Found Deceased Channel Islands - Emiliano Sala 28, pilot David Ibbotson, 60, missing plane, Alderney, 21 Jan 2019

I’m thinking mid-air breakup or random stall for whatever reason. I’m an aviation geek but by no means an expert. I see a lot of talk about icing. Could it be that the icing caused the same “unreliable airspeed” type issue (think AF447) thus leading to a stall of some type and crash into the water? Overspeed? Breakup in mid-air? Of course I know the Piper and the jet involved in AF447 are completely different in a multitude of ways, but I’m just trying to connect some dots. MOO IMO

Strange that there was no MayDay call to ATC which makes me believe whatever happened, happened very quickly and was catastrophic. I’m leaning not towards engine failure but definitely still a possibility. IMO MOO

I hope they find him soon its tragic

7.30am update

Harbour Master Captain David Barker says:

We have resumed searching. Two planes are taking off and will search a targeted area we believe has the highest likelihood of finding anything, based on review of the tides and weather since it went missing. Coastal areas around Alderney and off-lying rocks and islands will also be searched from the air.

Updates will be provided once information is available

Missing plane: Police prioritise theory Emiliano Sala used life raft

[...]

Guernsey Police said it was looking at four possibilities for the fate of the plane including that it landed on water, with Sala and the pilot making it onto a life raft that was known to be on board.

The other options the force is considering are:

:: The plane landed elsewhere but has not made contact
:: The plane landed on water and Sala and the pilot have been picked up by a passing ship
:: The plane broke up on contact with the water, leaving them in the sea

"Our search area is prioritised on the life raft option," a police statement said.

Reports are that Dave Henderson is not the Pilot. Why is the pilot part and who he is or more information being said about him? There were several links about him but they were removed. It says his passport was checked with Sala but you cant find anything about him at all online. There was one fb ppst where he supposedely said he was not the pilot and is alive but fb removed it.
Why?

Different pilot named now! David Ibbotson, 60, according to Daily Mail.

Emiliano Sala's ex calls for the 'soccer mafia to be investigated' | Daily Mail Online

Emiliano Sala's heartbroken underwear model ex-girlfriend today blamed the 'football mafia' after his plane vanished over the Channel and said: 'I can't believe this is an accident'.

Victoria's Secret star Berenice Schkair, 27, made the extraordinary claim on social media after the new Cardiff City star's plane went missing over the English Channel after taking off in Nantes, France.

Sala and his pilot last made contact from their Piper FA-46 Malibu at 8.30pm on Monday and the pair are missing presumed dead after wreckage was spotted in the sea.

On Twitter last night Berenice tweeted: 'Investigate the football mafia because I don't believe this was an accident' before deleting it.

Lifeboats, helicopters and even locals in fishing boats have been scouring the sea for him - but have had to stop between dusk and dawn.

Posting photographs of them together, she wrote on Instagram: 'Emi, my heart is broken. I still cannot understand it. I'm destroyed, I feel pain, fear and anger for not being able to do anything. I know you're strong. We are waiting for you.

'I want to wake up and all of this to be a lie. Please investigate because I cannot believe this is an accident. Don't suspend the search for bad weather when you only just found objects floating.

Emiliano Sala's ex calls for the 'soccer mafia to be investigated' | Daily Mail Online
Missing soccer star Emiliano Sala booked his own 'risky' private flight across the English Channel after turning down a commercial flight from Cardiff City, it was revealed today.

The £15million player was offered a flight from bosses at new club Cardiff City but wanted to make his own travel arrangements from his former club in Nantes.
It came as aviation experts claimed that the Piper Malibu plane that Sala was travelling in had a 'questionable' safety record with 55 fatal crashes including 24 since 2000.

Former pilot Alastair Rosenschein said the plane may have become iced-up in the Arctic blast currently sweeping across northern Europe including the UK and France.

He said: 'It's already a fairly risky crossing to do in a single engine aircraft, especially in winter and definitely at night. There are icing problems too. It's a strange thing to do though to go and fly over water with one engine at night in winter because if your engine goes you're going in the water'.
French media had reported pilot David Henderson, 60, was flying the missing Piper Malibu PA-46, which disappeared near the Channel Islands on Monday night.

Mr Henderson later took to Facebook to confirm he was alive and well and it is unknown who was flying the missing PA-46.
Speaking to the BBC in 2015, Mr Henderson described the potential problems with the plane.

'One of the problems we can encounter is that ice can build up on the surfaces of the aircraft,' Mr Henderson explains.

