That tent is not usually sold along the AT but the manufacturer revealed one was apparently sold in Georgia at the Top of Georgia Hiking Center and Hostel. They spoke to the owner who sold him the tent. The hostel owner was surprised he bought such a large tent toward the end of his hike on the AT. It's technically a two person tent and they had trouble selling it. It's a $300 tent and he purchased it in cash.

I am so glad that they followed up on the Brooks Mountaineering Tent. That is not a common brand on the east coast and I thought about reaching out to the manufacturer directly. LE really seems to be on top of this. Wish we knew more about if he was actually living and working in NY and if so, was it in NYC or a suburb? It seems very likely that he was employed at some point and that might be the best way to ID him.
 
I called Collier County. I seriously felt like I was chasing my tail in circles! Unfortunately the woman I was speaking to had no idea wth I was talking about. She just kept interrupting me and asking if I had a name, is he black, white, Hispanic. Finally I said “ wait, we are obviously having a problem communicating” lol
She finally stopped talking long enough for me to explain. Then I had to explain twice that Collier County had posts about the hiker on their own fb page. Sigh, she put me on hold, then came back and told me to call their public communications office tomorrow.
I don’t think she understood anything I was telling her.
Maybe I’ll just send a fb message. Lol

My SO is in IT. He doesn't write code but he has been a computer programmer. When the economy was bad around 2008 and tech jobs were low in our area he worked for one of those companies that has the electronic poker games. There were these little stores in strip malls that had a cashier and just electronic poker games, nothing else. They are outlawed so we only have poker gaming on Indian Reservations now. Programming for electronic games like this has crossed my mind. But I don't even know if such places exist in New York.

You could also try emailing the homicide detectives listed above. Also might help if you reference the case number they give.

Just trying out this man who went missing from Brooklyn/NY in 2015, cannot find an update as to whether or not he has since been located, fwiw..

Brogan was last seen in front of 424 West 34th Street, Manhattan.

He is described as 5’9″ tall, 180 pounds, with a medium build, light complexion and brown hair. He was last seen wearing a green sweater, blue pants and black sneakers."

His front teeth seem to be crooked and overlap each other. Our hiker had perfect straight teeth. I also don't think the noses match. Thanks for looking though!

I live in Manhattan and I'm trying to think of an efficient and productive way to get his picture out around here. With spring coming I can post missing posters on poles and try to get a hit. If anyone has any other ideas let me know - unfortunately I don't know anyone in business/coding/IT circles that I can pass his photo around to.

And I just remembered I once read that a local bondsman found someone by contacting corporate offices for major storage facilities... I wonder if they (corporate offices for storage businesses) could send out his picture to their storefronts in New York. If MH had a storage locker, he may have been memorable. He could have even prepaid in cash and then abandoned a locker.

I'll check this out and see which ones I can find in the area.

I wouldn't want to write him off on just that. There's a lot that appears to match (like the pattern of gray in his beard) --at least enough to justify further investigation. The nose does seem to be wrong but with the different angle it's hard to say.
 
Any thoughts on why NamUs has not updated his picture from the artist sketch to an actual picture of him? Perhaps LE is not 100% confident that it's him? Not sure how that works but an actual picture in place of the sketch might be very helpful to those scanning the site for a missing loved one.
 
Just got off the phone with Detective Kim Cherney. Very nice person. She is going to check with the other detectives and see if Unionville was ever thoroughly checked out. She does remember calling one small NY town and not getting a call back. She is also going to check with Bear Mtn park and see if they asked a camper to leave in April or May. They are getting help from NYS police on this end so she will get with them on those things.
Detective Cherney also confirmed a few things for me.
His backpack WAS found inside his tent.
He has perfect teeth with no dental work.
According to the information they have he has not had any surgery. No tattoos, no dental work, no scars other than the very small one. ( sounds like the small scar was something superficial)
Detective Cherney also said she will ask the lead detective if I can be updated on the outcome so I can post it here.

First time posting. Everyone says this guy is so familiar. WHen I saw the pics of him with less beard I thought he looked a lot like "MySpace Tom" after further though though, I think he looks EXACTLY like Paul Thomas Anderson. That overlay you did was amazing. That is why i am responding to this post specifically. I tried to include link to an image of who I am talking about. Just a thought on why everyone thinks he is so familiar...
