taurus and if PF was listed as a driver. Somebody was paying PF's daily/monthly expenses.

JMO

The car(s) used by JP may not even have been insured. Don’t forget there were numerous ‘clunkers’ on the property.

Don’t ask me how I know ( ;) ) but drawing on personal experience, I’m not at all surprised that stolen plates, a plate belonging to a vehicle registered in another name, no obvious source of income/means to pay bills, etc etc “feature” in this case.

And I always wondered where the Sheriff's faith that JC was alive the whole time came from. IMO

I've wondered this too. I speculate that they had an FBI profile that they did not make public, and that the profiler suggested that this was a kidnapping in which the victim would be hidden alive someplace. Just speculation, of course, but we do know that they did ask for assistance from the FBI.

Totally see your logic here. It's the best clue they had, why not ask the public for help?

However I also see the logic of the other side. The side that says don't release that info.

For starters, I don't think they had a good image of it. The purpose of a dash cam is more for taping officers interactions with citizens, not for identifying vehicles. It won't capture a good image of a darker vehicle on the side of the road at night as an officer passed going 60+ mph. I think all they had was: reddish, might be a Taurus, probably 10-20 years old. Not much.

The obvious follow-up: Why release info on other cars, but not the Taurus? Only FBI/DCI/Fitzgerald know the answer. Can think of two reasons: 1) those cars weren't related and they were just doing it to keep interest on the case, or 2) those cars were on video in the area and LE was looking for them to see if they could get a better description of the Taurus and/or its occupants.

I also believe one could argue that since the Taurus is the only thing they really had, releasing it means they are basically showing all their cards. If the perp knows LE is looking for a Taurus the first thing he would do is get rid of it. So by releasing that info, they are giving the perp an opportunity to remove his connection to the only thing they have.

Also, withholding it would give them something to weed out potential suspects. Call about a suspicious person comes in to the tip line. "Does he own or have access to a red Taurus? He does? Let's check this one out with a fine-toothed comb."

And finally, as I've seen mentioned before, knowing that LE is looking for a Taurus could make the perp panic. Which wouldn't be good for Jayme.

I'd be curious to know if LE was considering releasing the description of the Taurus at the news conference they scheduled right before she was found.

Again, I see plenty of reasons both ways.
The thing that gets to me the most is that it is just odd. They had no idea in the beginning that this was going to be a media blitz so what cards are they holding by not at least putting an apb out for the homicide that they drove up on. Just weird. I wonder if they even seen it at all or if it is just put in there, collaborating with the criminal report.

This is a good point, but I would think LE did as a matter of SP canvass and review any all potential security footage of the neighbors and businesses, etc.

So I’m assuming they still didn’t see it?

I was going to go look and see what the view is from a dashcam camera - if he pulled to the side of the road would they even see it? I know my cameras have different angles - perhaps it just had lights? it was after midnight and very likely dark on that road IMO

Hmm so I wonder if their was a computer or if he even had any online presence at all? or a friend that did, perhaps?
None at all. Don't know if it's the way he grew up or if his parents noticed something off about him and decided to take steps to prevent him from going online and wreaking havoc. I imagine most kids want to be online nowadays, especially if they're gamers (who game with others online).

I thought that as well... Not to mention that Patterson said, DC was so scared she couldn't put the tape on Jayme. So perhaps their would have been quite a bit of tape residue on her hands from that angle too.. I do agree, she could have purposely done so.

(I agree.)

ETA: In many cases we see a lack of acknowledgement. I personally see this as responsible and empathetic.

(I’m still behind, haven’t read the contents of the letter if it is given.)

It might have been hard since most of the homes in that area seem set back and behind thickets of trees from the road. I think ricky mentioned that given the route, he must have had to pass by downtown area businesses, I'm wondering why they didn't check cams from like the McD's or other businesses from that time? Or maybe those cams aren't pointing toward the road?