'On the propeller and the wings and if it gets too great the aeroplane would ultimately stop flying.

'And the only way in most of the aeroplanes we fly to get rid of ice is to descend into warmer air and the ice will dissipate'.

Emilano Sala: Is missing Cardiff City footballer on a life raft? | Daily Mail Online

The pilot missing with footballer Emiliano Sala has today been named as a British father-of-three and gas engineer from Scunthorpe.

David Ibbotson, 60, was reportedly at the controls of the privately-owned Piper Malibu aircraft believed to have crashed into the sea near Alderney on Monday night.

The pilot, whose nickname is 'Dibbo', is married with three children and lives with his wife Nora near Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, and according to his Facebook account he checked into a hotel next to Nantes Airport on Saturday night.

He is an experienced pilot specialising in private flights and parachute expeditions - but also is a qualified gas engineer running his own boiler repair company in North Lincolnshire.

There were severe weather reports about snow and ice in the area at the time the plane went missing. A light single-engine aircraft, even if certified to fly in "known icing" is not equipped for that kind of weather. I've had flights in the corporate jet I used to fly where I told the boss "no, we're not departing" due to icing. The first time I did he threatened to fire me and I said: "I'd rather be unemployed than dead". I ended up being his pilot til he got a very expensive divorce and sold his company. Missing EPL striker Emiliano Sala sent fearful messages ahead of plane crash

2/2 A decision about whether to recommence will be taken early tomorrow morning. There will be no further updates tonight

This MSM report said the plane departed after FOUR attempts to take off. As a long time pilot, I'm guessing either a system malfunction that the pilot could clear before trying again or really gusty winds (possible given the forecast). The pilot left some comments on his FB that are troubling as well. I wonder if he was licensed to fly commercially and current on instruments? Prem ace's plane 'took FOUR attempts to take off' before it vanished off radar

And why wouldn’t he have gone on a commercial flight?

Yes especially since he had reportedly been in that same plane and said it was a bumpy ride. I do not have that link to where I read it. I think one small plane ride that was bumpy would concern me enough to not want to repeat it. But maybe it can also be seemingly less hectic and no crowds or people to fly privately - so so so so sad and tragic - wish he had been in a 2 engine jet.

I want to know what could of possibly happened that there was not any ability to make a May Day call or distress call??? The pilot had requested to land but I never saw where he was granted permission ... But if he was granted permission to land ... What was going on and did the pilot not say why he needed to land ? What would of prevented him from being able to continue to communicate? It seems if the plane broke up in the air they would of found pieces of it ... Did it possibly just suddenly fall from the sky and does that mean you also lose all comminication ability? If a plane hits the sea is it possible it hits and stays together and sinks as one unit without breaking up? Is it possible it will start to surface ? If it hit and went under and if they were conscious could they still get out with a life raft ? Is it possible they were able to glide much further out and rescuers just arent searching the right place????

I can answer a couple of those questions.

I was a flight instructor for years, even in a simulated emergency some people just freeze up and go mute. They are SO focused on the emergency they forget other items.

If they glided much further out the radar return would not have just vanished, and ditching at night is unbelievably hard to do as you can't see the water well enough, even with the landing light on, to plan your flare. I believe they just lost control and hit the water. I don't know if they did have a life raft or not. Rafts are expensive and bulky and some pilots flying over the water do not carry one (or rent one).

Planes are built to be as lightweight as possible for better performance - hitting the water after a loss of control at anywhere from 70 (stall speed roughly of this plane) to 200+ mph, what's left is pretty mangled. Usually, pieces don't show up, but commonly you will see an oil slick in the water if seas aren't too rough.

Thank you for your reply- if the pilot froze up and was concentrating - woulf Emiliano of been able to have wifi or a way to atleast whatsapp? Perhaps he was so scared he didnt even want to text?
I kept reading that the plane had a life raft but maybe its just something they are saying ... You keep seeing them on a life raft as possible scenarios so I was assuming for sure it had one.
How come if a plane breaks up all mangled that those pieces wont show up?
Can a plane hit the sea - a small one and just go under water and sink with nothing showing ? If there wasnt an oil slick what do you think happened or was there not an oil slick because the sea was rough? I am just having so much trouble with them not finding a trace - I know the Maylasia plane was gone without a trace for years but this one seems more like they have the area pretty much nailed down - with the Maylasia flight they really had no clue how far off it flew - this plane couldnt of gone far so why why why cant they find it ?????
Im sure my ignorance of aviation knowledge is showing :) Im not a huge soccer fan and I never heard of Emiliano before but this is just so tragic and disturbing!
