What we know so far

• At 1:40pm a gunman entered the Masjid Al Noor Mosque in central Christchurch and opened fire
• There are reports of casualties with local media are reporting some people have died, with witnesses saying they saw “lots of bodies” on the ground, though police have not confirmed the number of those injured or dead.
• This is an active shooter situation, with police responding to more gunshots fired at other locations across the city.
• The city remains under lockdown, with central Christchurch evacuated, children who were participating in the climate strikes were evacuated, schools are under lockdown.
• Police have confirmed to the Guardian that there is a bomb in a car that has crashed on Strickland Street in the city. People are being evacuated from the area.
• Police are entering properties in Deyell Crescent, they are telling evacuees “you don’t want to know what is happening”.
• Prime minister Jacinda Ardern cancelled all her afternoon activities and is set to address media at 4pm local time (in about half an hour).

Sources have told our reporter on the ground, Eleanor Ainge Roy, that police are searching for three people inside the area that has been cordoned off, as well as a white van.

There are reports that someone who could be the shooter has released a manifesto online, and a very disturbing video showing the attack.

These are unconfirmed at this stage and we are choosing not to publish more about them until we have been able to verify them. We will bring you more information about this when we have it.

‘I saw people drop dead’ - witness’s horrific account of shooting
A man who was at the mosque during the incident is telling TVNZ he hasn’t seen his wife, who was also in the mosque this morning, since the shooting.

The man, who is a wheelchair and pushed himself out to the carpark, has a chilling account of the event.

He said he was in the side room and the imam had just started his sermon when the shooting started.

It was very peaceful, calm and quiet, as it is when the sermon starts, you could hear a pin drop.

Then suddenly the shooting started. It started in the main room... I was in the side room, so I didn’t see who was shooting but I saw that some people were running out to my room where I was in, I saw some people had blood on their body and some people were limping. It was at the moment I realised things were really serious.

The police say one suspect is in custody, but that the situation is still ongoing and it is an active shooter situation.

Commissioner Mike Bush said it was a “very serious and grave situation” and warned people not to leave their homes.

“Close your doors until you hear from us again,” said Bush.

reply to above post - his manifesto was on twitter, it was pulled but im sure people copied it first.

his prior warnings were posted to the cesspool 8chan, im not sure if they are still up since i will not visit that site.

this guy calmly walked into a mosque and executed 40+ people (my guess) he then went outside looking for more victims, he then returned to his car to reload and went back in to make sure everyone was dead, including head shots for just about every victim whether they were moving or not, then he drove off shooting out of his car at more people and joking about how easy it was.

his motive is very clear but i wont get into it. hopefully this guy is the guy in custody, while obviously anyone involved is dangerous - i cant imagine anyone "more" dangerous than this man.

4:00pm: Latest update from police: There have been multiple fatalities, there is still an active shooter scenario playing out.

One person is in custody and there have been people killed in two mosques, one on Deans Ave and one in Linwood.

3:53pm: Security Analyst Paul Buchanan says he has seen the gunman's manifesto and the shooting is "clearly a case of a white supremacist".

He says the shooter would likely have had support in carrying out the attack.

3:49pm: There are unconfirmed reports at least nine people have been killed in the attack.

The gunman behind one of the two horrific mass shootings at a Christchurch mosque today, livestreamed the moment he mowed down dozens.

There are reports of multiple dead and at least 50 casualties with emergency service vehicles still at Al Noor Mosque in central Christchurch and Linwood Masjid mosque. There is also a heavy police presence at Christchurch Hospital.

At least one of the gunman livestreamed the shooting to social media, sharing the horrifying video to Facebook.

The chilling POV video, viewed by news.com.au and verified by Storyful, begins with a man in brown fingerless gloves driving through the streets of Christchurch towards the mosque.

The camera appears to be attached to his head.

This is just awful. Simply tragic and frightening. I am following the news via my radio app on my phone and it's still very much a developing situation. The news just gets worse by the moment. The NZ PM just spoke, and expressed the horror we are all feeling.

And another bad bit just coming in: someone trying to take credit (whether legitimate or nut) is a guy born here in Oz. He's allegedly posted a manifesto filled with hate on 8chan or somewhere. How shameful. How embarrassing for us.

I would say that the shooter is just like Brevik, following in his footsteps. There seems to be a manifesto somewhere on the web (according to members on a Swedish site similar to Reddit), where he claims that one of the reasons for this is to take revenge on the terrorist attack in Stockholm in April 2017 where among others a 11-year-old girl named Ebba died. I haven't looked up the manifesto, have no interest to see it, but her name is mentioned in it. What a "counter-terrorism" attack in New Zealand have something to do with what happened in Stockholm is just something that exsist in a mad-man's head, in my opinion.

Brenton Tarrant is the name used by the man shown in a graphic and extremely disturbing Facebook live video who appears to be fatally shooting multiple people at a New Zealand mosque in Christchurch with a rifle scrawled with the names of other mass shooters.

Although it’s not yet clear whether that’s his real name or not, and authorities have not confirmed the identity of the active shooter or the authenticity of the video (police told CNN they were “aware” of it), the Facebook page in the name Brenton Tarrant appears to have streamed the mosque mass shooting on Facebook Live. In the longer version of the video, you see him in his car with multiple rifles at his side. He appears to be wearing military gear. You can hear the GPS giving him directions to the mosque in the chilling video. He is wearing gloves with the fingers cut out and plays music – a song called “Remove Kebab” about ethnic cleansing -during the ride. He then walks into the mosque and coldly and randomly begins to gun people down.

The man who claimed responsibility for the shooting said he was 28-year-old white Australian who came to New Zealand only to plan and train for the attack. He said he was not a member of any organization, but had donated to and interacted with many nationalist groups, though he acted alone and no group ordered the attack.

He said the mosques in Christchurch and Linwood would be the targets, as would a third mosque in the town of Ashburton if he could make it there.

He said he chose New Zealand because of its location, to show that even the most remote parts of the world were not free of "mass immigration."

Very shocking and horrible. Much sympathy to the victims, families and everyone in Christchurch and all of NZ.

Update: Just saw a crawler at the link above saying the killers captured so far are 3 men and 1 woman.

The messages left indicate they are white supremacists.

Daily Mail says one is a 28 yo man from Australia.
