Found Deceased WA - Jacob Hilkin, 24, Tulalip, 23 Jan 2018

Jacob's mother was recently featured in a Podcast called The Vanished (The Vanished Podcast) in which she shared some updates on his case.

One major update is that they did a search for him in a wooded area near where he went missing. While they didn't find Jacob, they did find another missing young man named Shawn Bond (Remains found on Tulalip Reservation were those of man missing since 2015). This was the second biggest search performed in Washington history.

Second, the mother said that she was notified after the search that someone had tried to take all the money from her bank account, and had her name, social security number, pass codes etc. When she spoke to the bank, they told her that this man tried to authorize a transfer in the name of Jacob Hilkin. She believes, as I took it, that he was the victim of identity theft, and that someone may have robbed him and stolen his identity. This was reported to the police, but she was told that they likely wouldn't subpoena the phone call, and that the information likely wouldn't be turned over to the homicide detectives currently on the case.

Jacob had been with friends at a casino the night before, and told them he was going to catch a bus to get to his mother’s house, where he was living. He never made it home and has not been seen since. Tulalip police spoke with him that morning behind the Quil Ceda Village, an area frequented by the homeless. Snohomish County Sheriff’s officers told Dateline that the Tulalip officers did not think Jacob was in any kind of danger when they saw him. Detectives have pulled surveillance videos from multiple nearby transit centers but have not been able to find any footage of Jacob.

If he was the victim of identity theft, why would someone have all HER bank information. At that age, I didn't have a clue what my parent's social security numbers were or their passcodes.

Oh I would agree that she was the victim of identity theft, and I don't think that she was arguing that point either. It's been a while since I listened to the episode, but I believe the suspicious part was that the person knew that she was the mother of Jacob Hilkin. If I remember correctly, there was some kind of link between her account and her son's bank account (at least at the time that he went missing), which is why the mother thinks that the person may have gotten her information from (stealing?) Jacob's identity.

In any case, I think it's pretty weird that if they had all that information that they tried to authorize it in the name of Jacob. Why not just have a woman call in and say that they were her? That would probably raise less red flags. That and how did this person connect her to her son Jacob? That's the weirder part. I wouldn't think that someone who just wanted the money from her account and already had all of her information would be Googling her that extensively.
 
I read that the account that was setup for Jacob's mom raised just under the goal to hire a PI ... great idea. I wasn't able to determine if one was hired, and if so are any leads are panning out from the multiple sightings of him?

Mom sounds realistic. Addiction comes with struggles, whether someone is using or not. Sad!

Per link, Mom says: "... that Hilkin became addicted to heroin in his 20s. A year before he went missing, he went through rehab. He then moved to a house with friends and found a job. After a while, he started showing up late to work. A week before he went missing, he was fired. When his mother cleaned out his room, she saw signs of a relapse. She doesn’t think he was using again for long, she said."

The county medical examiner says the found remains have been tentatively identified and the family was notified.
