A second person has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the stabbing of a 17-year-old girl in an east London park.

Jodie Chesney was attacked while playing music with friends in Harold Hill, Romford, on 1 March. Jodie was with five other teenagers near a children's playground in Harold Hill at about 21:00 GMT when they became aware of two males who they did not speak to. The pair then left but about 30 minutes later they returned and walked straight towards the group where one of them stabbed the victim in the back.

The male suspect was being held in custody in London. A 20-year-old man who was arrested in Leicester on 5 March on suspicion of murder also remains in custody.

Jodie was the fifth teenager to be stabbed to death in London this year.

Manuel Petrovic, of Romford, and a 16-year-old boy are accused over the death of 17-year-old Jodie on 1 March.

Judge Nicholas Hilliard QC set a three-week trial for 2 September and a plea hearing on 28 May. At the end of the brief hearing, the judge remanded the defendant into custody.

The 16-year-old defendant will appear at Barkingside magistrates court on Monday. The 18-year-old man from Romford is being held in police custody on suspicion of murder.

A 50-year-old man and 38-year-old woman, both from Dagenham, east London, and a 17-year-old boy were being held on suspicion of assisting an offender.

This is a bit confusing: a 20 year old man, a 18 year old man, a 16 year old boy for murder along with the 50 year old man, 38 year old woman and 17 year old boy assisting are mentioned in the above posts: could someone clarify?

Yes, all six have been arrested - three for murder, three for assisting an offender. All still in custody as far as I know.

I presume, but don't know that the 50 year old man and 38 year old woman are who he lives with and the 17 year old is a friend or a sibling - all lied about his whereabouts perhaps? JMO. Poor Jodie

Jodie Chesney: 17-year-old boy charged with girl's murder

Jodie Chesney was stabbed in the back while playing music and smoking cannabis with friends in a park in Harold Hill, east London, on 1 March.

She may not have been the intended target of the attack, the prosecution told the Old Bailey jury.

Manuel Petrovic, 20, Svenson Ong-a-kwie, 19, both from Romford, and two boys, aged 16 and 17, deny murder.

The jury was told two people came out of the dark in the park and the taller of them swung his right arm at Jodie's back.

She suffered a deep wound to her back and was left bleeding heavily as her attackers disappeared seconds later.
Girl, 17, 'murdered in drug turf war'

"It is not entirely clear what happened, but it looks as though Manuel Petrovic and the 16-year-old had gone to Gidea Park in order to sell drugs.

"It may be that they were ambushed by their 'customers' - who then stole their drugs.

"This is two hours after the murder of Jodie and, in any event, what is clear is that their mobile telephones were stolen and the key to the Vauxhall Corsa was taken."

There is, however, nothing to suggest that Jodie was involved in the supply of drugs or that she upset anyone, Mr Aylett said.

Mr Aylett continued: "The car was stuck in the middle of the road and local residents had to call the police."

He added that a witness, Kay Connelly, spotted the Vauxhall Corsa parked near her home in Gidea Park at 11.10pm.

He said: "Ms Connelly says that the headlights of the car were on and there were about four males standing by the driver's side of the car.

"Ms Connelly says that the males seemed to know each other and there was nothing to suggest that there was any tension between them.

"Indeed, Ms Connelly saw them fist-bumping one another.”
